Ethiopian Christian art at St George Gallery
The Beautiful Churches of Addis Abeba – Entoto St. Mary / እንጦጦ ማርያም 2/3 HD
One of my most pleasant walks to the Entoto Mariam (St. Mary) church, climbing for an hour the clear-aired 3500 meter above sea level Entoto Mountains through magnificent forests of Eucalyptus, and living The Spirit of a pure Christianity. Entoto Mariam. Entoto Mariam which was first built in the 14th century by King Dawit is located at the top of the hill with great view of Addis. The enthusiasm and positive energy of the faithful during monthly observance of Saint Mary's Day is overwhelmingly astonishing. What a beautiful spiritual experience!

Professor Nebiyou Baye's speech at St. George Golla art gallery opening
Ethiopian Federal Housing Corporation demolished a house on March 28, 2019, which sparked an outrage in the community. The house, previously owned by Dejazmach Amde Abera Kassa, was built in the 1920s and was known to be a house recorded as a heritage by Addis Ababa City Culture and Tourism Office. Following the demolition disregarding the historical value, Assistant Professor Nebiyou Baye, Addis Ababa City Culture and Tourism Office Head, threatened to sue the corporation for negligence.
Assistant Professor Nebiyou attended the opening ceremony of St. George Golla Arts Gallery on April 12, 2019. The gallery, originally a historical house marked for demolition, was reconstructed without altering the original attributes by artist and architect Selamawit Alene. She invested time and money to rebuild the entire place and had to battle ownership claim for the house turned gallery. During the opening ceremony, Assistant Professor Nebiyou gave Selamawit the highest praise for her act to restore and protect history.

Elias Sime: Tightrope
Elias Sime: Tightrope
September 7 - December 8, 2019
Curated by Tracy L. Adler, Johnson-Pote Director, Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College
Video by Brett Novak
Featuring more than twenty-five works of art of varying scales, including new work created by the artist to debut in this exhibition, Elias Sime: Tightrope explores the full breadth of Sime’s practice. A selection of early, stitched canvases incorporating bottle caps, buttons, and other found objects, critical to the artist’s development, will be presented alongside the “Tightrope” series. Sime’s visual references and influences are wide-ranging. From the brushwork of the Impressionist painters to the Twitter logo, from socialist realism to topographic photography, from linguistics to botany, all sources are fair game and ripe for interpretation. These divergent themes, which find harmonious confluence in his work, access the rich vocabulary and history of both natural and created forms. As an extension of his artistic practice and a thread throughout his work, Sime, with the anthropologist and curator Meskerem Assegued, founded the Zoma Museum, which opened in Addis Ababa in 2019. Comprising a school, farm, garden, library, and exhibition and project space, Zoma offers a holistic conception of how community, sustainability, and art can be merged into a unified vision—one that posits a way forward toward a future in which nature, society, and creativity thrive together.
