Biserica greacă Sfântul Nicolae din SULINA - St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (Romania)
Enable English subtitle !
The Greek Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1867 in the central area of the port city of Sulina (at the mouth of Danube in the Black Sea, on Sulina arm) and was sanctified in 1869. This beautiful church, a historical monument, is the witness of a missing world today, being about the Greek community, the largest and most important ethnic group in Sulina from the mid-nineteenth century until the First World War. The arrival of the Greeks in Sulina and its transformation from a simple fishing village to a cosmopolitan, flourishing city of international importance with the status of a free port (Porto Franco) was occasioned by the installation here of the European Danube Commission (C.E.D.) with the role of ensuring free navigation on the Lower Danube. With the abolition of C.E.D. in 1939 and the coming of the Communist regime to power in Romania, the Greeks began to leave so that the church was given to the Romanian Orthodox cult in 1974. Although in Sulina there are four churches dedicated to St. Nicholas, the spiritual protector of seamen, travelers on water and the fishermen, this are distinguished by the feast of St. Nicholas of the Summer celebrated on 9 May, honoring the moving of the relics of St. Nicholas from Mira Lichia (Turkey) in Bari (Italy) in the 11th century, passing through Heptanez, a group of seven islands in the west and south of Greece, where many of the Greek emigrants came from. The stone from which the church is made, the furniture, the old icons and even the magnificent iconostasis of olive trees were brought from Greece. There are seven (!) miraculous icons in the church, of which the most important is the Mother of God Myrtidiotissa (from the myrtle tree), whose legend starts from the island of Kythira, the 14th century and who is one of the most important miracle-working icons of the Greek Orthodoxy. The series of wonders was completed a few years ago when the eyes of St. John the Evangelist painted on the pillar arcade droped myrrh tears. Our guide was Father Parish Vasile Olaru, who strives to bring this church back to the brilliance of the past.

Tomb of Saint Nicholas Jerpoint Park, Kilkenny, Ireland by Ivision Ireland
or Ivision Ireland:- Anchor: Rajesh Unnithan & Chry_Martin (Martin Varghese - Ireland)
The supposed tomb of Saint Nicholas a fine slab effigy in low relief of an early 14th-century ecclesiastic popularly associated with Saint Nicholas of Myra in County Kilkenny, Ireland. While more probably a local priest from Jerpoint Abbey, it lies in the medieval lost town of Newtown Jerpoint, just west of the Cistercian Jerpoint Abbey.
It is located 2.0 miles (3.2 km) southwest of Thomastown, just off the N9 national primary road in the grounds of the privately owned Jerpoint Park. St. Nicholas's Church and graveyard are in the town, where the earthly remains of St. Nicholas of Myra are said to be buried. Belmore House stands at the top of the town.
The memorial has been moved since 1839, and it has sustained damage from the fall of a tree. A conservation plan was developed by the Heritage Council in 2007. In advance of conservation work in 2013, St Nicholas church and the tomb of St Nicholas were surveyed and modelled in 3D

Bari - Italy
Bari is the capital city of the province of Bari and of the Apulia (or, in Italian, Puglia) region, on the Adriatic Sea, in Italy. It is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy after Naples, and is well known as a port and university city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas. The city itself has a decreasing population of about 320,000, as of 2009, over 116 km², while the fast-growing urban area counts 653,028 inhabitants over 203 km². Another 500,000 people live in the metropolitan area.
Bari is made up of four different urban sections. To the north is the closely built old town on the peninsula between two modern harbours, with the splendid Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Cathedral of San Sabino (1035--1171) and the Swabian Castle built for Frederick II, which is now also a major nightlife district. To the south is the Murat quarter (erected by Joachim Murat), the modern heart of the city, which is laid out on a rectangular grid-plan with a promenade on the sea and the major shopping district (the via Sparano and via Argiro).
Modern residential zones surround the centre of Bari, the result of chaotic development during the 1960s and 1970s replacing the old suburbs that had developed along roads splaying outwards from gates in the city walls. In addition, the outer suburbs have developed rapidly during the 1990s. The city has a redeveloped airport named after Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyła Airport, with connections to several European cities. ( source Wikipedia )
Arrival into the Port of Bari, Italy onboard MSC Preziosa - 24 August 2014
Upon arrival into the port of Bari, when I looked out of my balcony I saw what appeared to be an extremely flat city and an industrial looking port. What I didn't know was that is that Bari is the second most important economic center of mainland Southern Italy after Naples and is well known as a port and university city. The following is from the daily program for MSC Yacht Club members about Bari:
The city is divided in two parts, a modern part, developed from the beginning of the 19th Century thanks to Gioacchino Murat, King of the two Sicillies, and the Old part that gathers the most important Medieval and Renaissance monuments. The Old City seems a labyrinth of narrow streets, closed courts and tower houses. It is known to be the city that carries the St. Nicholas (San Nicola). That privilege has made Bari and its Basilica one of the most important Orthodox centers established in Italy.

A Glimpse of Bari in Puglia
Puglia, positioned in the heel of Italy’s boot, is a lesser known region to tourists. Puglia or Apulia (the Latin name for the region), the southernmost peninsula, has remained almost untouched by visitors. Its beautiful coastlines, countryside and vast number of historical monuments from the ancient to the medieval period lay waiting for discerning visitors.
Bari, the capital of Puglia, had been a gateway into the heart of Europe for centuries. It is full of stories from the ancient Greek settlers to the Romans, Arabs, Normans, Turks and Spanish who had left their mark in a land that amalgamates eastern and western culture. The old fortified walls protecting the city still stand and are surrounded by narrow cobbled streets.
PopImpressKA Journal: Travel and History - PART 1 / DEMRE / Turkey / St. Nicholas of Myra and More
There are so many wonderful places to visit out there. One of the most memorable is Demre means Peace, and is one of Turkey's most visited cities. This is one of the centers of the spread of Christianity, the place where he lived and preached Nicholas of Patras, known in the Orthodox tradition as Nicholas or Nikolai Ugodnik. sailor son (hence its sailors patron status), he was trained in Xanthus and became Bishop of Myra, where he preached from about 310 AD. e. until his death in 343, immediately after the death of St. Nicholas church was built; here he was buried in a marble sarcophagus. Originally, the church was destroyed by an earthquake, and in its place was built a basilica, destroyed in the 7th century. Arabs. Modern building (cruciform basilica) was built around the 8th century. The sarcophagus, which originally were the relics of St. Nicholas is located in the south aisle of the church, which is located between the two columns behind the ruined marble walls. It is believed to have been buried, and Nicholas's relics were fist there and later on were stolen by an Italian Pirates who then brought ST. Nicholas relics to Bari, Italy. In this story we also included a video of this trip however we did not record the trip and somehow it appeared on a camera, so we kept it as is. Enjoy!
Ruins of ancient Myra are located 2 km north of the center of Demre and are one of the most easily accessible archaeological sites in Turkey. From the city, the ruins of the magnificent Greco-Roman theater and carved in the rock tombs. The uniqueness and originality of Lycian tombs can be explained by the fact that the peoples of Lycia was the custom to bury the dead in the high places, because it was assumed that it will help them get to heaven.

Places to see in ( Trani - Italy ) Cattedrale di Trani
Places to see in ( Trani - Italy ) Cattedrale di Trani
Trani Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim in Trani, Apulia, Italy. Formerly the seat of the archbishop of Trani, it is now that of the archbishop of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie. It is a great example of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Construction began in 1099, over the earlier church of Santa Maria della Scala, going back to the 4th century. The relics of Saint Leucius were kept here until the 8th century, when they were translated to Brindisi. The new church was intended to house the relics of Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim (who died in Trani in 1094).
The cathedral was dedicated as soon as they were installed, without waiting for the building to be completed. The decisive stage of construction probably took place between about 1159 and 1186 under the leadership of Bishop Bertrando II, and the building was complete by about 1200, except for the bell tower.
It was built using the local stone of Trani, a typical building stone of the region: a calcareous tuff, obtained from the caves of the city, characterised by its colour, an extremely light pink, almost white. The cathedral is distinguished by its showy transept and by its use of the high pointed arch in the passage beneath the bell tower, which is unusual in Romanesque architecture.
( Trani - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Trani . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Trani - Italy

Saint Theodora in Vasta
What Scientists Have Said About the Miraculous Chapel of St. Theodora in Vasta
What we know of the life of St. Theodora of Vasta comes entirely from local tradition, but her little chapel in southern Greece is known throughout the world and visited by thousands every year.
The Chapel of St. Theodora dates approximately to the 12th century and it is entirely made of stone. What is extraordinary about this church however is that there currently grow 17 enormous trees on the roof of this small structure. Most of them are over 30m high, and some of them are over 1m in diameter. Many of the trees weigh over 1 ton. Yet, even if the roof of the little church is thin and without any special support, it remains standing for centuries now as if by a miracle. Scientists have studied the case and they confess their inability to explain how the trees grow on such a thin roof, without destroying the church. The little church is under great pressure, and over time some minor restoration has been necessary, but that is mainly due to the curiosity of some inexperienced people who have tried to “understand the mystery”. Unprofessional interventions have affected the church’s architecture, though only to a small degree.
According to tradition, St. Theodora, prior to her martyrdom, prayed: “May my body become a church, my blood a river, and my hair trees.” Today this is exactly what one sees when visiting this holy shrine. On the spot where her martyred body is said to lay, locals built a church in her honor. A river also runs beneath this chapel and the trees have grown above it.
The little church is currently under the protection of the Metropolis of the region, as well as under that of the Minister of Culture as a Byzantine monument of national value.

Throughout the world, known as Father Christmas, St. Nicholas was born in Patara, an important Lycian city in Turkey's Mediterranean coast. St. Nicholas, known as Father Christmas all over the world, was born in Patara in Turkey's Mediterranean coast, an important Lycian city and lived in Myra and was buried. The story of Santa Claus is as follows: Around 300 AD, when Patara is in prosperity, the rich wheat merchant who lives in the city has a son and is called Nikolas. It was pointed out that when he was born, he was born a gift of the sky, a fruit of his parents' prayers and offerings, a savior of the poor.
It is believed that St. Nicholas, who was believed to be the protector of sailors and students, died on December 6, 343 at the age of 65. Myra people built a church in the name of him and leave him in his sarcophagus to sleep infinitely. The sarcophagus in the niches is considered to belong to Santa Claus of Roman Period sarcophagus decorated with acanthus leaves in the first niche. Even the fish scale pattern on the sarcophagus of Santa Claus is thought to be the saint of sailors. The St. Nicholas Memorial Museum welcomes many visitors from all over the world every year.

Burisma Puts Finishing Touches to the Church of Saint Nicholas of Myra over Easter Week
In the week leading up to Easter, the Church of Saint Nicholas of Myra has opened it doors to parishioners for the first time. For years now, one of Ukraine's leading gas producers, the International Energy Group Burisma owned by Nikolay Zlochevskyi has been a loyal benefactor to the church.
In 1998, near the village of Demydiv the local community put up a memorial cross and conducted a service on the spot, where Jesus Christ is believed to have appeared before two shepherd boys on July 30, 1926. And it was only in 2011 that the first stone of a holy church was laid. We couldn't have done it without the help of Nikolay Zlochevskyi, says the prior of the church, priest Oleh. In the future, we are planning to build facilities for monks and parishioners, along with a refectory, a prosthesis and a Sunday school.
Sacred sites have special spiritual significance to many people and constitute intangible cultural heritage. They should be maintained and bestowed to future generations, says the President at Burisma Group Nikolay Zlochevskyi.
This is not the first time that Burisma Group rises to the occasion to preserve Ukraine's spiritual heritage. For many years, the Group has been providing funds to restore the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. In particular, Burisma has contributed to the reconstruction of fortress walls and Lavra Hospital, where the Saint Agapetus of Pechersk temple is located. Agapetus of Pechersk was a famous monk and doctor in the times of Kievan Rus. In 2014, his holy relic was transferred from the Near Caves to the Refectory Church. In 1941, the Refectory Church was seriously damaged in the explosion of the Uspensky Cathedral. Burisma Group has been a large contributor to the restoration of both buildings.
Thanks to the generous support from Burisma, we have renovated the dome, roof, walls, windows, and most importantly, elaborate baroque frescoes of the church. The government used to help us in small ways, now, however, this help is practically noexistent. We are eternally grateful to Mr. Zlochevskyi for his ongoing support and involvement, says Metropolitan Pavlo, senior priest at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
According to him, amid political turmoil, many seem to have forgotten that the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is more than the city's most famous landmark. It is one of the very first monasteries of Kievan Rus and one of the most important Orthodox treasures listed among UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Exploring Very Old English Church & Graveyard Saint Nicholas Sulham
Got permission to explore and video this old church and graveyard.
A church dedicated to St Nicholas has stood on the ancient site for well over a thousand years.
Saint Nicholas is the patron saint both of Russia and of Bari in Southern Italy and was the Bishop
of Myra, Asia Minor, in the 4th century A.D. He is the protector of children, sailors and travellers
and in the guise of Santa Claus originated the custom of placing Christmas gifts in children's
stockings.
The original church at Sulham dated from the 13th century, but it was rebuilt in 1836-8 (with extensions of 1875) by Rev. John Wilder, Vice-Provost of Eton College, who lived in the adjoining Sulham House and fancied himself as a bit of an architect. He is said to have been inspired by his 'grand tour' of Italy undertaken in his younger days, although one can also identify influences from local churches, such as Tidmarsh and Theale. New Pevsner calls it, an almost completely unspoilt example of a pre-Camdenian village church in the Early English style. It originally had a tall spire, but this was removed in 1959. Inside, it retains a 1733 font and Tudor-Gothic pulpit from the previous building.
When built, the church consisted of a chancel with south vestry, a nave, a west tower surmounted
by a spire and a west doorway. In 1888, when the church was 50 years old, the chancel was
lengthened by the addition of a straight-sided apse. At about this time the organ was installed.
The organ was constructed by one of the greatest of the nineteenth century builders; William Hill
of London. No date of build is shown but its specification and the beauty of its voicing which gives
such richness in the blending of the stops would possibly date it between 1870-1880. Hill made it
to suit the size of the church, its acoustic properties and its liturgical requirements. Tonally it is
considered to be a gem.
The organ case is attractive and artistically pleasing and in the same way that the tone blends, it
blends with the architecture of the chancel. A unique feature is that the console is at right angles
to the organ which unfortunately precludes communication between the player and the service
taking place in the church. Had the console been sited where the organ case is, then there would
have been no lovely organ case to glorify the chancel.
