Tour of Steilneset Memorial, Vardø
Walk through of Steilneset Memorial in Vardø, the most north-easterly point of Norway. Designed by Peter Zumthor, with an installation by Louise Bourgeois, and words by Dr Liv Helene Willumsen, it is built on the spot where the burnings took place.
Steilneset Memorial was constructed in memory to the 91 victims of the 17th century witch trials that took place in Vardø, which forms the backdrop for my novel The Mercies, forthcoming from Picador in 2020.
I visited in July, the time of the midnight sun, and hope to return in winter.

This solemn work by Peter Zumthor and Louise Bourgeois (shown under construction in May, 2011) honors the victims of 17th-century witch trials in Vardø, above the Arctic Circle in Norway's northeastern reaches. The haunting site is illuminated by the midnight sun and narrated by the calls of seabirds.

The witch trials of Vardø were held in Vardø in Finnmark in Northern Norway in the winter of 1662–1663 and were one of the biggest in Scandinavia. This is really an important topic to me since I live in Norway and have been wanting to make a video like this in a very long time, I am happy I finally managed. Hope to have been able to pass through the horror and brutality of what has happened and this episode is entirely dedicated to all my brothers and sisters that lost their lives in these insane witch hunts.

I påsken måtte jeg besøke heksemonumentet og laget i den forbindelse en liten film i all hast.
Heksemonumentet i Vardø tar oss tilbake til en grufull periode i europeisk historie, og inn i menneskesinnets mørkeste avgrunn. Steilneset minnested handler om 91 ofre for hekseprosessene i Finnmark på 1600-tallet.

The Witch in Scandinavian Film: Cinema Scandinavia Video Essay
It was until recently that the image of the witch constituted the horror genre in the region. Roald Dahl said The Norwegians know all about witches [...] for Norway, with its black forests and icy mountains, is where the first witches came from. While Scandinavian horror cinema has never been placed within an artistic movement, such as German Expressionism, its filmmakers and artists have influenced all genres, for example Edvard Munch's paintings were a great influence to the Expressionists. Furthermore, Ingmar Bergman and Carl Theodore Dreyer are two of the biggest Scandinavian directors to make their presence internationally. The crucial light and shadow in their films and the piercing sense of guilt that tortures the souls of their characters clearly reveal such
tensions. Dilys Powell, when critiquing Bergman's Det Sjunde Inseglet (The Seventh Seal, 1957),said whenever Scandinavian cinema has five minutes to fill, it burns a witch. The only other film to depict witch burning is Dreyer's Vredens Dag (Day of Wrath, 1943), which makes the act of burning a witch a small yet powerful image in the cinema. The imagery of witchcraft presented in early Scandinavian horror helps further understand the distinctive and culturally influenced genre,as in the themes of religion and violence.

Norwegian Witches
The witch trials of Vardø were held in Vardø in Finnmark in Northern Norway in the winter of 1662–1663 and were one of the biggest in Scandinavia. Thirty women were put on trial, accused of sorcery and making pacts with the Devil. One was sentenced to a work house, two tortured to death, and eighteen were burned alive at the stake. It was the peak of the witch hunt which had intensified in Northern Norway since the first great Vardø witch trial in 1621. Vardø was the center of Norwegian Nordkalotten; many witch trials were held here during the 17th century, the biggest in 1621, in 1652–1653 and in 1662–1663..........
