Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge Corpus Christie Texas
Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge Corpus Christie Texas
We saw seagulls, pelicans, coots, ducks turtles, egrets etc
Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge, located on Ennis Joslin and Nile roads is easy to get to and full of birds, however, it is also prime territory for getting robbed and your vehicle busted into- broken glass an all.
On the positive- Birders from all over the world visit it every year- the signs say the area is under video surveillance, however, on July 22, 2012 I met a local at 10 am in the parking lot and there were two areas of broken window glass. He stated that he suffered the same fate a month ago- when he asked the police to check they video surveillance they laughed- hence the camera signs are a bluff in that area.
Pat Suter and her late husband, Hans, originally saved the land on which the park is situated, the Blind Oso, from being filled and turned into a commercial development and subdivision. Congrats to them- be careful when you visit and the time you choose.

(about the video)
SHOTGUNS inside a refuge and NATURE APPRECIATION don't mix.
Hunting brings revenue to Texas. President & members of Ducks Unlimited 'laid claim' to the park with an excess of 80 blasts and big bags of dead ducks. Investigation pending review of Texas Laws - Texas Parks Code ...Texas revenue is also well funded by large fines.

Sunset, Lake Corpus Christi
Texas State Parks are currently in very real danger of being closed down. I received an email newsletter a few days ago from Carter Smith, Executive Director of Texas Parks & Wildlife; here is what it said:
I am reaching out to you because you have been a supporter of Texas State Parks. As you may know, record drought and heat, devastating wildfires, and a drop in visitation have led to a critical situation for state parks.
As a result, we need $4.6 million to offset this shortfall and help keep these state parks open. Thankfully there are three simple ways to help:
First, make a tax-deductible donation online or by mail.
Second, write in a donation of $5 or more to state parks on your vehicle registration form when you register your motor vehicle by mail, at your local county tax office, or online in counties which offer online payment.
Third, and most importantly, visit a state park with your family or friends because visitor fees pay for about half of all state park operating costs.
Thank you for this opportunity to communicate with you. Please be assured that we will not abuse the privilege. I hope you will act now to help keep your state parks open for all Texans to enjoy. Because Texas State Parks won't be the same without you.
Sincerely,
Carter Smith
Executive Director
If you can, please visit the Texas Parks & Wildlife web page at

I love Mathis and I don't want to see it disappear forever.

Pronghorn Puzzle, Changing Habitats & Blanco Cleanup
Lone Star Land Steward: Pecore Farm
Bert Pecore wasn’t always a conservationist. He let cattle overgraze the land and overworked the soil. However, he changed his ways 10 years ago, after having already owned his ranchlands for 51 years. By implementing sustainable wildlife and habitat management practices, Pecore and his wife restored their 196-acre ranch in Fayette County to its native grassland glory.
Parks & Wildlife People: Ethan Belicek
When flood waters hit Blanco State Park in May of 2015, Ethan Belicek and his team took care of the park guests and cleaned up the mess.
The Pronghorn Puzzle
Something is amiss with pronghorn antelope populations on the Marfa Plateau, but a coalition of landowners, biologists, and concerned citizens is on the case. Find out what is being done to bolster dwindling pronghorn numbers while researchers investigate possible reasons for the sudden decline.
Choke Canyon State Park
If you like catfish then this is a park you have to visit. The 26,000 acre Choke Canyon Reservoir is a catfishing haven, and is really good for bass fishing as well. Birders love the hiking trails and the large numbers and varieties of birds attracted to the water and upland habitats, including many Mexican species of birds.
Wild Things: Black-capped Vireo Nests
Get an up close look at the endangered Black-capped Vireo. We travel to Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge during nesting season for these birds.
