Boston's Swan Boats Come To Life
Taking a ride through the public garden pond on a Swan Boat is a Boston tradition. Starting in 1877, this year marks the 141st season of the operation. So just how do they make their appearance each year, fresh paint coat and all? In this audio slideshow, WGBH News' Matt Baskin finds out how it's done.

BOSTON PUBLIC GARDENS ON A LATE SUMMER DAY - DUCKS, SWAN BOATS - BOSTON COMMON
I arrived by train into Boston's South Station. It was early morning and the place was an absolute mob scene.
Getting off the Amtrak Acela, I made my way through the barrage of people and past the 45 deep line of people waiting for coffee at Dunkin' Donuts.
It looked awful. Throngs of zombie-like people, already sweating and looking strung out in uncomfortable business attire, making their way to jobs they hate.
Just the sight of it all was enough for me to seek the relative calm of Boston's famous Public Garden. I had been there before and the place had given me a peaceful feeling several times in the past.
Although the Public Garden is about four acres, the sounds of the city are still pretty evident. Horn honking and nearby construction unabashedly interrupts the mood. It's not really comparable to New York City's Central Park because it's so much smaller.
But the Public Garden makes up for its size with sheer beauty, exotic plants, and flawless landscaping. Although I'm not a fan of gardens or rare flora, it was interesting to read about flowers and trees that I never knew existed.
It was sunny during my walk, but the weather channel said it was supposed to rain later in the day. This might explain why the swan boats were docked. Luckily, I saw two real live swans intermingling with ducks, who seemed to be everywhere in the Public Garden.
The bridge going over the Public Garden's lake was a remarkable. Instead of a plain old overpass, it was designed to look like a miniature suspension bridge, similar to the Brooklyn Bridge.
Walking around, there were a mix of tourists, business people on their way to work, runners, and mothers going for a stroll with their kids. Some people simply sat on the park benches and read a book.
If you go, take the Green Line to Arlington Station. The Public Garden is right next door.
Some of the rare trees and flowers on display were:
Beech trees, European beech, Purple beech, Weeping European beech, River birch, Castor Aurelia, Western catalpa, Kwanzan cherry, Kentucky coffee tree, Tea crab, Bald CyprusElm trees, American elm, Belgian elm, Camperdown elm, English elm, Rock elm, Scotch elm, Horsechestnut, Japanese larch, Linden trees, Common linden, Littleleaf linden, Star magnolia, Maidenhair tree, Maple trees, Norway maple, Red maple, Silver maple, Oak trees, Burr oak, English oak, Pin oak, Pagoda trees, Pagoda tree, Weeping pagodaRedwood trees, Dawn redwood, Giant redwood, Silk tree, Silverbell, Japanese stewartia, Japanese tree lilac, Tuliptree, Tupelo, Yellowwood, Weeping willow.

BOSTON PUBLIC GARDEN--SWAN BOATS
Boston Public Garden Swan Boat
Boston Public Garden
The Public Garden was established in 1837 when philanthropist Horace Gray[4] petitioned for the use of land as the first public botanical garden in the United States. Grey helped marshal political resistance to a number of Boston City Council attempts to sell the land in question, finally settling the issue of devoting it to the Public Garden in 1856.[5] The Act establishing use of the land was submitted to the voters on 26 April 1856 where it passed with only 99 dissents. The Swan Boats are a fleet of dual-pontooned pleasure boats which operate in a pond in the Public Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The Swan Boats have been in operation since 1877, and have since become a cultural icon for the city. They operate beginning the second weekend of April and ending the third weekend in September.[1] Robert Paget first created the Swan Boats in the Public Garden in 1877 after operating a Row Boat rental operation, after seeing the opera Lohengrin with his wife Julia Paget. Inspired by the Knight's gallant rescue of the damsel by riding a Swan across the lake, Paget decided to capitalize on the recent popularity of the bicycle and combine boat with swan and bicycle on the water, and designed a two pontooned boat with two wooden benches and a brass seat on top of a paddlebox concealed by a swan. The driver would sit inside the swan and pedal passengers around the pond.Boston (pronounced Listeni/ˈbɒstən/) is the capital and largest city[10] of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. Boston also serves as county seat of Suffolk County. The largest city in New England, the city proper, covering 48 square miles (124 km2), had an estimated population of 645,966 in 2014,[11] making it the 24th largest city in the United States.[4] The city is the anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, home to 4.5 million people and the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the country.[7] Greater Boston as a commuting region[12] is home to 7.6 million people, making it the sixth-largest Combined Statistical Area in the United States
Las Vegas is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Nevada and the county seat of Clark County.[5] Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city known primarily for gambling, shopping, fine dining, and nightlife and is the leading financial and cultural center for Southern Nevada. The city bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its consolidated casino--hotels and associated entertainment. A growing retirement and family city, Las Vegas is the 31st-most populous city in the United States, with a population at the 2010 census of 583,756. The 2010 population of the Las Vegas metropolitan area was 1,951,269. Today, Las Vegas is one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
The major attractions in Las Vegas are the casinos and the hotels. Most of the hotel casinos are in the city's downtown area, which has been the focal point of the city's gaming industry since its early days.
Most casinos are downtown on the Fremont Street Experience, The Stratosphere being the major exception. Fremont East, adjacent to the Fremont Street Experience, was granted variances to allow bars to be closer together, similar to the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, the goal being to attract a different demographic than the Strip attracts.
Las Vegas got its start with casinos in 1931 with the opening of the Northern Club (now the La Bayou).[31][32] The most notable of the early casinos may have been Binion's Horseshoe (now Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel) while it was run by Benny Binion. Boyd Gaming has a major presence downtown operating the California Hotel and Casino, Fremont Hotel and Casino and the Main Street Casino. The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino is the oldest hotel in the Fremont Street Experience. The Golden Nugget is the largest hotel and casino in the city. The Plaza Hotel & Casino on Main Street was the railway station until Amtrak discontinued service. Other casinos include the El Cortez, The D, Four Queens, Gold Spike Hotel and Casino and the Las Vegas Club.
The gambling and entertainment industry in Las Vegas is mostly focused in the Las Vegas Strip. The Strip is not actually located in city limits, but instead in the surrounding unincorporated communities of Paradise and Winchester. The largest and most notable casinos and buildings are located there.

United States Drone Flight: Boston is Massachusetts capital and largest city. Founded in 1630, its one of the oldest cities in the U.S. The key role it played in the American Revolution is highlighted on the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walking route of historic sites that tells the story of the nations founding. One stop, former meeting house Faneuil Hall, is a popular marketplace. “Beantown” is home to Symphony Hall, where the legendary Boston Pops orchestra performs, and Fenway Park, where the beloved Red Sox baseball team plays. Famous cultural institutions include the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, housing a world-class collection in a space designed like a 15th-century Venetian palazzo. Popular strolling spots include the Public Garden, featuring iconic swan boats; Newbury Street, offering upscale shopping; the Waterfront, dotted with seafood and chowder restaurants; and the North End, abundant with Italian bakeries and cafes.
