Zion National Park, Utah - Temple of Sinawava
Riverside Walk Virgin River Temple of Sinawava Zion National Park
Also known as the Gateway to the Narrows, this is a relatively easy 2 mile round trip hike on a paved path along the Virgin River. The contrasting colors and topography of the river and vegetation at the base of the Zion Canyon walls are dramatic. The Temple of Sinawava is the last shuttle stop at the north end of Zion Canyon. The Narrows Hike at Zion National Park, Utah - Wall Street towards Big Springs (4k 2017)
The Narrows is the narrowest section of Zion Canyon. This gorge, with walls a thousand feet tall and the river sometimes just twenty to thirty feet wide, is one of the most popular areas in Zion National Park located in Utah.
A hike through The Narrows requires hiking in the Virgin River. You must get your feet wet since there is no trail. Most people choose to start their hike from the Temple of Sinawava via the Riverside Walk and then walk upstream before turning around and hiking back down to the Temple of Sinawava, which is what we did.
Our goal was to hike a couple miles up the river, then come back down. We were so captivated by the scenery and spectacular views that we lost track of time and distance. We ended up hiking a little over 9 miles round-trip, almost making it to Big Springs.
After the hike, we were beat. This was due to our decision to wear old hiking shoes instead of more appropriate footwear for walking on water. Our shoes did not allow water to flow through, making our feet heavy with each step and causing severe ankle and knee pain due to the weight and lack of ankle support. I recommend renting a pair of 5.10 Canyoneers, Neoprene Socks, and Hiking Pole at the Zion Outfitters before this hike.

American Southwest (#26): Zion National Park, Utah
Zion ... immutable yet ever changing, the cliffs of Zion stand resolute, a glowing presence in late day, a wild calm. Melodies of waters soothe desert-parched ears, streams twinkle over stone, wren song cascades from red rock cliffs, and cottonwood leaves jitter on the breeze. But when lightning flashes water falls erupt from dry cliffs, and floods flash down waterless canyons exploding log jams, hurling boulders, croaking wild joyousness, and dancing stone and water and time. Zion is alive with movement, a river of life always here and always changing.
Everything in Zion takes life from the Virgin River's scarce desert waters. Water flows, and solid rock melts into cliffs and towers. Landscape changes as canyons deepen to create forested highlands and lowland deserts. A ribbon of green marks the river's course as diverse plants and animals take shelter and thrive in this canyon oasis. From the beginning people sought this place, this sanctuary in the desert's dry reaches. The very name Zion, a Hebrew word for refuge, evokes its significance.
Zion National Park is located along the edge of a region known as the Colorado Plateau. The rock layers have been uplifted, tilted, and eroded, forming a feature called the Grand Staircase, a series of colorful cliffs stretching between Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon. The bottom layer of rock at Bryce Canyon is the top layer at Zion, and the bottom layer at Zion is the top layer at the Grand Canyon.
Hiking the Zion Narrows - Zion National Park
#zionnationalpark #zionnarrows #zionnarrowshike #besthikesintheworld
Hiking the Zion Narrows is a bucket list experience to be sure. It's considered one of the absolute best trails in the world and it's a hike nearly anyone can enjoy.
Hike the full 16 miles or just a few. Whatever you're up to. Here's what you'll need to know before heading out:
Plan on getting wet. The vast majority of the hike will be in the river. Wear closed toed shoes. Make sure to check the flow rate of the Virgin River before beginning your hike (info available at Zion National Park visitor center). Even on hot days, the narrows can be quite cold. Be prepared. Check air and water temperatures before heading out.
Start at the Temple of Sinawava (southern end) or Chamberlain's Ranch (northern end - PERMIT REQUIRED). If you begin at the southern end you can hike 5 miles to Big Spring but you will require a permit to venture further. 10 miles out and back total.
No toilets or trash receptacles anywhere along the trail. Pack out ALL of your waste. Please leave absolutely no trace.

Zion National Park is Busy! | VLOG 35
We watched over 30 vehicles get towed at Zion. They're serious about parking! But, parking aside Zion is one of our favorite hiking places, the views are incredible, the waterfalls are tall, and the canyons are more accessible than the Grand Canyon. Oh, and don't forget the crazy long tunnel on the way into the canyon!
Check out our latest VLOG as we explore Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and are pleasantly surprised by the unique geological formations at Cathedral Gorge.
