The Striper Migration:
Every winter, anticipation builds for the arrival of migrating striped bass. Each year is different, and exact timing seems to be strongly influenced by water temperatures along the Atlantic coast.
By tracking fishing reports from charter captains, contributors, and readers at OnTheWater.com, we have been mapping the striped bass spring migration from the Mid-Atlantic to Maine since 2015. Each year has been very different and provided some interesting insight into the timing of the striper migration.
2015: A historically snowy and cold winter kept water temperatures cool well into the spring, delaying the striped bass migration and resulting in later arrivals than most fishermen could recall in recent history. Yet, by mid-June, big striped bass were reported from the Jersey Shore to southern Maine.
2016: A strong El Nino blessed the East Coast with a mild winter, and the migration got off to an early start. Big bass appeared in Raritan Bay by mid-April, and fresh schoolie stripers arrived early to New England. However, by June, the maps for 2015 and 2016 looked almost identical.
2017: Bitter cold weather in March delayed the striper spawn in the Chesapeake and slowed the start of the migration. In mid-May, big post-spawn bass showed up off northern New Jersey to chow down on bunker. Remarkably, schools of bass, including many fish over 30 pounds, arrived in Cape Cod waters earlier than usual, and it seemed as if large numbers of fish bypassed Long Island waters.
2018: Another cold spring delayed the striper spawn and had many anglers lamenting that the migration was running about two weeks behind schedule. While this meant a slow start in parts of Cape Cod and Massachusetts, it also meant a longer spring season for anglers in Western Long Island Sound and off Long Island’s South Shore.

November 2, 2017 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
Things are finally starting to return to some sort of normalcy after the big storm that hammered New England over the weekend. Some places experienced wind gusts in excess of 70 or even 80 miles per hour, and this charged up some major seas which ended the fishing in some areas while turning it on in others as so often happens with weather like this. Looking forward to the weekend the early forecast looks very fishy, so let’s see what’s going on across New England.
Connecticut
• In-between weather events over the last week blackfishing remains good locally. AW Marina has had some hefty white-chinners weighed-in for their Last Tog Round-Up. Top fish remains a 10.25-pounder but they’ve had a good number of 9-plus-pounders brought to the scale. I spoke with a local togger yesterday and he has a feeling that the next 2 weeks after the waters clean up inshore might be the best window for the fall tog season. Just remember that the 2017 Dream Boat Challenge continues through November 30, so there is still time to hit the leaderboard for your shot at winning the Steiger Craft DV Miami boat!
• As a reminder, Capt. Greg of the Black Hawk has officially moved from his usual summer dock in Niantic to his late fall and winter dockage in Stonington to allow for faster access to the Block Island grounds. So long as the weather allows, they make their first trip of the season out of Stonington on Friday.
Rhode Island
• Much like in the CT discussion, fishing has been good in Rhody on the days when it doesn’t blow 70 miles per hour and the seas are less than 3-footers. Blackfish are still hanging shallow but there was a feeling that the bigger fish have begun to move deeper. Maybe this recent weather will help nudge them out a bit further. Sea bass and scup catches—two more Dream Boat eligible species to go along with blackfish—have also been quite good when the local boats can sail. With the Dream Boat Challenge ending in just under a month, the next few weeks mark your last chance to make a push at wining the Grand Prize boat!
Massachusetts
• Up in Massachusetts there is still a lot of mixed species to target from trout and bass in the lakes and ponds to stripers and blackfish in the ocean. But what is causing the biggest stir is the continued false albacore bite taking place. Our friends from the Derby out on Martha’s Vineyard report that they still have albies all around the island and both shore and boat anglers have been doing quite well. There is plenty of bait to hold them in place so hopefully this lasts another few weeks.

Mahi Morning Offshore Fishing Aboard Dan's Legacy
We were fishing offshore of Ocean City, Maryland in the Baltimore Canyon. We did an overnighter but did not make it out till dark because of major boat trailer issues that took the whole day to fix. We sharked in the dark and caught a hammerhead and a bunch of mackerel. We had thousands of mackerel under the boat. In the morning we had a billfish slash 2 baits and what we believe was a bigeye that came unglued. Because my father was feeling pretty sick we ended the trip by doing some mahi fishing.
2011-10-19 Atlantic Highlands Storm 2
Wind out of the east, the only direction with no protection at Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina. Winds were 15 to 25, waves a short choppy two to three feet. We were bouncing pretty good in our 50,000 pound 46 foot boat.
