Art Museum of South Texas: Virtual Tour of the William B. and Maureen Miller Wing
The creation of this virtual tour is described in my WordPress blog:
The tour was created by A. Javier Huerta of Corpus Christi, Texas (CKL Architects), at my suggestion. At the time, the Art Museum of South Texas desperately needed a tool to revitalize donor interest in a capital campaign for the new building illustrated herein. We needed something that took the architectural renderings from flat drawings to 3-D, as if it were already constructed. This virtual tour worked very well. AMST raised the funds required and the building was constructed. Javier was fabulous to work with!

5 Top Tourist Attractions in Corpus Christi
The city of Corpus Christi, on an inlet to the north of Brownsville, has grown in popularity over the years and is now one of the most visited tourist destinations in Texas. Much of the attraction is due to its beautiful coastal setting, its many miles of beaches, its important conservation areas, and rich flora and fauna. The area was settled after Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda arrived in 1519, the man responsible for giving the pretty tropical bay its Latin name of Corpus Christi (translated literally as the Body of Christ). These days, this attractive city is as likely to be called the Texas Riviera, and for good reason: numerous fine hotels and resorts, along with many exciting attractions and events have helped cement Corpus Christi's reputation as a must-visit destination.

Tejano Talks #9 - South Texas Leaders - (2017)
After the Alamo, Mexican Americans became second-class citizens in their own land.
Tejanos, American citizens, were treated like animals, shot and dragged by Texas Rangers. Uncalled for lynchings, theft of property and outright discrimination was rampant in the American southwest. Trailblazing Hispanics, Tejanos, fought for their Civil Rights and without this, Texas and our nation would not have prospered.
In the late 19th century, Tejano journalist and activist Catarino Garza travelled from community-to-community urging the ranchers and farmers to organize or their culture and style of life would forever be lost.
Alonso Perales, from Alice, was a leader who helped form LULAC. He was a civil rights lawyer and diplomat.
Jovita and Eduardo Idar came from a newspaper family and as journalists fought against discrimination in their columns and editorials. The had newspapers in Laredo and Brownsville.
Emma Tenayuca was a labor organizer and civil rights leader.. She is perhaps best remembered for her role in organizing the largest strike in San Antonio history, the Pecan Shellers Strike in 1938,Pecan-Shellers’ Strike.
In 1929 the first League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) convention was held in Corpus Christi and Ben Garza from Corpus Christi was elected president. Civil rights and access to education became the center objectives for their agenda
Among the most courageous was J.T. Canales, a state legislator and a superintendent of schools in the Rio Grande Valley. He too helped found LULAC but is best known for taking on the Texas Rangers. Upset with the atrocities committed by the Rangers against his fellow Tejanos, as a state legislator, he filed, on January 31, 1918, nineteen charges against the Texas Rangers and demanded a legislative investigation and the reorganization of the force. .
Dr. Hector Perez Garcia founded the American G.I .Forum in Corpus Christi and chapters spread throughout Texas and the nation. Protecting rights of Hispanic veterans and fighting for just in the education system became their battle cry. Education is our freedom, and freedom should be everybody’s business” became his rallying cry as he fought for civil rights and opportunity for his people
Dr. Garcia’s sister – Dr. Clotilde Garcia – was on the Del Mar College board and was a leader in Spanish Genealogy research.
Ramsey Muniz from Corpus Christi ran governor under the flag of La Raza Unida Party in the 1970s.
In Corpus Christi the Bonilla family became prominent leaders in civil rights and community organizations and gained state office. All earned law degrees. Tony became a state legislator. Mary Helen was elected to the State Board of Education. Tony and Ruben were of national politics as well as state and national leaders in LULAC. William founded the law firm Bonila & Chapa.
Kingsville state rep Irma Rangel became a power house in the legislature, the first Mexican American woman to serve in that capacity, and was instrumental in getting the Texas A&M College of Pharmacy in Kingsville.
State Rep. Carlos F. Truan wrote the Texas Bilingual Education Act of 1969. At the time, the state had an English-only law and an 80 percent dropout rate among Hispanics.
Carlos Guerra from Robstown and Jose Angel Gutierrez from Crystal City, both former students at Texas A&I in Kingsville, were the leaders of the Chicano political movement in the 1970s
There are many more who deserve mention, but it is important to note that there are civil rights heroes right here in South Texas. The struggle for civil rights also included Tejanos and a good portion of that battled occurred right in our backyards..
