Hiking All of Cinque Terre, Italy IN ONE DAY
If you've ever wondered what it's like to hike Cinque Terre, this is it. Come along as we hike from Monterosso to Riomaggiore and explore Vernazza, Corniglia, and Manarola along the way.
I also wanted to give you an overall travel guide to hiking Cinque Terre, so here are all the distances and details (with timestamps from the video):
Start: 9.21am get off train in Monterosso (0:01)
30 minutes - explore Monterosso, walk over to trail head (0:13)
9.57am - Buy tickets on the trail, 7.50 euro each. (0:41) Medium-ly difficult hike to Vernazza on main Coastal Trail #2 (0:48) (3.3km, 2.1mi)
11.20am - Arrive in Vernazza (1:32), explore for 40 minutes, or an hour if you want to go up to the castle
12.00 noon - difficult hike to Corniglia on main Coastal Trail #2 (2:02). Up from Vernazza is hard, but going down to Corniglia is easy. (3.2km, 2mi)
1.25pm - Arrive in Corniglia (2:26), Explore for 35 minutes
2.00pm - Very difficult hike to Manarola via Volastra. (3:01) Trail #2 was still closed due to landslides. We took Trail 587 (also known as 7a depending on which sign you're looking at) - very difficult climb, but pretty. Hike up 30 minutes until it connects with Trail 586 (still called trail 7a on some maps, also 6d) at 3:23. Take a right and climb a little higher until it levels out. Follow this for 50 minutes through vineyards straight into Volastra (4:25) and you'll see signs for Manarola. This is Trail 506 (or 6).
Down the 1100+ steps for 10 minutes (4:39). (total 5.5km, 3.4mi)
3.52pm - Arrive in Manarola (4:45), explore for 1 hour (includes eating too)
4.50pm - Via dell'Amore is still closed, so we took Trail 531 up and over (5:37). Very steep up (600+ stairs), slippery steep rock/sandy trail down. Difficult, but short. (1km, 0.62mi)
5.38pm - Arrive in Riomaggiore (6:35)
5.45pm - Take the train back to La Spezia (6:45)

Cinque Terre - timelapse from Italy (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore)
Cinque Terre which means Five lands is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera between Genoa and La Spezia. The area is part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cinque Terre is a very popular tourist destination and comprises of five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. These unique villages hide between green, steep hills and the turquoise Ligurian sea. The villages pastel-coloured houses are built on top of rocks in the rugged, steep landscape. Cinque Terre is located in the coastal region Liguria which is popular with tourists for its beaches, towns and cuisine. Travel between the five villages can be done either by train, by boat or by hiking the beautiful trails that connect the villages.
Monterosso is the first village we meet on our journey through Cinque Terre. This is in my opinion the least exciting of the five villages. Monterosso has several hotels and a long beach with deck-chairs and umbrellas. The center of Monterosso has a nice atmosphere with pastel-coloured houses, artisan shops and many small streets.
Vernazza is simply breathtaking and very popular among tourists. Vernazza was original the only village with a natural harbour so ships departed from here and as a result, Vernazza became the most prosperous village. The first records about Vernazza goes all the way back to 1080. On 25 October 2011, Vernazza was struck by massive flooding, and mudslides that left the town buried in over 4 metres of mud, causing over 100 million euro worth of damage. Today the main source of revenue for Vernazza is tourism. However, as a testimony to the strength of centuries-old tradition, fishing, wine and olive oil production still continue.
Corniglia is the smallest and least crowded of the Cinque Terre villages. The population of the village is about 150. It is located 100 meters above sea level and thus not so easily accessesble from it's train station as the other villages and it doesn't have a harbour, so boats don't stop here. The walk from the train station to the village include climbing the Lardarina stairway with 382 steps. But there is also an easy option: the local electronic buses. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and is surrounded on three sides by terraces and vineyards, the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. The history of the village goes back to Roman times. According to the legend, Corniglia was founded by a wine producer, who named the village after his mother, Cornelia.
Manarola – along with Vernazza – is registered among the most beautiful small villages of Italy. Most of the houses are pastel-coloured and many are built on top of the rugged coast. Colours and lights are best here in the evening hours, before sunset. Manarola's primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The village is famous for it's sweet Sciacchetrà wine.
Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the Cinque Terre and is known for it's historic character and its wine. The village was built in the valley of the Rivus Maior (river), hence the name. The river is now running under the main street. The main street and the railway station are connected by a long pedestrian tunnel with beautiful mosaics. Riomaggiore is like a labyrinth of alleys and steps. The houses are built close to one another, so not much sun enters the back alleys and they are thus nice and cool during the hot summer months. Riomaggiore is divided into two by the railway line. The area by the sea with the colourful little boats (gozzi), small seafood restaurants, rocky beach and where tourists enjoy the mediterranean sun. The upper part is the agricultural village (borgo dei contadini) surrounded by terraces.

Cinque Terre National Park, La Spezia, Italy, Europe
The Cinque Terre National Park is a protected area inducted as Italy's first national park in 1999. Located in the province of La Spezia, Liguria, northern Italy, it is the smallest national park in Italy at 4,300 acres, but also the densest with 5,000 permanent inhabitants among the five towns. In addition to the territory of the towns of Cinque Terre (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare), the Cinque Terre National Park encompasses parts of the communes of Levanto (Punta Mesco) and La Spezia (Campiglia Sunsets). Cinque Terre was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The collection of five cliff-side towns on the Ligurian Coast linked by a series of trails highlights a delicate relationship between man and the environment. As modification of the landscape has been so vital for the area's development and tourist industry, the National Park is an essential tool in preserving and maintaining the natural landscape while promoting sustainable tourism that vital to the economic success of Cinque Terre. To achieve its objectives, the Park Organization encourages the development of responsible tourism, able therefore to invest in the identity of the places and the territory's products, and thus save its immense heritage of terracing, now endangered. The past three decades have seen a significant growth in tourism, in turn providing new economic opportunities for places like Cinque Terre. Ecotourism is a branch of the industry with immense benefits, as its aim is the enjoyment and appreciation of a natural landscape in an environmentally-conscious manner. For tourists, there is often an expectation of a pristine untouched environment, and an interest in the local population as a part of that landscape. In Cinque Terre, the greatest draw for tourists are the hiking trails where one can experience breathtaking scenery among authentic traditional settlements. This socio-cultural element is essential as it highlights the heritage and culture of the picturesque Italian villages. Cinque Terre's popularity can be contributed to the establishment of the park in 1999 and the addition to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, both of which embrace ecotourism and the need for sustainability. A result of extensive efforts towards infrastructure, improvement of accessibility and sustainable practices, the park has developed the site, and increased its appeal on the global scale. While conservation policy can sometimes subordinate the environment and local interests in the favor of promoting tourism, that is not the case in Cinque Terre, where there is such large personal investment from the local population. In fact, locals and park representatives work in tandem to understand and adapt to changing tourist needs while mitigating negative environmental consequences. In order to maintain responsible and sustainable tourism within a community, certain criteria must be met. Foremost, the tourism must be culturally appropriate. As a World Heritage Site, Cinque Terre embraces its traditions and culture and expands the tourist experience beyond a hike through the hills. The National Park makes a connection to the place with authentic customs, foods and wines. Second, is the importance of land tenure and connection to the land, which Cinque Terre addresses with lifestyles that depend on both land and water. It is this strong connection to the environment that continues to bring tourists to these towns imbedded perfectly in the coastal hills. Finally, what gives Cinque Terre so much potential for sustainable tourism are the local benefits that stretch beyond economics. As tourism is now so ingrained in the towns, the social benefits of interaction are evident and foster a sense of empowerment and pride that comes with caring for a protected land that millions enjoy. At UNESCO’s meeting on December 5, 1997, The Cinque Terre, Portovenere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, were added to its World Heritage List under the heading of a cultural landscape. An important site both environmentally and culturally, it was described as “the harmonious interaction between people and nature to produce a landscape of exceptional beauty. The Cinque Terre National Park was established on October 6, 1999 in recognition of the territory's considerable scenic, agricultural, historical and cultural value. The five medieval towns along the Ligurian Coast provide scenic views of rugged terrain reeled in with terraced stone walls, where the mountains of 'Appennino Ligure come straight to the sea.

CINQUE TERRE It's A Difficult Hike! It Took 6 Hours But It Was Worth It.
We read online that the Hike between towns is not that difficult and should only take a couple of hours. This was not our experience but it is still worth it as the beauty is unmatched!
To save money we stayed in La Spezia, a town just outside Cinque Terre. Then we got a two day train pass for our family to travel back and forth between towns. It ended up being a great idea. Plus La Spezia is a nice Italian town as well.
Cinque Terre, which means Five Lands, comprised of the five small coastal villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso located in the Italian region of Liguria. We hiked the Blue trail which links all five towns. This trail is long, treacherous at some points, and absolutely beautiful. We loved Cinque Terre and recommend it to anyone up for an adventure. See how ours unfolds.

Places to see in ( La Spezia - Italy ) Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Venere
The regional natural park of Porto Venere is a natural park in the province of La Spezia , in Liguria . It includes the municipality of Porto Venere , with the islands of Palmaria , Tino and Tinetto. Since 1997 the Porto Venere park, together with the islands Palmaria , Tino , Tinetto and the Cinque Terre has been included among the UNESCO world heritage of ' UNESCO.
The first provisions for the protection of the Porto Venere region date back to the regional law n. 12 of 1985 . In 1999 , shortly after the Cinque Terre National Park , the Regional Natural Park of the promontories and the Islands of the Levant was established. In 2001 , the regional law nº 30 defined the park in its current form.
The Regional Natural Park of Porto Venere offers a unique landscape with its high coasts, caves, vegetation that in every season permeates the environment with the changing shades of color. An element that melts and harmonises every detail is the sea, at times calm and crystalline, so as to reflect, like a mirror, enchanted multicolored rocks and the flight of seagulls, sometimes moved and almost angry when, roaring, it shatters against the rock on which it stands the Church of San Pietro. To crown the Park the archipelago with the three islands Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, who challenge the blue sea in a swirl of aromas and glances towards the infinite.

MANAROLA, CINQUE TERRE (Fraz.
