I Didn't Like Margate. Then I Did. Then I Didn't. | Day Trip To Margate from London Vlog
Margate on the Kent Coast is somewhere I'd been wanting to go for a few years. I'd heard mixed things about this seaside town from it being run down, to being a Shoreditch by the Sea, to it being Kent's Copenhagen!
I found a return train ticket from London for £20.00 so I decided to take a day trip from London to Margate to check it out for myself!
I went to the Turner Contemporary Gallery, went to Beet Bar for lunch, went in such of some vintage shops, chilled on the beach and of course got some hot donuts.
Overall I wasn't a fan of Margate but I did go through phases of liking it and not liking it as you can see in this video and read about in my blog post below.

Pluckley in Kent is know to be one of the most haunted village in England, this picturesque Kentish village is certainly steeped in ghost stories, whether based on actual sightings or just modern folklore.

The County of Kent which has long been known as the “Garden of England” now offers a haute cuisine in the home counties which perhaps makes taking that short break to France unnecessary..............Adding to this attraction are many picturesque and historic towns, green rolling downs, and a dramatic coastline of white chalk cliffs set beside blue seas....I stated my tour in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent’s fine spa town which has been attracting the aristocratic and famous since 1619.
Here, perhaps the world's oldest shopping precinct is to be found - the Pantiles - a perfectly preserved example of a 17th century high street - where the good times to be had in those days - gave the English language the expression a night on the tiles.
Many famous writers have chosen to spend time in Tunbridge Wells, not least William Makepeace Thackery.
The 17th century house where the author of Vanity Fare stayed is now Thackery's - a very fine restaurant serving in an atmospheric setting locally sourced game, meats, fish, dairy and vegetables.
Under Head Chef Richard Phillips, in the last ten years Thackery’s has won many accolades including a Michelin Star, and three AA Rosettes.
Richard started his career at London’s Savoy Hotel, before going on to work alongside the Roux Brothers, and then becoming Head Chef for Marco Pierre White at the Criterion, Mirabelle and Les Saveurs.

“Global Warming” is good news for the wine growers of England, as for each degree of temperature rise, the northern most limit where wines can be produced in the UK extends by 100 miles.
Chapel Down Winery at Tenterden in Kent, a short drive from Tunbridge Wells through beautiful rolling countryside dotted with quaint thatched cottages, offers the chance to find just how good English wines now are.
Walk through the vineyard, see the grapes being pressed and the wine produced, before visiting the shop and restaurant to taste the fruits of the vineyard workers labours.
Here I discovered to be outstanding in the sparkling category, the Pinot Reserve 2004 - a Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc blend - with a rich complex nose and hints of strawberries and apples on the palate - superior to many Champagnes I have tasted.....THANET AND THE KENT COAST......The famous Kent seaside resorts of Margate, Ramsgate, and Broadstairs, each boasting fine sandy beaches, historic old quarters with narrow winding streets, and attractive harbours, are situated in an area known as the Isle of Thanet – so named because in Roman times it was separated from the rest of Kent by the sea......Thanet is now undergoing a renaissance led by the recent opening of a major new art gallery - the Turner Contemporary - overlooking Margate Harbour....Eddie Gilbert's Restaurant in Ramsgate offers superb, creatively cooked and presented seafood, served in an informal and relaxed setting above the restaurant’s own fish mongers situated near the harbour....At the time of my visit for starters there was a choice of local Kent Oysters or Rock Oysters from Northern Ireland's Lough Strangford. Pan fried king scallops and beetroot and dill cured salmon also feature as well as the highly recommended Crispy Smoked Eel Soldiers with Soft Boiled Duck Egg.
Headlining the main courses were the Whole Grilled Ramsgate Lobster with Garlic and Parsley Butter and the John Dory with Battered Calamari and Wilted Spinach - perfectly accompanied by a chilled bottle of Gribble Bridge 2009 from Kent's own Biddenden Vinyard.

Picture Agatha Christie's detective Miss Marple solving a murder mystery in the setting of grand seaside hotel in early to mid 20th century Britain - this is how Margate's wonderfully eccentric Walpole Bay Hotel is today.
Little changed since it first opened it's doors at the end of the First World War the Walpole is essentially a museum hotel with rooms furnished and decorated in keeping with decades of the 20th century.
The charismatic owner and hostess Jane Bishop - who once featured in the TV reality show The Hotel Inspector, has a number of celebrity clients who love the novelty of staying at the Walpole. ( walpolebayhotel.co.uk)

Picaroons Traditional Ales reminds people to send their high-res cat pictures in to their melonhead contest, deadline is one week away on April 24th. Dooryard Summer Wheat Ale is due to be released on Earth Day, April 22nd, look for it in all the usual spots. Picaroons decided to jump on the ISA train and have just finished brewing The Brick ISA, Imperial Scotch Ale that is. It is a low-hopped malt-forward brew with fruity esters all the while being blanketed by a subtle smokiness and alcoholic warmth. Trail Way Brewing Company seems to have a never ending new beer releases. They have a Black Hops One Black IPA they have kegged. The East Coast Beer Nerds have got credit for naming it.
Big Spruce/ North Brewing/ Uncle Leos's/ Wrought Iron Brewing jointly brewed British IPA this week. The batch will be delivered to the Race The Kegs NS Craft Beer Week event in Halifax by sail boat. It was brewed with organic Pale Anglais micro malted barley from Malterie Frontenac, and heavily hopped with East Kent Goldings hop.
More details on the Boxing Rock Brewing and The Ladies' Beer League International Women's Day collaboration brew. Cinnamon Spin is a Robust Porter with a pile of cinnamon and molasses. Boxing Rock says it is Big, dark, malty and roasty, with notes of coffee, chocolate, with the teensiest bit of fruitiness in the background, this is everything a Robust Porter should be, including its 6.5% ABV strength. We added two big forward features to this palette. Cinnamon and molasses. The combination is quite complimentary of the porter, and we think it's a winner. Because this beer was brewed in observance of International Women's Day, Boxing Rock are donating a portion of the profits from this beer to the Shelburne County Women's Fishnet bursary program and the Halifax Sexual Health Centre. It is going to be launched at Stillwell Beer Bar on Saturday April 18, at 6:30 pm. with bottles bottles and growlers available in the usual spots
North Brewing Company is expanding again with their biggest tank yet at 2400 L. This will help with better supply of their beers.
Propeller Brewing Company has a couple of beers out. They have a new One Hit Wonder called All Tapped Out with 6 hop varieties, 72 IBUs and 6.9% ABV. Available in growlers at the Prop Shops. They have a new seasonal out, Rye IPA hit the shelves at both Prop Shop locations this week in 650ml bottles and comes in at 6.8% ABV.
Rogues Roost release a new Double IPA this week. Not a lot of details but I am sure it is great.
Rudders Brew Pub released that Lager beer will be back on tap at Rudder's this summer. Lighthouse Lager 2.0 is in the fermenter and should be out in June.
Schoolhouse Brewery has a cool project planned. They say We have seen our beer production from grain to glass now we are going to see our beer go from field to glass. The Southfield project says one field one beer. They are using a two acre field to produce barley and hops for an authentic Bluenose beer.
Tatamagouche Brewing Company also expanded this week by adding more tanks in time for summer.
New brewery alert in New Brunswick, Scared Men Brewing is now getting financing together and will give more details this summer. They have a fundraiser going on Friday, May 15 at 7:00pm at the Pub Down Under in Saint John, New Brunswick. More details soon.
News for the waterfront, Stillwell Beergarden will be opening around the end of May to provide beer and food with a Nova Scotia angle. Look for details to come forward over the next month.
There are all kinds of events popping up for Nova Scotia Craft Beer Week, look for a wrap up in two weeks of all the events I can find.

Sophie Herxheimer - Travel Better London
We teamed up with thirteen London poets to bring 'poetiquette' to all travellers across the network.
Sophie was a Poet in Residence at Knightsbridge Tube station.
Sophie moves between painting, drawing, print and poetry. Projects have included hand-making a 300-metre tablecloth for the Thames Festival, featuring personal stories about food collected from over 1000 Londoners, and a woman-sized concrete poem about Mrs Beeton, sited next to her grave in West Norwood.
She has held residencies for London International Festival of Theatre, London Printworks Trust, Marine Studios, Margate and Fermynwoods Contemporary Art. Sophie has illustrated five collections of fairy tales, and taught at Central St. Martins, the British Library, Turner Contemporary and many other places.
Sophie recently created work for London Lines, a project for Southbank Centre. She has made two artist's books of poetry and drawing, Hurricane Butter (2012) and Ghost Hotel (2013), and is currently collaborating on two more artists' books. She will be showing new paintings and text pieces at the Bargehouse in December. Sophie lives in Brixton.

STORYLINE
Vietnamese authorities have released the former British glam rocker Gary Glitter from prison, where he served nearly three years after being convicted of child molestation.
According to Glitter's lawyer, Le Thanh Kinh, Vietnamese authorities plan to deport 64-year-old Glitter immediately.
Kinh has also said that the former rock star does not wish to return to the UK.
Glitter, real name Paul Francis Gadd, was convicted in March 2006 on charges of molesting two girls, ages ten and 11, from the southern coastal city of Vung Tau.
He served two years and nine months of a three-year sentence at Thu Duc prison, located 87 miles (140 kilometres) north of the capital Ho Chi Minh City.
The prison is the largest in Vietnam, housing more than 10-thousand prisoners, including roughly 100 foreigners.
Glitter said in a recent interview with Vietnamese newspaper Cong An Nhan Dan (People's Police) that he was thinking about resuming his singing career and that he might move to Hong Kong or Singapore.
On Wednesday, his exact location following his release remained unclear.
Prison director Tran Huu Thong said guards were transporting Glitter to the Ho Chi Minh City airport, some three hours away from the prison in Binh Thuan province.
One AP Television News cameraman outside the prison filmed a police vehicle with blacked out windows leaving the prison complex.
In his 1970s heyday, Glitter performed in glittery jumpsuits, silver platform shoes and bouffant wigs.
He sold 18 (m) million records and recorded a string of British top-10 hits.
His most successful song, the crowd-pleasing anthem Rock and Roll (Part 2) hit the top 10 in the United States, where it continues to bring sports fans to their feet with its rousing one-word chorus hey!.
Later, during the 1990s, the singer became something of a has-been, living off his past glory and doing occasional quiz shows and variety performances.
His fall from grace began in 1997, when he brought his laptop computer to a repair shop and an employee there discovered he had downloaded thousands of hardcore images of children.
Two years later, British authorities convicted him of possession of child pornography and Glitter served half of a four-month jail term.
He later went to Cambodia, but was expelled in 2002, after children's rights advocates protested his presence in the country.
Cambodian officials did not specify a crime or file charges against him.
Glitter has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence.

It's name is Greek word meaning Big Tooth. This giant mega shark is as one of the largest and most powerful attacking apex predators in the history of our planet.
Having been extinct for millions of years, The Megalodon has influenced pop culture as photos and drawings of this legendary shark continue to appear all over web with some websites and blogs dedicated to it.
Fossils indicate that the Megalodon Shark reached lengths of almost 70 feet, 20 meters long and was much wider and stockier than your typical great white shark believed to have weighed almost 100 tons. Blue Whales being slightly bigger can weigh over 100 tons.
The teeth of the Megalodon are gigantic, some found to be over 7 inches long. These tooth fossils have been discovered all over the world and at one point were believed to be petrified tongues of dragons & giant snakes.
The shark bite of the Megalodon is the sea creature's most impressive features as scientist estimate it's chomp to have created up to 18 tons of force, compared to that of a great white's bite which is less than 2 tons of force. With that kind of biting pressure the Megalodon could crush a whales skull as easily as a human child would bite into a grape making it the most powerful bite of any creature in history.
The Megalodon's closest living relative is the Great White Shark and although they have many similarities, their hunting patterns proved to be different. Great white sharks tend to attack the under belly or soft spot of their victims for a quick kill as the Megalodon's attacked with it's massive biting force to rip off the fins of other large fish before going in for the final kill.
A sea monster as deadly and powerful as the Megalodon dominated the oceans for millions of years, however no one knows why exactly they became extinct.
Was it global warming...A lack of food sources, or is it possible they still exists somewhere beyond our reach deep within the ocean depths.
