Beehive & Bowl Trails hike in Acadia National Park
Early October 2017 hike in Acadia National Park on the Beehive and Bowl trails. The hike utilizes iron rungs on parts to scale the side of cliffs with some exposure and great views of Sand Beach, Bar Harbor and the Mount Desert Narrows.
Acadia National Park - Maine
For an entire week in July, Jeremy and I road tripped through New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and the coast of Maine. Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor was the place we stayed the longest, and my favorite part of the trip. I put together this montage of short videos I took while in Acadia. Hope you enjoy!

Once upon a time on a perfect autumn day in Maine a family visited Acadia national park and climbed straight up the side of the fricken Beehive!
Great trip all around. I couldn't have asked for better weather or better company to hike the Beehive in Acadia. We hiked straight up Beehive and down the backside into The Bowl.
These are the days we live for.

Hiking Beehive Trail - Acadia National Park
Me and my wife Bethany hiking Beehive Trail at Acadia National Park on Mt. Dessert Island in Maine. One of the craziest and most precarious hikes in the U.S. Some might say most dangerous too but it didn't feel that way. Though it did keep you on your toes. Hiking Beehive Trail in Acadia National Park
Peak fall color hike in Acadia National Park in Maine. The Beehive Trail is roughly 1.6 miles long taking the Beehive up and the Bowl down.
Acadia National Park in 4K - Hiking the Beehive Trail!
The hike begins on the Bowl Trail, but soon the Beehive Trail goes off to the right. There is a sign warning of the danger of the climb. Parents should climb it first to determine if it is appropriate for their children. The first section of the Beehive Trail has iron rungs to allow climbers to ascend exposed, steep cliff faces and traverse narrow ledges. After reaching the top, hikers are rewarded with outstanding views of Sand Beach, Great Head, and Frenchman Bay. It's a short descent to The Bowl, a small pond nestled behind the Beehive. Descending the Beehive is dangerous and not advised. Return through a deciduous forest to the Loop Road on the Bowl Trail (0.8 miles) or, for a longer, more scenic loop, consider the Gorham Mountain Trail (1.4 miles) and Ocean Path (1 mile) back to Sand Beach.
The Beehive is a classic roche moutonnée, a geological feature that has a gradual slope to the north and a steep cliff to the south. As glaciers moved over the Beehive, melt water seeped into cracks on the south side and refroze. The glaciers slowly moved south plucking rock from the cliff side creating over time the rough and craggy south side of the mountain. The Beehive is also referred to as the Little Precipice Path. Both the Beehive and the Precipice Trail were built by Randolph Brunnow and are part of Acadia’s Historic Trail system. Their careful design testifies to the skill of the early trail builders.

THE BEEHIVE TRAIL in Under 2 Minutes - Acadia National Park
The Beehive Trail in Under 2 Minutes - Acadia National Park, Mt. Desert Island, Maine
The Beehive Trail (as it is called) is one of the best hikes in Acadia National Park. The Beehive Trail is rated as “Strenuous” and is approximately 0.8 miles/1.3 km long. Hiking is through woods to exposed cliffs. There are iron rungs on the ledges.
An exposed, iron rung climb not recommended for small children, for people with a fear of heights, or for anyone in wet weather. Good traction shoes are advised. This is a must do hike in Acadia National Park.

We took a trip up Maine to Acadia National Park for some Hiking and found some of the best hiking/climbs we have ever been on. Beehive is one of our favorites. It has to be one of the best climbs in the world. its a loop that features metal rungs burried into the rock faces and wooden bridges on the side of shear cliffs and is less than a mile long but changes about 500' in elevation. The entire video was shot on a GoPro Hero 3 camera. We also hit the world famous precipice trail stay tuned for that video!

Precipice Trail Hike - Acadia National Park - Bar Harbor, Maine 4k GoPro
It's been awhile since I got around to making a video so here it is. This was definitely one of the scarier possibly more dangerous hikes I've done so far but also one of the most fun! Visiting Acadia National Park was a first time for me and I wanted to see what these Iron Rung Hikes were all about and I was not disappointed. Despite my fear of heights it slowed my pace down quite a bit but nonetheless I was able to get through it without much of an issue. This is perfect for testing your rock scrambling/climbing abilities since there are some areas where it may be iffy for small children or people with movement issues.
I went during October during the fall foliage and even though it wasn't perfect the park/islands were all turning a nice rainbow color quite pleasing to the eye. Most, if not all, of Bar Harbor and the park gets shut down for the off-season so October was the perfect time to go and experience everything before that happens.
I hope the video isn't too bad as most of the hike was from my shoulder's point-of-view and was cut down/summarized into the more interesting portions of the hike. You can't really gauge the height in the video but take my word for it most people will get the vertigo feeling just by looking backwards while climbing or off the walking paths. If I come back this will able be a must-do when visiting Acadia National Park (or Bar Harbor, ME). My conquest of visiting all 50 States and US National Parks continues!

This follows the Gorham Mountain Hiking Trail from the summit to the start of the Bee Hive Trail. The views are even better on the decent. From the Bee Hive Trail you can either hike up the Bee Hive itself, head up Champlain Mountain and the Bowl, or come out onto the Park Loop road directly across from the Sand Beach parking lot.
