Where are we today that the kids are jumping out of the stroller in excitement to see?
Today we are checking out The Florida Aquarium in Tampa Florida for the first time. We are teaming up with our friends The Adventures of Ean and Sean and we cannot wait to see what’s inside.
Located in the Channel District of Downtown Tampa, The Florida Aquarium opened in March 1995 as a privately funded entity and became a public-private partnership when the city of Tampa assumed responsibility for its debt in 1999. In April of 2012, the AIA's Florida Chapter placed the Florida Aquarium on its list of Florida Architecture: 100 Years. 100 Places.
Previously known as the Clearwater Marine Science Center and located in Clearwater beach, Tampa approved the new downtown location in 1992 and it opened in March of 1995.

If you like Jellyfish The Florida Aquarium has you covered. There are touch tanks you can experience and the gift shop is full of them. The expansive shop features all sorts of things from clothing to keepsakes and gives you something to take home to remind you of the fun you have
The Florida Wetlands Trail shows you some of the natural environments you can find in florida, from the Suwanee river to the important mangrove eco system. Mangroves protect our shorelines from the damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and prevent flooding. They prevent erosion by stabilizing sediment with their root systems and maintain water quality by filtering pollutants and trapping sediments. You will see many native fish and birds such as the Florida catfish and snowy egret. These are beautiful and biologically diverse. Seeing them in person is amazing but seeing them indoors with ac and no mosquitoes also has it’s place.
Here we have the Stingray exhibit. Here you will find the Cownose Ray, Southern Stingray, and Blue Spotted Ribbontail Ray. None of these graceful creatures have bones, like sharks their skeletons are made of soft cartilage. Many have a venomous spine on their tail for defense.
There is a lot for the little ones to do here at The Florida Aquarium. There is a no bones touch tank, some shells to climb into and dippin dots for a mid play break.
Some of the best times here can just be exploring freely with friends.
Sea turtles are an important part of the Florida eco system. These beautiful creatures eat jellyfish which prevents the blooms that can be harmful and keep sponge populations down providing habitat for coral.
There are 7 species of sea turtles in the world and each are threatened by habitat loss, altered feeding grounds, trash and being caught by mistake. The Florida Aquarium rescue team has rescued and returned hundreds of sea turtles

There are photobooths about the aquarium so you can capture the fun in a one of a kind photo session. The kids love this!
There are more than 2,000 species of jellyfish in the world and you can find many in Florida’s waters. Jellyfish have no brain, heart, eyes or bones. The have a bag-like bodies and stinging tentacles. There are invertebrates who use their tentacles to stun or paralyze their prey. They’ve been around millions of years, even before the dinosaurs and are found in warm and cold waters. They are an especially tasty meal to sea turtles.
Sharks do not have bones either, like stingrays their skeletons are cartilage. They are hypothesized to have been in the ocean for 455 million years.
Here we have the native Florida Ian. He has been around for 5 years and his diet consists of goldfish, chicken, and pizza
There are so many tanks that will catch your eye and so many sea creatures to learn about. It is amazing.
It looks like Ean has made a friend!
They may look scary but everything here has it’s place in the ocean.

There are tons of structures to climb, slides to go down and all sorts of fun water activities to check out for every age level.

After lunch we are checking out Journey to Madagascar! You can meet one of the aquariums resident lemurs, Annie, Emmy, and Remmington.
The Madagascar tortoise is endangered. Journey to Madagascar looks over the Wetlands trail and the large dome overhead makes it look airy and expansive. It gives the area a nice immersive feel.
We had an absolute blast spending the day exploring The Florida Aquarium. There is still a lot we haven’t yet seen so we will be back. The conservation work that they do makes this an especially great place to support with the family. Aerial of the Florida Aquarium in the Channelside area of Tampa. We have filmed alot of weddings at the Florida Aquarium so therefore had some footage from the Coral Reef Room and the 500,000 gallon tank with Sharks and Manta Rays. The just newly painted the beautiful Manta Ray Statue at the front entrance, so we really featured that in this aerial video. We also flew over the Explore-a-Shore area, which we will be performing a wedding reception in a couple of weeks. Also the Purple, Blue 3rd floor area you see to the right of the main entrance is the new bridal room where brides and grooms can get ready in a room with the view of Channelside. Exhibits:
The Florida Aquarium's exhibits are laid out to show the journey of a drop of water from one of Florida's many fresh-water springs out to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Exhibits include a large simulated wetlands exhibit located under a tall glass atrium, a simulated beach, and a coral reef community housed in a 500,000-US-gallon (1,900,000 l) tank. The newest section is Ocean Commotion, which replaced the Sea Hunt section.
Education:
The mission statement of the Florida Aquarium is to entertain, educate and inspire stewardship of the natural environment.. One way they accomplish this is through their educational programming. Several times a year adults can attend Evening Tide Talks, which are lectures given by renowned scientists, photographers, explorers, and researchers. Complimentary food, beer, and wine are provided for attendees.

Giant monster fish at the Florida Aquarium, Tampa FL
Today we visited the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, FL and saw ducks, snakes, lizards, hissing cockroaches, pelicans, turtles, otters... and oh yeah, FISH!
We also saw one of the largest fish ever, Cletus! A fish that is as tall and heavier than me! (Not just a fish tale!)
They also had a Snow attraction there as this was filmed in December of 2016.

The Florida Aquarium tour with Daisy and Briar Rose take a trip the Florida Aquarium. There are so many awesome sea creatures there! At the touch tank they get to pet sharks, stingrays anemones, and star fish. They saw large sharks, octopus, and big fish. There were even lemurs!

The Florida Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, publicly operated institution located in Tampa, Florida, United States. The facility is home to more than 20,000 aquatic plants and animals from Florida and all over the world. The facility is located in the Channel District of Downtown Tampa. The Florida Aquarium was largely constructed using borrowed money amid inflated projections that high attendance and ticket sales would pay off the incurred debt. However, after the aquarium opened in March 1995, the number of visitors and tourists fell well below expectations.[3]
The aquarium fell into financial debt. In response to the crisis, the city of Tampa took over The Florida Aquarium's mortgage and debt in 1999. Managers at the institution were forced to lay off or demote roughly one-third of the aquarium's total staff.[3]
Though it struggled in its early years, The Florida Aquarium reinvented itself and made entertainment a key aspect of its mission, incorporating fun and exciting ways to instill strong messages about the importance of Florida's natural resources and educating 100,000 school children each year.

Jeff Swanagan became CEO of the Florida Aquarium in 1998 and is credited with turning around the troubled institution. Swanagan loosened the aquarium's previous emphasis on science and Florida wildlife. He introduced several new exhibits featuring flora and fauna from other regions of the world to attract new and returning visitors to the aquarium. New exhibitions overseen by Swanagan included the Dragons Down Under, which features leafy sea dragons that are native to the waters off Australia; an albino alligator; and an exhibit featuring snakes and bats called Frights of the Forest.[3] A sting ray was even nicknamed Roseanne Barb by a marketing department in an attempt to attract attention to the aquarium.
Under Swanagan, The Florida Aquarium was able to return to financial stability. The aquarium was able to pay off approximately 3 million dollars in debt by 2002. He was also able to slash the annual subsidy provided to the aquarium from the city of Tampa from $1.1 million to 700,000 dollars.[3]
The number of visitors to the Florida Aquarium also rose during Swanagan's tenure as CEO. Total yearly attendance rose from 545,000 visitors to a record high of 620,000 in 2002.[3]
Jeff Swanagan departed The Florida Aquarium in 2002 to become the first president of Georgia Aquarium.[3]
Thom Stork became President and CEO following Swanagan's departure for Georgia and continued the financial successes of his predecessor. In 2005, under Stork, The Florida Aquarium added Explore A Shore, a 2-acre outdoor, water adventure play area for children adjacent to the Caribbean Cantina. Average time spent at the aquarium doubled and response to the new water adventure zone was excellent. In the fall of 2008, The Florida Aquarium took one of its four galleries, Sea Hunt, and transformed the subdued gallery into the vibrant and interactive, Ocean Commotion gallery.[4] Ocean Commotion brought high technology into an Aquarium for the first time, using smart wi-fi' that was location aware to transmit additional content and information directly to a guest's smart phone.
In 2011, The Florida Aquarium added large sand tiger sharks to its signature exhibit, the Coral Reef, which holds 500,000 gallons of natural saltwater (delivered by barge 4 times a year) and moved their popular Dive with the Sharks program from Shark Bay to the Coral Reef with the new sand tiger sharks.
Following 11 consecutive years of financial stability and operating in the black, the aquarium plans expansions over several phases for the future.[5] The expansion includes new, state-of-the-art classrooms, changing exhibit space, an off-site rehabilitation and research facility and an exciting event center for hosting conventions, seminars, weddings and other special events.
While The Florida Aquarium is best known as a world-class attraction[6][7][8] in downtown Tampa, Florida, the aquarium is also an established education resource having had its 1-Millionth student in 2011 and a research and conservation facility with current projects on coral propagation, underwater archaeology and sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation.
