Asheville's thriving downtown, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, creates an environment like no other in the world. Asheville, North Carolina's central business district features some of the best restaurants, art galleries, and music venues found anywhere in the world. Since it's revitalization in the mid 1990s, Asheville has quickly made a name for itself with its diverse culture and laid back lifestyle.
“We'd been coming here for decades, and I can't believe how this place has changed,” says Libby de Caetani. “The art that you see here being produced is serious art now, which is hard to find outside of New York and a few other really big cities. There's great theater. When we were making our decision to come here, N.C. Stage had just opened, and we said, ‘Wow.’ And then we've got the Magnetic Theater. I think Asheville stacks up really well.”
Those people who live the urban condominium lifestyle are just a few steps from all Asheville has to offer and short drive to world-class outdoor activities.
“It's a very active lifestyle because you have mountain biking, you have walking, you have kayaking just right outside Asheville's doors,” says Scott Mills.
“We're big day hikers,” says Libby. “Every weekend that it's nice out, we'll find us out on a two-to-four-hour kind of a hike, something just nice.”
“I'm sitting here in my favorite restaurant,” says Scott. “I'm about to have a crepe from Twisted Crepe, and it'll take me about two minutes to walk to 12 South Lexington, which I call home. There's no easier way to live. You get to know your neighbors as you're walking around downtown, you get to know the staff, you get to know the employees and the owners of these businesses, and it really makes you a part of Asheville. You really feel like you've become attached and involved in the city life. And it's amazing.”
Of course, what makes a city great is its people. And anyone who has spent even a short time in Asheville can see why it's been voted the Happiest City in the United States.
“We met this really nice young guy downtown who was traveling around via couchsurfing.com or something like that,” says Libby. “Well educated, neat, young guy. Met him at an outdoor cafe and actually, we older people all invited him over for the evening. Mostly, I think people are open minded. There seems to be room in the inn for everybody here.”
If you feel at home with art and activity at your doorstep, and mountain views off your balcony, then the urban lifestyle may be right for you.

BHTV: Celebrating 100 Years of State & National Parks in WNC:
Welcome to part three of our three-part profile of Asheville city parks. Home to North Carolina's longest running Shakespeare festival and not far from Montford Park where they originally performed, you'll find the beautiful Hazel Robinson Amphitheater. The Montford Park Players were founded in 1973 and have become cultural staple ever since.
“Our mission is to provide and make theater available and affordable for all,” says John Russell, managing director of the Montford Park Players. “We see ourselves as a vital resource for the community because one, we provide a wonderful experience classic theater in a wonderful pastoral outdoor setting. And do it absolutely free. One of the beauties of having a theater in what is a urban park and is hard to believe that we're less than 10 minutes walking distance from downtown less than a mile in this beautiful setting it looks like it's out in the wilderness. Our audience just runs a whole gamut of every demographic, from the very young to the very old— we'll have children sitting on the front row. We'll have families who bring picnics. And of course a favorite beverage, bottle of wine, some beer, and just make an evening out of it. Our show is not a traditional on-the-stage fourth wall, as it's called, type of production. We actually go out and actively play with the audience. Where there are forests of trees, the audience becomes the forest. Where entrances are made from over the hill they actually come in from over the hill. We will make the audience a vital part of our show. We provide a great space for our huge tourism market. And this is really a one of our destination attraction. We have a loyal following from all 50 states several foreign countries as well as our very wide Western North Carolina core audience. The neighborhood buys into this very much. They're very big supporters of ours. We see huge number of people that come in on foot, so we know they're from the neighborhood. We do have a great relationship with the neighborhood. It all goes along with the the concept that urban parks do enhance the value of the community in which they are located.”
Not all real estate is private and not all green spaces are right in our own backyard. Whether lined with municipal building or surrounded by historic homes, the city spaces in our communities are excellent places to gather, participate in, and celebrate our mountain life and culture in an urban way. For more information on these and all of Asheville's city parks, visit their website. For more information about your real estate market, ask your Beverly-Hanks associate or go to Beverly-Hanks.com.

MRI Goggles
Imaging can be very difficult for small children required to be still. The anxiety can sometimes spread to parents, and lead to sedation for the child. As News 13's Jay Siltzer shows us in today's Health Alert, something as simple as a pair of goggles is making the experience better for everyone.Having a puppet simulate getting an MRI can calm some children's fears before the procedure, but these goggles are making magnetic resonance imaging easier than ever at Mission Children's in Asheville. The goggles were paid for by a grant, costing more than $44,000. The reason they're so expensive: No metal components. But, once a child has them on, he or she can watch videos while getting the procedure.Amy Fisher, Mission Child-Life Specialist, we have a lower rate of sedation because of the goggles, e are able to use the goggles to help them hold still instead of doing an IV and sedation medicine.5-year-old cancer survivor Brooklyn Morawietz routinely requires MRIs, the new option makes a big difference.Brittany Morawietz, Brooklyn's mom, she just went right in there, a little bit nervous at first, she laid on the table put on the movie goggles and did amazing.Amy Fisher, all of the unsedated scans with the goggles have been very successful thus far.Brittany Morawietz, she's already talking about coming back next time bringing her own movie and when she hopped up on the table that was so cool.A grant from the Berger Foundation to the Mission Foundation paid for the goggles.Few facilities in the country have them.

In Select Theaters Christmas, Everywhere January 10
Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.
