Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) The Odeon
The Odeon is a small theater that is located behind the Palazzo Corvaja, on the main street of Taormina, the Corso Umberto.
The monument that can be seen in it's well preserved remains today, was built in the times of the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus Octavian, in the second century. It was a stage for musical and literary presentations, which were performed only for the elite of the city. Its discovery in 1892, was followed by a long period of archaeological excavation, during which several buildings that over time were built over the ruin, needed to be torn down.
Architecturally is quite similar to the large Greek-Roman theater , known as the Ancient Theater of Taormina - yet thesmaller Teatro Odeon has a different orientation: The Odeon is directed towards northeast. It was built with clay bricks and is divided into three main parts: the stage, orchestra and audience.
The audience is divided into five different areas, to accommodate about two hundred people, surmounted by a semicircular gallery.
Today, the Odeon, because of its small size, is widely used for various events in the city, for example during the Christmas season it serves as the charming setting for the nativity scene.

Taormina is a hilltop town on the east coast of Sicily. It sits near Mount Etna, an active volcano with trails leading to the summit. The town is known for the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greco-Roman theater still used today. Near the theater, cliffs drop to the sea forming coves with sandy beaches. A narrow stretch of sand connects to Isola Bella, a tiny island and nature reserve.
Taormina is a small city and comune in the Metropolitan City of Messina on the east coast of the island of Sicily, Italy, midway between Messina and Catania. Taormina has been a tourist destination since the 19th century. Its beaches, the most famous being 'Isola Bella' are accessible via an aerial tramway built in 1992 on the Ionian sea and via highways from Messina in the north and Catania in the south.
Just south of Taormina is the Isola Bella, a nature reserve; and further south, situated beside a bay, is the popular seaside resort of Giardini Naxos. Tours of the Capo Sant' Andrea grottos are also available. The village of Taormina is perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian sea. Besides the ancient Greek theatre, it has many old churches, lively bars, fine restaurants, and antique shops. Taormina is approximately a forty-five-minute drive away from Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna.

Taormina, Sicily. Shrines and Churches.
ST. PANCRA’S CHURCH
The church consecrated to the Patron of Taormina, St. Pancras, Bishop and martyr, was built on the ruins of a Greek temple dedicated to Jupiter Serapis. Parts of the temple’s cell can still be seen in the southern wall of the church. This church is in Barocco style and dates back to the second part of the 16th century. Its main portal is very interesting with jambs and architraves in Taormina stone; two Ionian columns decorate each side of the portal. Inside the church the intermediate floor with the organ can be seen above this portal. Two interesting oil paintings on canvas hang above the two minor altars on the right of the church, one picturing the torture of St. Nicone and the other the consecration of St. Maximus who was St. Pancras’ successor. Between the other two minor altars on the left of the church there is a fresco picturing Teofano Cerameo, Taormina’s last Bishop during the 11th century. A low railing in wrought iron separates the rest of the church from the main altar which is lavishly decorated with polichrome marble slabs and an Ionian column on each side, like those on the external portal. There are eight angels on the altar, four on each side, and a bust of God giving his blessing. A fresco picturing the torture of St. Pancras can be seen on the right of the main altar.
ST. CATHERINE’S CHURCH
The exact construction date of this church, consecrated to St. Catherine of Alexandria in Egypt and located in the centre of the town opposite Palazzo Corvaja, is not known. It is thought to date back to 1663, the year engraved on the tablet of the ossuary found outside the church and now located in the wall beside the staircase which leads to the crypt. The entrance door to the sacresty is on the left of the portal; the sacresty is thought to have been built before the Church, i.e. during the 16th century. The facade of the sacresty is decorated with two small windows ornated with sea shells, the same decoration used on the architrave of its door. As it was built on the ruins of the Odeon, the remains of which can be seen behind the church, part of the orchestra and scene were destroyed. The scene of the Odeon is believed to have been created using the colonnade of a pre-existent Greek temple dedicated to Aphrodite.
ST. GEORGE’S CHURCH
St. George’s Anglican Church was built in the early 1920s on the iniziative of a small group of English people who used to spend most of the year in Taormina. The church was designed by Sir Harry Triggs, an English architect and the son-in-law of Sir Edward Hill, who owned the land and was a real promoter of Taormina’s wonders. There are two aisles inside the church, which is divided by three round arches in Siracusa stone with two central columns as their base. The most beautiful part of the church is its large polichrome window behind the main altar picturing Jesus on the cross with St. Catherine on the left and St. George in his mediaeval armour on the right.
ST. AUGUSTINE’S CHURCH
The Church of St. Augustine, nowadays known as the town library, was built towards the end of the 15th century by the people of Taormina and is said to have been originally devoted to St. Sebastian who had worked a miracle and saved the town by keeping the plague away. The Augustinian fathers later arrived in Taormina, took over and enlarged the church, turning it into a monastery; it then lost its St. Sebastian title and was named after St. Augustine. The church, with its tie-beam cieling, has four niches on each side decorated with false Corinthian arches and columns. Originally decorated in late Sicilian Gothic style, the church was radically transformed around the year 1700 when the large ogival arch of the main portal was replaced by an architrave in Taormina stone. All that remains of the originai facade is a small rosette and the top of the ogival arch of the old portal.
SHRINE TO OUR LADY OF THE FORTRESS
Situated on the top of Mount Tauro, the Santuario Madonna della Rocca has perhaps one of the most beautiful and suggestive panoramas in Taormina. The shrine was built in 1640, taking advantage of the rock structure which forms a grotto there, and is still today one of the tourists’ favourite sight-seeing attractions.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Palazzo Corvaja
Palazzo Corvaia (sometimes spelt Palazzo Corvaja) is a medieval palace in Taormina, Sicily, Italy, dating from the 10th century. It was principally built at the end of the 14th century and is named after one of the oldest and most famous families of Taormina which owned it from 1538 to 1945.
On four main floors and constructed around a courtyard, the Moorish Gothic palazzo is crenellated. The principal floor has fenestration of pairs of lancet windows divided by columns. The courtyard walls are decorated by reliefs illustrating The Creation. Today the palazzo is used as an exhibition centre.
Corvaja Palace, which is located in Piazza Badia in Taormina, Sicily at right angles to the church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, was originally built in the 10th century by the Arabs (Saracens) who then ruled Taormina, having conquered the town in 902. The origins of the palazzo incorporate an early Saracen fortress dating from the 10th century, which in turn was constructed on Roman foundations. It was subsequently added to over various periods up until the 15th century. Its main body is an Arabic tower, and it has an inner courtyard where the Arabic influence can be seen in the arched windows and doorways.
A 13th century staircase leads up to the first floor and an ornamental balcony which overlooks the courtyard. In 1410, Corvaja Palace housed the Sicilian Parliament. It was renovated in 1945 by Armando Dillo, and as of 2009 it is the seat for the Azienda Autonoma Soggiorno e Turismo.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Corso Umberto
The Corso Umberto I. is the vibrant main street of Taormina and leads from the Porta Messina across the city to the Porta Catania. The busy street is lined with many souvenir shops, restaurants and boutiques that geared entirely to the tourist crowds in the summer months. The unique atmosphere and the many beautifully restored historic buildings should not be missed during a short city walk.
The main street of Taormina is dedicated to Umberto I of Savoy, king of Italy from 1878 to 1900. The Corso Umberto I was part of the ancient Via Valeria which, crossing the city before falling down towards the sea, was connecting Messina to Catania. Bordered to the north by Porta Messina and to the south from Porta Catania, the Corso shows facilities and buildings belonging to styles from different eras, from the Arabic to the Norman, from the Gothic to the Baroque.
The Greek-Roman monuments have been replaced by new constructions, so the temple of Jupiter Serapis has been replaced by the Church of San Pancrazio and on the remains of the Odeon was built the Church of St. Catherine. The presence of palaces and churches along the Corso and its surroundings have transformed the ancient Via Valeria in today’s historical center, animated by shops and cafes that every day welcome visitors from all over the world.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Cattedrale di Taormina
The first construction of the Duomo or Cathedral of Taormina dates back to the thirteenth century on the ruins of a church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. Then, It was rebuilt in the fifteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth century. The building looks more fortress than religious institution. This impression is accentuated by the construction made entirely with large stone blocks and finished with battlements along the whole perimeter of the building. The facade is adorned with a large rose window made of Siracusa stone of excellent workmanship. Two other rosettes on sides of the east and west of the church.
On the main facade, between two fifteenth-century ogival windows, we find the beautiful main door, which was rebuilt in 1636, by decision of the local administrator of the time, as it is shown on the slab of marble above the door. At each side of the main entrance there are two fluted columns in Corinthian style rising from high bases, and over the lintel there is a broken pediment; above the capitals of columns glimpsed the faces of two angels. Each doorjamb bears eleven carved figures These twenty-two characters represent St. Peter (keys of paradise), St. Paul (the sword of the Faith) King David (cither), the four evangelists in their characteristic symbols: the lion (Saint Mark), the eagle (St John), Taurus ( St Luke) and angel (St Matthew). The identification of other saints and apostles is not always so simple and obvious. At the top of each side of the marble frame there are two blessing bishops with mitre and pastoral. They are Saint Nicholas, the Titular Saint of the church and Saint Pancras, Taormina’s Patron Saint.
The side portals belong to different periods of time: the left is of the fifteenth century and presents a picture of the SS. Peter and Paul with the Blessing Christ in the architrave; the right portal is of the '500. The interior is a Latin cross church with three naves and three apses. The nave is supported by six columns of pink marble of Taormina with the capitals with leaf motif and fish scale. It is thought that these may come from the greek-roman theater of Taormina. The ceiling is characterized by large wooden beams with carved shelves with Arab motifs rendered in Gothic style.
At each side of the main altar are two chapels worthwhile seeing:: on the left, the chapel of the Holy Sacrament, the end of '600, is in the Baroque style; on the right, one of Our Lady of Graces, was instead rebuilt in 1747 reusing the materials of a demolished Gothic chapel of St. Peter’s in Taormina.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Chiesa di Santa Caterina
Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Chiesa di Santa Caterina
The church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria rises adjacent to the Palazzo Corvaja on the central Corso Umberto in the municipality of Taormina . Belonging to the archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. To the religious of the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor at the arrival in Taormina around the middle of the sixteenth century the church of Santa Caterina was granted outside the walls where they built their convent. In 1559, with the consent of the archbishop Pedro Ruiz de Valdevexo, it was put up for sale with the aim of obtaining proceeds and financing the construction of the new temple. The transaction is documented on April 27, 1610.
The church of Santa Caterina intra - moenia was built in the first half of the seventeenth century in Baroque style , built on the ruins of a small Roman theater, the Odeon , partially destroying the orchestra and the scene that consisted of the southern colonnade of a even more primitive Greek temple dedicated to Aphrodite. The church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria was closed for about 40 years in a state of precariousness and was restored and reopened for worship on 25 November 1977.
The front facade is bordered by two corner pilasters in ashlars spread over two levels. The entrance, raised five steps from the street level, is characterized by a central portal in pink marble of Taormina reproducing two Ionic columns on high plinths surmounted by Corinthian capitals . The architrave holds two curved side scrolls , each of them housing a cheering putto in a sitting position.
The intermediate niche of the broken tympanum in the Baroque style houses the statue of the holy owner depicted with the palm branch and the sword with which it grabs the tyrant and tetrarca Massimino Daia . On the left side the inevitable wheel, one of the instruments of martyrdom, the work of Paolo Greco was sculpted in 1705 . The hemisphere of the niche presents the shell decoration symbol of the earthly pilgrimage. The pilasters with external volutes hold up two herms that support the sill of the central window, in turn topped by a triangular tympanum.

Places to see in ( Taormina - Italy ) Chiesa di San Pancrazio
The church of San Pancrazio is a place of worship located along the San Pancrazio climb in the municipality of Taormina , archpriest of Taormina. The Temple of Zeus Serapis is attested by the findings of marble with epigraphs, respectively in 1861 and 1867, the statue of Priestess of Isis, a gold ring of the Priest of the temple of Jupiter Serapis found in 1742 engraving. The main facade of the church facing east incorporates a monumental baroque portal , fruit of the delicate combination of white and pink marble with variegated mottling, a brief theory of four steps in stone of Taormina connects the churchyard with the temple hall.
The protruding structure is delimited by lateral ionic style columns , a couple prospectively advanced and elevated on high plinths , whose Corinthian capitals support an architrave , determined by the intersection of the three corresponding faces, rich in articulated moldings . The central passage is therefore delimited by two oblique niches with central shelves . The corbels house marble sculptures, on the right stands the San Procopio statue in bishop's clothes, iconographically depicted with the heart in the right hand raised, signifying martyrdom suffered by the Saracens on 1 August 902 led byIbrāhīm ibn Ahmed . On the left the statue of another saint in bishop's clothes, probably San Pancrazio or San Massimo his successor on the Tauromenitana chair. The perspective of the simple wall bordered by angular lateral pilasters closes with a triangular pediment that includes a blind oculus , at the top the wrought iron cross decorated with rays at the intersection of the two arms.
On the right side above the sacristy in a backward position rises the bell tower, the middle part is built with squared blocks of Taormina stone. the upper order has four round arches , one on each side with jambs , arches and arched stone keys of Taormina delimited by convex pilasters , which form the open-air openings of the belfry .
On the balcony there is an octagonal lantern with arched openings on alternate facets, in turn surmounted by a small dome with a small lantern surmounted by a stone sphere bearing a wrought iron cross with a wind vane . To the four corners of the cornice of the gallery there is a crenellation with double volute motifs, which recalls the top decoration of the pillars of the wrought iron gate that leads to the sacred area.
