Minnesota Lakes At Risk
Presented by Minnesota Waters and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, this video explores changes to Minnesota's lakes and the impacts of increasing shoreland development on shoreline habitat, water quality, and the enjoyment of lakes for generations to come.
The quality of a lake depends primarily on what happens on the land around the lake and in its watershed. Land use is decided locally, by individuals and local governments, whose land-use choices now will determine the future of Minnesota's lakes. Through conversations with experts, this DVD discusses threats facing our lakes as well as protective strategies for landowners and local government decision-makers that will insure continued enjoyment of Minnesota's lakes.
Healthy lakes are important in many aspects --- our quality of life, recreational enjoyment and the economy of our communities and state. Minnesota's lakes are indeed at risk. We need to act now...before it's too late.
This video shows video of lakes and waterways, shorelines and natural plantings, and maps. It also features interviews with individuals. Link to video transcript:

Casting a Fire Ant Colony with Molten Aluminum (Cast #043)
An incredible metal structure is made by pouring molten aluminum into a fire ant colony. The resulting cast is huge, weighing 17.9 lbs. and reaching a depth of 18 inches.
These are the red imported fire ants (RIFA) which are harmful to the environment and their nests are exterminated by the millions in the United States using poisons, gasoline and fire, and boiling water.
From Wikipedia: Researchers have also been experimenting with extreme temperature change to exterminate RIFAs [red imported fire ants], such as injecting liquid nitrogen or pressurized steam into RIFA nests. Besides using hot steam, pouring boiling water into ant mounds has been found effective in exterminating their nests.

New MARC 11 Train - Start of 2010 Blizzard
New MP 36 engine 11. Early hours of first storm of Blizzard of 2010.
MPXpress is a series of diesel-electric passenger train locomotives designed for commuter rail service. The manufacturer, Motive Power, offers the locomotives with a number of customizable options such as different prime movers and traction motors, head end power (HEP) generated by a separate engine or by the prime mover, and new or refurbished trucks. To date, MPI has offered three main variants: MP36PH-3S, MP36PH-3C, and MP40PH-3C.
The MPXpress line of locomotives were the first production passenger locomotives to meet EPA Tier 1 emissions regulations, as well as FRA safety regulations regarding crash-worthiness and fire safety. The line also meets APTA crash-worthiness standards.
Numerous public transit agencies in Canada and the United States have ordered MPXpress locomotives for their commuter rail services.
The MP36PH-3S uses a 16-cylinder MPI 645F3B diesel engine as its prime mover. Its HEP is generated from a static inverter that receives its power through connections to the prime mover. When providing full electrical power to the passenger cars connected to it, the prime mover must maintain a higher RPM in order to supply power to the passenger cars. The traction power when providing full HEP load of 500Kw is 2930 HP, since HEP generation diverts some power from the prime mover.
Chicago's Metra has ordered 27 of these locomotives, which were built and delivered from 2003 through 2004. 14 were to replace Metra's aged F40C fleet; the rest were for expansion. When the locomotives were first delivered, they exhibited software and computer problems, to the point that Metra had to put two F40Cs back into service for a short time in 2004. One of the unique features of the MP36s in Metra's fleet compared to other operators is that they are equipped with a Gyralite (which is standard equipment on all of Metra's passenger locomotives), which are mounted in the spot where the train number board would be located on the front of the locomotive.
[edit] MP36PH-3C
The MP36PH-3C has the same prime mover as the -3S model, the MPI 645F3B diesel engine, but with its HEP generated by a separate Caterpillar diesel engine, thus the C in its model name. In this arrangement, when providing HEP, the full 3600 HP from the prime mover is available for traction, and the prime mover is allowed to idle at a lower RPM. Caltrain was the first to purchase the MP36PH-3C in 2003.
The MP36PH-3C is currently the top-selling commuter locomotive in North America.
[edit] MP40PH-3C
The MP40PH-3C is similar to the MP36PH-3C, but with several differences:
the MP40PH-3C uses a 16-cylinder EMD 710GB series diesel engine instead of the MPI 645F3B, generating 4000HP instead of 3600.
the use of EMD's EM2000 computer and associated control system instead of Wabtec/MPI's own system in the MP36.
the use of an EMD alternator and traction motors.
GO Transit ordered 27 locomotives of this model, which were delivered throughout 2008. An order for 20 additional units was signed in July 2008.
