How to Display a Large US Flag
Field Flag Display Notes
This field flag shown is a 20 by 38 foot flag. You can purchase Large Field Flags (3 sizes) at thestore.gameops.com. Notes pertain to this size flag. You can adjust for larger or smaller flags accordingly.
US Flag Code Notes: (
- The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
- When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. Typically in sports this display is based off the center of the stadium (for example in baseball) or facing the hard camera (is displayed on a video board or for TV).
-The Flag Code states the flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free..however in a respectful display for anthems this use widely accepted. Many slightly wave the flag to give the appearance of it flying.
When unfurled you should have between 24 and 32 people surrounding the flag, about 7 on the long sides and 5 on the shorter sides. Adjust accordingly for your staff and flag.
For best results practice several times using the same staff you use on game nights.
Flag can be carried on the court by 7-10 people. It should be bunched up longwise with the long side ends easy to find.
Once in place, staff for the two longer side stand on either side of the flag. Staff for the shorter sides should be on either end, ready to grab the flag as it is unfurled.
For best results one end of the flag should be stationary, with one side moving away from the original line. As the flag is opened completely the shorter side staff fills in and hold the flag. Holding the flag around shoulder height allows for a full view of the flag, a comfortable position for the holders and prevents the flag from touching the ground.
Following the anthem and presentation of the colors, the flag can be gathered again, reversing the process above. The two sides can both gather the flag. It is recommended to lift the flag when gathering so you can see that the flag doesn't droop.
Once gathered the long narrow flag can be taken off the court and stored in a proper manner.
See the flag code for details for addition details and flag etiquette. While the flag code could be interpreted this style of display to be improper, most military personnel approve of this display for sporting events when carried out in a respectful manner.

JAX Chamber and Community First Credit Union Announce Community First Saturdays in Downtown Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Aug. 21, 2012) -- The JAX Chamber and Community First Credit Union of Florida announce Community First Saturdays in Downtown Jacksonville, a new monthly event held along the Downtown Riverwalk directly behind the Times-Union Center for Performing Arts.
The event, which launches Saturday, Oct. 6, will feature family-friendly activities while showcasing vibrant Downtown Jacksonville. Guests will enjoy the beautiful and accessible St. Johns River and participate in activities with an overall emphasis on health and wellness.
I applaud Community First Credit Union and the JAX Chamber for this new partnership to strengthen the heartbeat of our Downtown, said Mayor Alvin Brown. Community First Saturdays is an opportunity to reacquaint all of Jacksonville with the charm of the city center while also introducing Downtown to new friends and families from all around the region. We are stronger together, and what we're seeing is a positive step shared by many community leaders to build a stronger core to benefit our entire city.
Held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month, October through June, the event offers yoga, tai chi and other fitness classes along the river. Community First Saturdays also provides bike tours, eco-tours on the St. Johns River and self-guided tours of Downtown attractions. While there is ample free parking Downtown, participants are encouraged to visit the event by boat, bike, board and Riverwalk. Food vendors, including some of Jacksonville's popular food trucks and local restaurants, will offer a variety of cuisine and the Finish Line Bar will serve craft beer and wine with café seating along the river.
At Community First, we strive to improve the quality of life where we live, work and play, and we are excited to partner with the Chamber on an event that promotes both Downtown and a healthy lifestyle, said John Hirabayashi, president and CEO of Community First Credit Union. To demonstrate our support for its success, we have signed a three-year commitment as the title sponsor for Community First Saturdays.
While the event will feature plenty of activities and entertainment each month, the goal is also to create synergy between other Downtown events and venues. The JTA Skyway will provide service on Community First Saturdays to encourage people to visit nearby venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the Museum of Science and History (MOSH) and the Jacksonville Public Library. The water taxi will also provide transportation around Downtown, including stops at the Riverside Arts Market and Jacksonville Landing.
The development of Community First Saturdays was spearheaded by Tony Allegretti, who was recently hired by the JAX Chamber as Director of Downtown Engagement, a new position created specifically to enhance the urban core and engage members in Downtown activities.
Developing Downtown Jacksonville is essential for the Jacksonville region's future success and a top priority for the Chamber, said Wally Lee, president of the JAX Chamber. We are thrilled with the progress Tony has made and look forward to even more good things to come in Downtown.

Founded in 2002 by clarinetist and Artistic Director Terrance Patterson, the Ritz Chamber Players present a landmark subscription series at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts in Jacksonville, Florida combining exceptional artistry on stage with inspiring educational programs in schools and throughout the community. Through its concert series in Jacksonville and performances across the United States, the Ritz Chamber Players continue to build the participation of multicultural audiences that reflect our diverse society.
