Mt. Simien - Ethiopia
I spent 8 beautiful days trekking with 9 awesome friends, ascending from Debark side, sumitting Ras Dashen (Ethiopia's highest peak) then descending from Addi Arkay's side.
This mountain is a magical place full of wildlife and beautiful scenery.
Highly recommended.
Hiking in Ethiopia - Wenchi Crater
You have now reached the Arctic Traveller’s corner of the internet. I am currently based in Ethiopia, so a lot of my content will be from this part of the globe, though I will share my other adventures as well. This instalment is filmed in and around Wenchi Crater, an absolute amazing hike. Our trek was about 21k long and took about 6 hours (breaks included). We stayed at Negash Resort, about an hour drive from the crater itself.

SIMIEN MOUNTAINS – Trek to “The Roof Of Ethiopia”
SIMIEN MOUNTAINS – Trek to “The Roof Of Ethiopia”
Hiking in Simien Mountains was last part of my 1 month long Expedition to Ethiopia. Hiking in attitude almost 4,000 meters just 2 days after I left hell in Danakil Depression in attitude some –150 meters (below sea level) and temperatures above 40 C was demanding - least to say. After overwhelming heat in Danakil Depression all of the sudden here in the mountains temperatures were down to –8 C during the night. For me it was just very pleasant surprise. But the trip was not about temperatures or attitude but about views – and I mean VIEWS!!!
Reputation of Simien Mountains as highest mountains in Ethiopia and possibly one of the highest in Africa, together with pictures of “smashing views” took my full attention in early stages of Ethiopian Trip preparation. Yes Views are amazing – as you can see in presentation but you have to deserve them. It took 2 days hike to come edge of the high point of Imet Gogo where everything around in sight (in distance of some 80-100 km) looked like view from a airplane since cliffs we were standing on were towering some 1,800 meters above surrounding landscape.
Basically no matter how you look at them, Simien Mountains will leave you speechless. Comprising one of the Africa’s principal mountain massifs, the Simiens Mountains are made up of several plateaus, separated by broad river valleys. The whole Landscape is incredibly dramatic. It was formed by countless volcanic eruptions some 40 million years ago; layer upon layer of molten lava was poured until it reached a thickness of 3,000 meters!
I started my trip 1 month earlier on another volcanic mountain massif of Bale Mountains which dominate South-East side of East African Rift, then I’ve spent 2 weeks traveling through Afar Triangle Desert of East African Rift to see Erta Ale and Dallol volcanoes of Danakil Depression and finished my trip in this magnificent mountain massif of North-West side of East African Rift.
Simply to say – Simien Mountains concluded one month long Expedition to Ethiopia which I will never forget as my most exciting trip of my life.
Cheers
Jiri
SOF OMAR CAVES - Bale Mountains, Ethiopia
SOF OMAR CAVES – Bale Mountains, Ethiopia
Sof Omar Caves was one of the first “attractions” I visited during my expedition to Ethiopia. Labyrinth of caves is stretching some more than 15 km but only first couple of hundred meter are accessible to public.
Sof Omar Cave is the longest cave system in Ethiopia at 15.1 kilometres (9.4 mi) long; sources claim it is the longest system of caves in Africa. It is situated to the east of Robe, in the Bale Zone of the Oromia Region in south-eastern Ethiopia, through which the Weyib River (Gestro River) flows.
Approaching from Goro, at Sof Omar the scrubby bush steeply drops 90 m into a canyon. The Web river makes its way from the 4,300 metres (14,100 ft.) high Bale Mountains through a 150 kilometres (93 mi) wide outcrop of Anatole limestone to the cave. The cave is formed along a network of joints: one set runs approximately north to south and the other east to west. This zig-zag of passages runs in an approximately south-easterly direction.
Sof Omar has 42 entrances, but generally only four are useful for gaining entrance.
Enjoy

Semien Mountains:
The Semien Mountains, in northern Ethiopia, north east of Gondar, are part of the Ethiopian Highlands. They are a World Heritage Site and include the Semien Mountains National Park. The mountains consist of plateaux separated by valleys and rising to pinnacles. The tallest peak is Ras Dashen (4,550 m); other notable heights include Mounts Biuat (4,437 m) and Kidis Yared (4,453 m).
Because of their geological origins the mountains are almost unique, with only South Africa's Drakensberg having been formed in the same manner and thus appearing similar. Notable animals in the mountains include the walia ibex, gelada, and caracal. There are a few Ethiopian wolves.
Although the word Semien means north in Amharic, according to Richard Pankhurst the ancestral form of the word actually meant south in Ge'ez, because the mountains lay to the south of Aksum, which was at the time the center of Ethiopian civilization. But as over the following centuries the center of Ethiopian civilization itself moved to the south, these mountains came to be thought of as lying to the north, and the meaning of the word likewise changed.
The Semiens are remarkable as being one of the few spots in Africa where snow regularly falls. First mentioned in the Monumentum Adulitanum of the 4th century AD (which described them as inaccessible mountains covered with snow and where soldiers walked up to their knees in snow), the presence of snow was undeniably witnessed by the 17th century Jesuit priest Jerónimo Lobo.[3] Although the later traveler James Bruce claims that he had never witnessed snow in the Semien Mountains, the 19th century explorer Henry Salt not only recorded that he saw snow there (on 9 April 1814), but explained the reason for Bruce's failure to see snow in these mountains – Bruce had ventured no further than the foothills into the Semiens.

Despite their ruggedness and altitude, the mountains are dotted with villages linked by tracks. Historically they were inhabited by Ethiopian Jews (the Beta Israel), who after repeated attacks by the zealous Christian Emperors in the 15th century withdrew from the province of Dembiya into the more defensible Semien mountains.Towards the end of the Zemene Mesafint, Dejazmach Wube Haile Mariam maintained his arsenal and treasury on Mount Hai.Wikipedia
