Asheville Brewery Expanding, Creating Jobs
BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- A popular Asheville brewery is creating jobs with a big expansion.
Wicked Weed broke ground on a new brewing facility in the Enka Commerce Park.
The existing building will be turned into a state of the art brew house that will brew 50,000 barrels a year, bringing about 85 new jobs. They say expanding will help them meet the growing demand.
We had such a great couple of years downtown at the pub. We really hit that point where we couldn't make any more beer and people still wanted our beer, Head Blender Walt Dickinson said.
The next logical step was well, we're going to need a bigger building that we can make beers like Freak of Nature, Double IPA, Tyranny, he says.
Wicked Weed bought the building from Buncombe County.
Commission chairman David Gantt says Wicked Weed is an investment in a big business that will trickle down to help many others.
They're buying a county building from us at fair market value so it's a win for the taxpayer, it's a win for Buncombe County, and it's a win for the Western North Carolina area, he says.
The county provided a $75,000 incentive to help with the expansion. Wicked Weed is making a $5 million initial investment with more expected as production ramps up. And then there's job creation. Dickinson says the facility will eventually employ about 85 people, 40 to be hired in the next few months.
That will be packaging, that will be warehouse. We're going to be hiring some more sales guys and delivery guys for the sales team, he says.
For one of the founding family members, this is all exciting.
This is just the next step. We can share our beer with more people, Denise Guthy said.
We're going to make the most beer per capita, or per city of anywhere in the United States, maybe anywhere in the world, Dickinson said.
Brewing equipment will be installed in June, with distribution of several beers expected by this Fall.

Government Shutdown Delays Brewery
A local brewery says the government shutdown is preventing them from opening their business. Twin Leaf Brewery is Asheville's newest craft brewery. They say they can't begin brewing until they receive a permit from the ATF. All beer permit processing has been put on hold until the shutdown is lifted. Steph Weber and her husband say they hope to open by Twin Leaf by February but are unsure of the future until lawmakers in Washington can agree.

Wounded Veterans Riding Cross Country Make Pit%2
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Riding cross country has become therapy for some veterans wounded while serving.
On Tuesday, about 20 road warriors, including nine wounded veterans, made a pit stop in Asheville along their 2,000 mile long journey.
It's the Road Warrior Foundation's second annual long ride. This is an 8-day trip that started in Canada and will end in Florida on Friday.
The purpose of the ride is to raise awareness and money for this foundation and cause.
We're just trying to give them positive experiences because they've been through quite a bit, Steve Berger, a founder of the Road Warrior Foundation, said.
Each veteran involved has a different story that has led them here for what these men and women call adventure therapy.
Wounded in Afghanistan May 19, 2010, Bobby Withers, a wounded veteran from North Carolina, said. Stepped on a land mine during a fire fight with suicide bombers in American uniforms.
The Blue Ridge Parkway was on that mapped out trip which is guided and funded all by the Road Warrior Foundation.
I would recommended it to anyone who wants an adventure and has 10 days to themselves, Chuy Vasquez, another disabled veteran from North Carolina, said.
We've come roughly 1,400 miles starting in Quebec and will end up in Key West, Florida, Withers said.
This trip enables them to accomplish many things just by hitting the highway.
It's a sense of adventure and camaraderie, Withers said. This provides both in a safe and fun environment.
This makes it a lot easier to show the public that we're hurt and we're injured, but it doesn't change who we are, so foundations like this make it a lot easier, Vasquez said.
While in Asheville for the night, they had a fundraiser at Twin Leaf Brewery.
By the end of the trip, they will have traveled about 2,400 miles. To fund these trips, they need donations.
Visit the Road Warrior Foundation to find out how you can help.

Pollination Celebration
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Asheville is buzzing with events for Pollination Celebration.
The goal of the celebration is to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, like bees.
Local beekeepers say they are losing about a 40-percent of their hives, year-to-year.
They say inappropriate pesticide use, loss of natural habitat and parasites are some of the largest contributing factors.
Kim Allen, Asheville bee charmer, when all that comes together, you get somewhat of an explanation for colony collapse disorder, and what's really happening is quite alarming.
Monday from 5pm until 7:30pm, you can stop by the downtown Asheville Bee Charmer store to sample honey from around the world. The $10 fee benefits Bee City USA.

SoCon Excitement
The SoCon Basketball Tournament is underway at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Asheville.
Appalachian State took on Samford in the first game of three games. This year's tournament is expected to have a huge economic impact on the city. The Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commissions says it's expected to generate at least $4 million. Hotels are booked and restaurants are expecting big crowds. The games are also serving as a learning tool for local students.
There will be a pep rally held at Vance Monument Saturday morning. A free shirt and basketball will be handed out to kids in the crowd. They can also be a part of the parade that will start at the Vance Monument and finish at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Airstream camping in the NC mountains for Ben's birthday!
Every Fall we've wanted to take a trip north to Asheville to see the leaves change color and get some hiking in, but every year we've held back because it can get so expensive with accommodations and dining, etc.
Now with the Airstream it's SO EASY to hit the road! The campground was only $5 per night and right next to a chilly and abundant creek - Curtis Creek. We boondocked and used our solar panel, and it went GREAT! This was the first time we've camped in the Airstream off-grid, and it was sooooo freeing.
Even though the weather was pretty warm during Ben's birthday weekend, we had a great (sweaty) time hiking a few trails near our campground (Curtis Creek Campground), and then we drove into Asheville on Ben's birthday to check out some local breweries.
We can't wait to go back to Asheville and stay a little longer - there's so much to do in that area! Also, we've decided that weekend trips with the Airstream are not enough. By the time we hook it up, drive a few hours, and unhook it and get settled, it feels like we don't have much time to relax before we have to pack up and do it all over again in the next couple days.
2019 will involve much longer camping trips :)
