[Travel Vlog #05] ITALY: FROM TUSCANY TO THE CINQUE TERRE || Julien Lim
This is my one week trip with my very good friend Julien the Blond Guy in ITALY !!!!!!
We've been through Tuscany to the Cinque Terre. We landed in Bologna. We went to the very typical village of Arezzo and its architecture. After, we discovered the beautiful village of Montepulciano in the middle of Tuscany with its awesome landscapes. The Pisa tower was an amazing spot to shoot some cool stuffs later. And finally, we arrived at La Spezia on the coast, and we spent the rest of the trip to admire the colorful Cinque Terre.
Enjoy !!!

It could be a painting by Picasso—five picturesque fishing villages perched on Mediterranean hillsides, splendidly brushed in sun-washed colors. Medieval fortresses and ripe, plentiful vineyards contrast with harbors filled with gleaming yachts. This enticing vision exists on the Italian Riviera between Genoa and La Spezia. Cinque Terre: BEST place in ITALY for NATURE LOVERS - Travel Vlog #Day 129
The Cinque Terre is a National Park made up of 5 different coastal villages - Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. We stayed in La Spezia (much cheaper!) at an amazing hotel (watch the video in our Italy playlist!) and got a 7 minute train ride to the first village, Riomaggiore.
DAY 129 // November 7, 2017 // Cinque Terre, Italy
There are day train passes available which would be great if you are returning to the same location. We also see Vernazza & Monterosso and then go onto Genoa.
Oh, and I know I totally butcher most names in this video! haha!
You can also walk between all 5 villages (if the weather conditions allow it). It would be like a 5 hour walk -someday we would LOVE to go back. This was one of our FAVORITE places so far on this 1 year trip!

Cinque Terre - timelapse from Italy (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore)
Cinque Terre which means Five lands is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera between Genoa and La Spezia. The area is part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cinque Terre is a very popular tourist destination and comprises of five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. These unique villages hide between green, steep hills and the turquoise Ligurian sea. The villages pastel-coloured houses are built on top of rocks in the rugged, steep landscape. Cinque Terre is located in the coastal region Liguria which is popular with tourists for its beaches, towns and cuisine. Travel between the five villages can be done either by train, by boat or by hiking the beautiful trails that connect the villages.
Monterosso is the first village we meet on our journey through Cinque Terre. This is in my opinion the least exciting of the five villages. Monterosso has several hotels and a long beach with deck-chairs and umbrellas. The center of Monterosso has a nice atmosphere with pastel-coloured houses, artisan shops and many small streets.
Vernazza is simply breathtaking and very popular among tourists. Vernazza was original the only village with a natural harbour so ships departed from here and as a result, Vernazza became the most prosperous village. The first records about Vernazza goes all the way back to 1080. On 25 October 2011, Vernazza was struck by massive flooding, and mudslides that left the town buried in over 4 metres of mud, causing over 100 million euro worth of damage. Today the main source of revenue for Vernazza is tourism. However, as a testimony to the strength of centuries-old tradition, fishing, wine and olive oil production still continue.
Corniglia is the smallest and least crowded of the Cinque Terre villages. The population of the village is about 150. It is located 100 meters above sea level and thus not so easily accessesble from it's train station as the other villages and it doesn't have a harbour, so boats don't stop here. The walk from the train station to the village include climbing the Lardarina stairway with 382 steps. But there is also an easy option: the local electronic buses. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and is surrounded on three sides by terraces and vineyards, the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. The history of the village goes back to Roman times. According to the legend, Corniglia was founded by a wine producer, who named the village after his mother, Cornelia.
Manarola – along with Vernazza – is registered among the most beautiful small villages of Italy. Most of the houses are pastel-coloured and many are built on top of the rugged coast. Colours and lights are best here in the evening hours, before sunset. Manarola's primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The village is famous for it's sweet Sciacchetrà wine.
Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the Cinque Terre and is known for it's historic character and its wine. The village was built in the valley of the Rivus Maior (river), hence the name. The river is now running under the main street. The main street and the railway station are connected by a long pedestrian tunnel with beautiful mosaics. Riomaggiore is like a labyrinth of alleys and steps. The houses are built close to one another, so not much sun enters the back alleys and they are thus nice and cool during the hot summer months. Riomaggiore is divided into two by the railway line. The area by the sea with the colourful little boats (gozzi), small seafood restaurants, rocky beach and where tourists enjoy the mediterranean sun. The upper part is the agricultural village (borgo dei contadini) surrounded by terraces.

Manarola & Riomaggiore Cinque Terre In May
???????? COCKTAILS AT NESSUN DORMA + SUN SETTTING OVER CINQUE TERRE ????????
We traveled to northern Italy for 4 nights between May 26th - 30th 2018. We booked an apartment in La Spezia as our base, called 'La Dame' - very quirky, clean and had absolutely everything we needed, well worth looking up especially as it was minutes away from the train station too. We flew into Pisa and caught a taxi that took us to the leaning tower. We had a wonder around then walked 20 minutes back to the train station to board a train to La Spezia (it took an hour). We had a chilled evening, drank lots of Prosecco and went in search of a few bars. On our first full day in Italy, we decided to visit the 5 UNESCO world heritage villages collectively called 'Cinque Terre' or 5Terre. We were anticipating huge crowds of people visiting Cinque Terre so planned a bit ahead.
We decided to get up early and visit Vernazza first as this village seemed to be the most popular one to visit. We bought a Cinque Terre day pass which entitled us to hop on and off the train going between these villages all throughout the day and it cost us around 15.60 Euros.
In this vlog -
We arrived at Manarola early evening, and wondered around the village until we found the harbour and a path leading up to Nessun Dorma Bar / restaurant. The walk around the cliffs edge is beautiful, with amazing views looking over at the stacked colourful houses clinging to the cliffs of Manarola. There were lots of people on the path and at the top where the bar is situated although it never felt crowded. There was a que to have a seat at Nessun Dorma and we waited around 30 minutes before being seated right near the edge with perfect views...well worth the wait!! Before we were seated, i went on a wonder around and found a really pretty spot looking back on the previous villages we visited, the sun was setting, it was beautiful. We then went on a search for another restaurant for an evening meal, Nessun Dorma just sells snack / cicchetti which was nice but we fancied a meal. While the others were looking at restaurant menus, Emily and I walked over to the breakwater to see if we could get a view looking back at Manarola however, the rocks were quite large and a bit dangerous to walk on especially as i was wearing sandles!! But from here we could see the lights of the other villages in the distance which was lovely. After our meal, we decided to go back to our apartment in La Spezia, it was around 10.30pm and we felt it was too late to visit the last Cinque Terre village: Riomaggiore. I was really sad about this however, Emily and I did stop off at this village a few nights later on our way back from Portofino. We only had 35 minutes before our train back to La Spezia so we raced around trying to take in as much a physically possible. It is so different to the other villages, we loved it and it had quite a cool vibe to it with lots of people sitting in bars on the streets and groups of younger people chilling out laughing...it felt it had lots of character.
I absolutely loved seeing all the Cinque Terre villages but doing it in a day was hard going in that to truly immerse yourself in your surroundings and to get a real feel for the different villages, you need more time really. I appreciate what we saw and our time there however, i really cant wait to go back again one day and stay and visit these villages over a few days.
Now onto Santa Margherita Ligure...
Our Trip and what my vlogs will entail:
Day 1 - Arrive in Pisa - train to La Spezia to our first accomodation
Day 2 - Visit the Cinque Terre villages using a Cinque Terre train day pass
Day 3 - Train up the coast to Santa Margherita Ligure for one night and spend time wondering around the harbour town
Day 4 - Spend the day in Portofino by catching a bus on the way and a boat return to Santa Margherita. Travel back to La Spezia for out final evening.

Cinque Terre: Exploring Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, & Riomaggiore, Italy
Walking in the tiny streets of the Cinque Terre towns. Exploring the windy villages of Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, & Rimaggiore.
TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
*Each town is tiny so it doesn't take that long to explore
*Each town has impressive viewpoints
*Video is made to be paired with the Monterosso video:
*Also to go with the hiking Cinque Terre Highlight Video:
*Vernazza has one main street with shops and restaurants
*Corniglia offered the most exploring with windy, narrow streets with many shopping opportunities and great, high views of the ocean.
*Manarola and Riomaggiore are very hilly and they both have one main street with several shops and restaurants.
*Riomaggiore has some newer paths that overlook the city, just walk up as high as you can and explore!
*Overall, although Monterosso al Mare is not as photographic as the other towns, but Monterosso was our favorite town to explore as it was also the largest and the flattest, plus it was the only one with a an accessible beach.

CORTONA, ITALY - travel shorts
Cortona, Italy is one of the most famous the Tuscan hill towns although it's important to realise that Cortona is more of a Tuscany hillside town than hilltop town and consequently has a great many steep streets and lanes and only one horizontal one - by no means unique in this part of Italy. Nevertheless, for anyone visiting central Italy, the sights of Cortona are definitely worth a day at the very least, preferably two days. The Cortona Museums house world-class art, ranging from Etruscan and Egyptian in the Cortona Etruscan Museum, through early Renaissance in the Cortona Diocesan Museum. Cortona is well-endowed with a variety of Renaissance architecture even though the prevalent character of the townscape is mediaeval. The main piazza of Cortona, Italy, Piazza della Repubblica, has a wonderful ambience and forms the focal centre of Cortona. The highest point on the hill of Cortona is dominated by a huge Medicean fort from which the visitor can admire not only the town but the entire Val di Chiana.
Cortona has an active calendar of performing arts events, and hosts a famous annual antiques exhibition, the Cortonantiquaria, as well as a monthly antiques and bric-a-brac market. There is also a not-to-be-missed folkloric crossbow competition, the Giostra dell'Archidado on the last last day of Cortona Mediaeval Week in late May or early June.
Cortona is easily accessed by rail from Rome and Florence but the nearest station is Camucia-Cortona, three km away, requiring a bus or taxi ride to reach the centre of Cortona. Walking uphill to Cortona proper is for the fit only but one is rewarded by access to a number of Etruscan tombs along the route.
