Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley) (UNESCO/NHK)
Wadi Al-Hitan, Whale Valley, in the Western Desert of Egypt, contains invaluable fossil remains of the earliest, and now extinct, suborder of whales, Archaeoceti. These fossils represent one of the major stories of evolution: the emergence of the whale as an ocean-going mammal from a previous life as a land-based animal. This is the most important site in the world for the demonstration of this stage of evolution. It portrays vividly the ...

Walking Through Medieval Al Qasr Dakhla Oasis, Egypt
We continued walking through this deserted but still fascinating old city. Wandering from place to place to look at olive oil presses, a still stately Medresa, and even buying a scarf made by a local. (There's always a time and place to shop, isn't there?)

Giza Pyramids, Saqqara, Dahshur, Qarun, Whales Valley, Birqash Camel Market - By Carmine Salituro
Egypt's ecolodges
From Siwa to Fayoum, Minya, Dakhla and Marsa Alam, the beautiful and remote surroundings of Egypt's ecolodges are offering an alternative to the mass tourism market. But times are hard for these business owners, whose small enterprises are very vulnerable to the drop in tourism and volatile security situation.

Camping in El Rayan Valley 2 (Beside El Modawara Mountain)
Located less than two hours away from Cairo, Wadi El Rayan is one of Egypt's most famous nature reserves. Named after King El Rayan Ibn El Walid who had lived in the area with his army, the nature reserve is part of El Fayoum governnate and located 40km away from El Fayoum itself.
The Wadi El Rayan reserve consists of seven parts; the (loosely translated) upper and lower oases, El Rayan Oasis, El Rayan Falls, El Modawara Mountain (or Jabal El Modawara in Arabic), El Rayan Mountain (Jabal El Rayan) and Wadi El Hitan (The Valley of the Whales). All these areas are full of amazing landscapes such as oases, mountains, rock formations and waterfalls.
Egyptian wildlife can also be seen in the area including white gazelles, Egyptian gazelles, sand foxes and fennec foxes, as well as rare species of resident birds, migrant birds and various kinds of eagles and falcons.
The area is also a major attraction to archaeologists due to the volume of marine fossils and archaeological remains found in there. Wadi El Hitan is named after the pre-historic whale fossils discovered in the area, which are considered to be the earliest whale fossils ever found and earned the valley its position on the UNESCO list of protected World Heritage sites.
El Rayan's waterfalls are about 20km away from the reserve's gate on the left side of the road (of which nearly two kilometres are unpaved). The waterfalls are beautiful but the unfortunate lack of attention by authorities makes them look worn out; not the best sight for a tourist. We recommend not spending much time here and investing your time instead in the fascinating protectorate.
Only five kilometres away, Jabal El Modawara is the definition of beauty. When you climb this amazing mountain-- which isn't too bad to climb by the way-- the view from above will easily take your breath away. It's also a great spot for bird-watching, especially if you plan on catching a glimpse of eagles or falcons.
Venturing further past Jabal El Modawara, adventurers may take a right and drive east for 30km on a dirt road to Wadi El Hitan.

#6 The Great Temple of Abydos
This is one of the oldest cities of Ancient Egypt, dating to around 2900 BC. Considered a sacred city due to its necropolis where early pharaohs were entombed, Abydos is regarded as one of Egypt’s most important archaeological sites. The Great Temple of Abydos (also known as the Temple of Seti the First), still remains in remarkable shape. And it’s become known for some unusual hieroglyphics that are carved over an arch there. According to some interpretations, the hieroglyphics represent objects that look remarkably like modern day helicopters, submarines, battle tanks, and even fighter aircraft! Egyptologists say that the images are the result of the carved stone being used over and over throughout the ages. But other sources claim to see depictions of modern technology in the ancient hieroglyphics. Are they seeing things?
#5 Spinosaurus
The first specimens of this enormous theropod were unearthed and described in 1912 at the Bahariya (bah-HA-ree-uh) Formation in the Western Desert of Egypt. Its genus and species were assigned 3 years later. Even from the start, the animal has been listed as one of the longest and largest of theropod dinosaurs, with estimated measurements of 49 feet (15 m). But estimates of its weight have varied widely over the years, with numbers ranging from 13,000 to 46,000 pounds! (5,900 kg to 20,865 kg) Did you know there’s evidence that suggests this beast may have been semiaquatic, not unlike modern day crocodilians? A study published in 2014 claimed that this animal could even swim!
#4 Wadi El Hitan
While the remains of Spinosaurus were discovered in the Bahariya Formation, there’s another site in Egypt that has yielded a treasure trove of fossils. Located about 150 km from Cairo, Wadi El Hitan is also known as “Whale Valley”. That’s a reference to hundreds of fossils that represent the earliest forms of whale. No other place in the world contains such fossils in the same amount or quality as this area. Fossils of Basilosaurus, sea cows, sharks, and primitive elephants have also turned up here. But the most unusual artifact is a 21-meter long whale skeleton with hind legs, feet and toes, something that was previously unseen. Experts say it could help solve the mystery of how whales evolved from land-based animals to ocean-going mammals.
#3 Bent Pyramid, Smooth Pyramid
Archaeologists have found the remains of a mysterious pyramidal structure that dates back around 3,700 years and may indicate the ancient Egyptians’ first ever attempt at building a smooth pyramid. It was found about 20 miles (32 km) south of Cairo, in the royal necropolis of Dahshur ). Excavations are still in their early stages, so the exact size of the pyramid has not yet been established. Blocks of stone and the start of a corridor have been found, still in good condition … as was a block that was engraved with 10 lines of vertical hieroglyphics. Did you know the earliest Egyptian pyramids were step pyramids? One of the first of the intentionally designed ‘smooth’-sided pyramids that we’re more familiar with is thought to have started with the so-called ‘bent pyramid’ of King Sneferu (SNEF-roo). Experts think Its unusual appearance is due to a miscalculation that occurred during its construction.
#2 The Rosetta Stone
In a way, we have Napoleon to thank for the discovery of this legendary artifact in 1799. The huge slab of igneous rock was discovered by one of the French emperor’s soldiers at a fort during his campaign in Egypt. Since the fort was located near the town of Rosetta, that name was applied to the stone. Dated to 196 BC, it was instrumental in helping to decipher hieroglyphics and led to a better understanding of Ancient Egyptian culture. British forces would later capture the Rosetta Stone and turn it over to London’s British Museum where it remains today.
