Veterans Memorial Park - Las Cruces NM
VFW Silver State Post 3396 visited the Veterans Memorial Park located in Las Cruces New Mexico. The Veterans Memorial Park was dedicated on May 5, 1999. The park was built as a cooperative effort by the City of Las Cruces and the Las Cruces Home Builders Association in conjunction with the Veterans Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
Along with the Veterans Memorial Wall, Veterans Memorial Park is host to The Bataan Death March Memorial which was dedicated on April 13, 2002. The park also has a memorial-walking trail with three memorials at this time, The Korean War, Marine Corps League, and the Disabled American Veterans. In the works are three other memorials the WWII, China Burma India War and the Special Forces, with more to come. These monuments are strategically located along the memorial walking path, which allows visitors to experience the beauty of the entire park. The path ends at the Gazebo where medallions representing various military service organizations are proudly displayed.

Las Cruces NM Womens Veterans Memorial video
My name is Karen Woods, retire navy chief, a board member of the United Military Women of the SouthWest. Our current project is to build a Women Veterans Monument to be placed in the Las Cruces, New Mexico Veterans Park. Women Veterans have always been a viable resource for the U.S. Armed Forces with little recognition for their sacrifices and contributions that they have made in service to our country. We are asking for your help. Please send you donations to: UMWSW, P.O. Box 2534, Las Cruces, NM 88004 or Gofundme/pf966o
Las Cruces Honors Veterans
Bands played and hundreds gathered to honor and support veterans throughout Southern New Mexico. Veterans said Veteran’s Day is a special day to recognize those who should be honored all year.
“As far as the Vietnam Veteran’s,” Robert De Herrera said. “We didn’t have no parades, or nobody said thank you or anything like that. We didn’t have any benefits, and everything has changed. And I’m so proud of these people that showed up today.”
“What I like about it is,” Roy Maldonado. “That history’s not repeating itself. When Vietnam Veteran’s and Korea came back, we forgot about those and all that. We have the Veteran’s now from Iraq and Afghanistan, we’re recognized. We have parades, we have all these events, and so this is a good time to bring all the organizations from different times of service. Bring them together and show the United States still supports them and stands behind them.”
“I think it’s just to show people that we’re appreciated,” Kirby Prickett said. “Sometimes we’re not shown that. It’s not a major thing with me, but I think it gives the citizens a chance to get out and welcome their veterans, and show their support.”
While thanking Veteran’s for their service, many says it’s also a time to remember the problems Veterans continue to face.
“The biggest problem is young guys coming back from war,” Gregory Long said. “Don’t want to have anything to do with organization or regimented things, and they don’t reach out for help soon enough.”
“I think we’re going forward and helping the veterans real good and all this,” Roy Maldonado said. “It’s just a communication problem we’re still having, the organization structure, and how the veteran’s get their benefits, so I think we are moving forward, and I think veteran’s are getting their benefits.”
After the parade others stopped by Veteran’s Memorial Park for a quiet moment to remember those who served.
Like Melissa Guillen, who came out with her father, a World War II Veteran.
“We just remember all the ones who fought for the war,” Guillen said. “Not only that, but we do honor my daddy and of course he fought for WWII and he is 92 years old, so we like to bring him out for lunch, and bring him to the memorial, and just spend the day.”
Vietnam Veterans War Memorial
Vietnam veterans from throughout the area gathered together on Tuesday, March 1, 2016, to witness the installation of an authentic Vietnam-era Huey Helicopter at Veterans Park in East Las Cruces.
As the centerpiece of the Vietnam War Memorial Monument, the 4,000-pound helicopter was lifted in place by two cranes that placed it on top of a 25-foot pillar. The vintage Huey was taken from the nearby War Eagles Air Museum in Santa Teresa and transported to Las Cruces on a large flatbed trailer.
The monument is the brainchild of local community leader J. Joe Martinez, who spent nine years developing the monument and raising funds from the private and public sector for the project.
The New Mexico Vietnam Veterans War Memorial Project in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is a partnership between the community, the private sector, and the State of New Mexico to fund and build a memorial to pay tribute the 398 New Mexico Vietnam veterans killed in action (1955-1975). The memorial, titled “Heroes Never Thanked,” also honors all Vietnam veterans who served in Southeast Asia and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives during the Vietnam War.The New Mexico Vietnam Veterans War Memorial will reside in the Las Cruces Veterans Park. Each Killed in Action Vietnam Veteran from New Mexico will have their photo metal engraved and set in a semi-circular stone wall as part of the memorial.

Las Cruces Awarded Federal Funds
11.22.11 (LAS CRUCES) -- The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is granting a sustainable community grant to Dona Ana County which will help improve the area's economic competitiveness.
Two million dollars is what's coming to the city and county as part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's sustainable community awards.
This will allow us to take a look at our communities as a whole system, as a whole group of activities and facilities and on that basis make decisions that will be efficient, and effect and that ideally will also have cost benefits in terms of reducing cost both for families but also for government, said County Commissioner Billy Garrett.
The federal funds will help connect housing with jobs, schools and transportation.
I think there are going to be very tangible results down the road. One of the things we know is that currently people are spending more than fifty percent of their house hold budgets on a combination of transportation and housing and a big part of that has to do with the way the developing is happening, he said.
A total of 27 communities and organizations are receiving community challenge grants while 29 regional areas are getting regional planning grants.
A very important part of the grant, this is not about doing all of the planning its about setting up ways of doing it so that we'll have a better way to eventually reach everybody, he said.
The money coming to Dona Ana County will be used mostly for planning. County leaders say the three-year project will include community input.

Las Cruces Remembers Those Who Served On Memorial Day
Across the country, people took time out of their schedules to reflect on all those veterans who died while serving. Las Cruces held many events to remember those who’ve fallen.
Teckla McGuinness was one of many who attended a memorial service at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery; she laid a wreath on the veteran’s monument to remember those she lost.
“In honor of all of our troops that have served and are serving now for our county and our freedom,” McGuinness said. “And for my dad especially who served in the Korea War, the ending, he served two tours in Vietnam and he retired from the Marine Corps in 1974.”
While all Veteran’s are remembered on Memorial Day, Dallas Landrem, Post Commander of the Las Cruces VFW says it is specifically to remember those that gave their lives while fighting.
“All the service men and women that have died have died for us,” Landrem said. “We have to remember this. Our country was born in battle and we’ve almost been in battle the whole life of the country. We need to honor the people that were willing to give their lives. A veteran is someone who at one point in life wrote a blank check to the United States of America for the amount up to and including their life, and it’s important we remember that.”
He says he remembers friends of his who died during the Vietnam War.
“Memorial Day I reflect back,” Landrem said. “And I think anybody who’s in a combat unit in any war always wonders why their friends died, and why they didn’t. That’s why a lot of the people that are coming back have problems cause you’re always wondering why were they killed and not me. Yes, your bringing tears to my eyes.”
Landrem says he is grateful to be part of such a supporting community.
“Las Cruces is a great town to live in,” Landrem said. “It’s a great town for veterans. New Mexico is actually a great state for a veteran to live in. We get many benefits here that we don’t get in other states that perhaps people don’t know about. But, the support is amazing and that’s what we need.”
Events were held across Las Cruces all weekend including the decoration of gravels of veterans and military personnel and a candlelight vigil.

21-Gun Salute
Santa Fe In1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Here in New Mexico, we also plan to celebrate the lives of our fallen officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The N.M. Department of Public Safety will honor our deceased Brothers and Sisters on May 23, 2012, at 10 am. A formal centennial ceremony to pay honor and respect to those officers who were killed in the line of duty will be held at the State Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe.
Additionally, the National Indian Law Enforcement Memorial will be held at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia, NM on May 3rd at 9 am. On May 8th at Noon, the Albuquerque Police and Bernalillo County Sheriffs Office will hold their memorial at Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque. The Southern Law Enforcement Fallen Officers Memorial will be held at the Las Cruces Convention Center in Las Cruces, NM on May 15, 2012 at 9 am.
