The Church of Purgatory is a baroque style cult building located in Via Ridola in the city of Matera. The construction of the church took place between 1725 and 1747 with funding from the Confraternity of Purgatory, from which it takes its name. In Baroque style, it is located on one of the main directives of the historical center of the city.
The church project is by Giuseppe Fatone di Andria, while the façade is by Vitoantonio Buonvino and Bartolomeo Martemucci. The façade is characterized by a series of decorations concerning the theme of death and redemption, from the angels that are located in the upper part, to the skulls represented in the wooden portal.
The interior of the church is a Greek cross. The central part is surmounted by an octagonal dome that rests on a circular drum supported by columns decorated with Corinthian capitals. The two side altars house eighteenth-century paintings, while on the main altar there is a painting with San Gaetano and the Madonna .
Above the entrance portal, on a wooden choir, is the pipe organ , built by Leonardo Carelli in 1755 ; it maintains almost its original phonic characteristics unaltered and was restored by Camillo Liguori between the end of the 18th century and the beginnings of the subsequent one, and Nicola Canosa in 2006 .
The instrument is fully mechanical transmission and has 9 registers ; the console is a window, with a single keyboard with first octave scavezza and pedals in the lectern without its own registers and constantly combined with the manual. The speech material is completely enclosed by a richly carved wooden case, with exhibition consisting of 45 barrels of Main arranged in three cusps in many fields, with mouths miter topped the painted stars.

Places to see in ( Matera - Italy )
( Matera - Italy ) is a city and a province in the region of Basilicata, in Southern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Matera and the capital of Basilicata from 1663 to 1806. The town lies in a small canyon carved out by the Gravina.
( Matera - Italy ) still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings (i sassi) southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.
( Matera - Italy ) is one of the most interesting, unusual and memorable tourist destinations in Italy. In the remote southern region of Basilicata (also called Lucania), still little-visited by foreign travellers, it is a town famous for its extensive cave-dwelling districts, the sassi.

MATERA TAKE ONE! ( ITALY)
MATERA TAKE ONE!
I SASSI

Matera Sassi Caveoso Basilicata, Italy
Matera's Sassi Caveoso is the impoverished sassi district with winding alley ways and staircases and limestone ravine dotted with cave houses. There are some frescoed cave churches and houses furnished as they typically would have been centuries ago in Basilicata, Italy. Background music is Pachabelly by Huma Huma.
