Historic Mackay Mansion - home of Bonanza King John Mackay
Jeff and Sarah tour the historic -- and some say haunted -- Mackay Mansion in Virginia City, Nevada. The 1860 mansion was home to the father of William Randolph Hearst and also to John Mackay, one of the richest men in the world when he died in 1902. Two robbers were killed inside the house when in 1883 they tried to gain access to the vault where gold and silver bullion were stored. This is episode #38 of the YouTube show History Hunters.

For sale: One Nevada town
About an hour south of Las Vegas is the tiny town of Cal-Nev-Ari, Nevada. Population: 375. It looks like many other desert communities that dot the Mojave Desert, but this one is different: It has a For Sale sign on it -- the whole thing. Mark Albert asked the town's owner why she's selling.
Esto es Virginia en invierno ja ja que frío
Nevada, the Abandoned State
Like most ghost towns Rhyolite, Nevada has a story to tell, the only difference being Rhyolite has a larger story. Rhyolite is in Nye County in the Bullfrog Hills, about 120 miles (190 km) northwest of Las Vegas, near the eastern edge of Death Valley.
Industrialist Charles M. Schwab bought the Montgomery Shoshone Mine in 1906 and invested heavily in infrastructure, including piped water, electric lines and railroad transportation, that served the town as well as the mine. By 1907, Rhyolite had electric lights, water mains, telephones, newspapers, a hospital, a school, an opera house, and a stock exchange. Published estimates of the town's peak population vary widely, but scholarly sources generally place it in a range between 3,500 and 5,000 in 1907--08.
Rhyolite declined almost as rapidly as it rose. After the richest ore was exhausted, production fell. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the financial panic of 1907 made it more difficult to raise development capital. In 1908, investors in the Montgomery Shoshone Mine, concerned that it was overvalued, ordered an independent study. When the study's findings proved unfavorable, the company's stock value crashed, further restricting funding. By the end of 1910, the mine was operating at a loss, and it closed in 1911. By this time, many out-of-work miners had moved elsewhere, and Rhyolite's population dropped well below 1,000. By 1920, there were a handful of people living there and a decade later the population was reduced to one 92 year old man.

10. Virginia City & Nevada City in Montana
Virginia city and Nevada city are about a mile apart from each other, along the Alder Gulch in Montana. They are at the site of one of the most valuable deposits of gold that have been located in the Rocky mountains, with an estimated one hundred million dollars worth having been found throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In the first three years alone, about thirty million dollars worth of gold was recovered, which made the two cities popular places for gold seekers.
When the gold ran out, however, people left- and there was only enough wealth to just about keep Virginia City running, with no chance of upgrading the infrastructure. Today, it is still the way it was then. A ghost town, a frozen reminder of the Old West. In a turnaround of fortune, it’s now a popular tourist destination where you can go to experience the thrill of the gold rush, albeit without any gold, for yourself.
9. Bodie, California
The Californian gold rush between 1877 and 1888 spawned its own series of towns full of gold seekers, with one of the largest being Bodie, in the eastern Sierra. In its heyday the town was home to more than 10,000 people; all reliant on the nearby treasures of which more than thirty five million dollars worth of gold and silver were found.
Of course, as happened with many places like this, when the gold became scarce the people began to move in search elsewhere. This soon left Bodie as an abandoned town, one that has been kept in a state of “arrested decay” for visitors to explore. The 170 wooden buildings haven’t been touched since they were abandoned, with bottles and desks still sat where they were left in the schoolhouse, saloon, church and barbershop.
8. Kennecott, Alaska
In 1900, copper had become a valuable commodity for the use in wiring as electricity became popular. Two prospectors found an area with the richest concentration of copper that had ever been found; the only problem being it was on a glacier in Alaska. Wealthy investors were brought in who provided the machinery and a railroad track and built a town called Kennecott. All they needed to do was hire a workforce, which they had to offer far higher salaries to, to make the job appealing.
By 1938, however, the mines had run dry. They were shut, along with the railroad, and Kennecott soon became a ghost town. It was later sold into private ownership, and then purchased by the park service in 1998, who have turned it into a National Historic landmark, and one of the most popular destinations in Alaska.
7. South Pass City, Wyoming
As a small gold rush town, South Pass city may seem no different to the others, but it was the site of two important historic events while the gold seekers were in town.
The city was founded in 1867 after Mormon prospectors found gold in the nearby Wind River mountains. Within a year more than 250 buildings had been built, with over 1,000 residents moving in. The half mile long main street featured hotels, restaurants, a bowling alley and dozens of saloons, but the success wasn’t to last long. After growing to around 3,000 inhabitants in 1868, the numbers began to dwindle by 1869 due to the small quantity of gold being found, and by 1872 there were only a few hundred people left.
During this successful time for the city, it also became the first place, in 1869, to introduce a women’s suffrage bill, which led to Wyoming being the first state where women could vote. Soon after that, Esther Hobart, a resident of the city, became the first woman in the country to hold a position in public office when she was appointed as the justice of the peace.
Despite all of this, South Pass city would eventually become a ghost town, with the last few people leaving for good in 1949. In 1966 it was bought from private landowners by the state of Wyoming as a present to its residents, and now is run as a tourist attraction.

With regard to handguns, if you are entitled to possess a gun in Nevada, you may possess a loaded gun in your vehicle. But if you are carrying the gun on your body, the gun must be visible unless you have a CCW.
It is unlawful to carry a loaded rifle or loaded shotgun in a vehicle except if you are a paraplegic, you are a police officer going to your workplace, or you are member of the armed services going to and from duty. (NRS 503.165)
Another exception is that you are not allowed to possess firearms in a school zone.

A new book is highlighting some of the top-secret locations in America that could serve as a de facto White House in the event of a nuclear strike. A bunker built into a hollowed out mountain in Colorado is just one of the covert shelters where 7,000 Americans will go to in the event of nuclear annihilation, according to Garrett Graff, the author of 'Raven Rock: The U.S. Government's Secret Plan to Save Itself While the Rest of Us Die.'

6. Dudleytown
Back in the infancy of our country Dudleytown was a small settlement in Cornwall, Connecticut. The Dudley family owned the land, but never turned the area into an official town. For decades they allowed others to settle on their plot. Unfortunately for those trying to forge a life in the settlement the land wasn’t very good for farming and it was ultimately abandoned sometime in the 19th century. Trees had their way with the land for centuries and starting in the 1980’s rumors of ghost activities began. This lead to increased vandalism. As a result the owners closed the land to the public and today it remains private property.
5. North Brother Island
Urban explorers and history buffs alike are drawn to New York’s North Brother Island, a 13 acre stretch of land that was once home to Riverside, a quarantine hospital. The medical facility operated from 1885 until 1963, during which time it famously housed Typhoid Mary. After it's closure the hospital was left totally abandoned. With no one there to keep things tidy, nature has had her way with the building. Trees and roots run rampant in and around the structure creating a fascinating site for those brave enough to traverse the desolate island.
4. Thurmond
This town in West Virginia, which is almost completely vacant has become a relic of the past. Today much of it is owned by the National Park Service but it still looks the way it did when it was a booming coal town in the 1920’s. Though it's mostly a ghost town there are, at last count five people still living within its borders. In 2005, during city elections, six of Thurmond’s seven residents sought election.
3. South Pass City Wyoming
In the mid 1800’s South Pass City was used as a stage and telegraph station along the Oregon Trail. Gold was discovered in the vicinity in 1866 and by 1870 the town was filled with thousands of prospectors. Everyone hoped that large deposits of gold lay further under the earth, but none were found and by the mid 1870’s the population was down to around 100 individuals. A few businesses continued to forge a living in South Pass City, but these pioneer families finally moved out in 1949. By the end of the 20th century many of the town’s homes were in a state of disrepair until finally being restored as a historic site for tourists.
2. Cahaba
Cahaba established itself in the history of Alabama and the United States by becoming the first permanent state capital in 1820. It's low elevation and location at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers meant that the village was subject to seasonal flooding. Consequently the capital was moved to Tuscaloosa in January 1826. Cahaba would remain an important town and become a major distribution point for cotton. During the Civil War the Confederacy seized Cahabas railroad and turned a large cotton warehouse into a prison, where roughly 3,000 Union soldiers were held. Floods persisted throughout the town’s history and by the turn of the 20th century most of it's buildings and people had been relocated. It became the subject and setting of many ghost stories. Today Cahaba is a fascinating historical site where visitors can still see old streets, cemeteries and government buildings of what was once the state capital.
Hey friends hope you’re enjoying the vid. Just wanted to say thanks for watching and if you have any suggestions for something you wanted to see let us know in the comments section and we may just make it happen for you. Have a great day. And now number...
1. Bannack Montana
Montana may not be the most popular or talked about state in America, but it's a really cool place to go, especially for those with a love of the outdoors. Just outside of Bannack State Park, in Beaverhead County lies Bannack a small town named after a tribe of Indians that has long since been abandoned. Founded in 1862 when gold was discovered in the area, Bannack briefly served as the capital of the Montana Territory in 1864. It persisted as a mining town, though its population dwindled steadily until the last residents left in the 1970’s. Today Bannack remains a very well preserved ghost town with buildings like the Methodist Church and Hotel Meade looking as though they could be put into full use at a moment's notice.
