ENGLAND - MARGATE - Walpole Bay Tidal Rock Pool - 80th Anniversary
AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO SEE A UNIQUE SECRET MARINE UNDERWORLD
WITHOUT DIVING! Where? Watch this video and read here below.
MARGATE is the quintessential seaside resort in the UK
and it is also home to a rather special watery wonder:
THE WALPOLE BAY POOL in Cliftonville,
one of the biggest tidal pool in the country.
It is four acres with a swimming width
equivalent to 6 lengths of a 25-metre pool…
and it celebrated its 80th ANNIVERSARY.
WHAT IS A TIDAL POOL?
Tidal pools are rocky pools on the seashore
which are filled with seawater,
many of which exist as separate pools only at low tide.
They can be natural or man-made,
like the swimming pools designed by the Victorians
for salt-water bathing and exercise.
But... UNLIKE A TYPICAL TIDAL POOL,
where the water constantly rises and falls with the tide,
The Walpole Bay Pool was built to trap the water
within its concrete walls.
More than 7 million gallons of seawater,
contained both night and day,
creates an unusually stable environment for marine life to thrive.
CURIOSITY:
The Walpole Bay Tidal Pool is wild and free.
It is filled by the sea and surprisingly…
clean water coming out of its natural floor,
from pure fresh water springs arising from the beach.
THE CONSTRUCTION:
The Walpole Bay Tidal Pool was built in 1937
to make it possible for large numbers of people
to bathe in the sea at all states of the tides.
An Art-Deco-style concrete lift provided easy access
from the top of the cliff to the foreshore.
It was an ambitious engineering feat: walls on three sides
with the chalk beach used as a floor.
Each concrete block weighed about one ton
and had to be fixed into position by hand crane.
The work was carried out by day and night
to take advantage of every tide.
In England, only few were built as large
and survive as complete as the Walpole Bay Tidal Pool.
This structure has social historical interest
as it provided an improvement to sea bathing
at the period of the greatest popularity of the English seaside.
TIP:
AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO SEE
A UNIQUE SECRET MARINE UNDERWORLD
WITHOUT DIVING!
Rather than diving to find deep-water species
you can simply walk onto the site.
WHEN? Once every 6 months,
The Walpole Bay swimming Pool gets completely drained
turning it into a giant rock pool
which reveals a secret subtidal world
that people can ever get to see.
A kind of wildlife that you would only ever see
in much deeper waters.
This amazing opportunity only happens
when the structure is emptied of water
for a routine structural inspection.
You will be able to walk around
what would normally be at 3-metre-deep dive.
While the pool is full,
it is used by the swimmers with no idea of what
wildlife treasures are lurking beneath them.
As the gates are opened and the water recedes,
a spectacular marine world is revealed
spanning more than four acres.
A world full of wildlife that would normally remain hidden
much further out to see.
As the pool is unaffected by the tides for most of the year
it creates a stable and protected environment
for marine life to flourish.
And when the annual structural check-up is completed,
the intertidal kingdom disappears under the waves
once again.
A perfect spot for both the wild swimmers and the wild life.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Walpole Bay Pool...
80 years without showing it!

Walpole Bay Tidal Pool @ 80
In June 2017 Rob Ball and Karen Shepherdson were commissioned to make photographic portraits as part of Cliftonville’s Walpole Bay Tidal Pool’s 80th anniversary celebrations. These photographs contribute to both Ball and Shepherdson’s practice based research, considering how diverse coastal communities make use of democratic, free seaside spaces and how the medium of photography can contribute to innovative, positive (re)presention, (re)interpretation and (re)evaluation of previously disregarded coastal sites.
Karen Shepherdson is Reader in Photography at Canterbury Christ Church University, and in this rôle directs the South East Archive of Seaside (SEAS) Photography and co-directs the Centre for Research on Communities and Cultures. Her practice-based research which is centered around photography, curating and writing. Visual catalyst for her work resides in the coastal environment and critical to that practice is working close to home - being part of a diverse and complex coastal community.
Rob Ball is a Senior Lecturer Photography and Deputy Director of SEAS Photography. Rob makes work about coastal communities and as a practice-based researcher Rob’s output is predominantly visual, frequently realised in the form of exhibition and publication. Dreamlands was published by Dewi Lewis in 2015 and his latest book about Coney Island was released in 2017.

Welcome to Margate
Margate is seaside town located in the district of Thanet, Kent, UK. A traditional kiss me quick culture of fish & chips by the sea, sandy beaches, retro shops and a quirky art inspired town. There is the Turner Contemporary art gallery, amusement park Dreamland, UK's smallest Theatre The Tom Thumb, Edwardian hotel The Walpole Bay and much more.
This is what Margate means to me and this a collection of visuals I have created to capture this seaside town.

Margate's central beach offers visitors an award-winning wide, sandy stretch backed by a traditional seaside resort. A boardwalk gives easy access to the beach and is the perfect spot to while away a sunny afternoon while young visitors enjoy splashing at the water's edge and playing in the sand. Older children may enjoy a trip to Dreamland - Margate's iconic theme-park, which re-opened in 2015.
The Old Town Quarter of Margate has undergone a successful regeneration in recent years, now providing a good selection of shabby-chic shops and atmospheric cafes - it is known by some as Shoreditch-on-Sea.
The Turner Contemporary, on the seafront is a short walk from the beach. This prestigious, modern gallery was opened in 2011 on the precise spot where the great artist himself once lived.
This part of the Thanet coastline offers a variety of interesting walks, either towards Botany Bay and Broadstairs, or in the other direction, towards Birchington.
For visitors who enjoy wild swimming but want to avoid dangerous sea currents a trip to Grade II listed Walpole Bay tidal swimming pool in Cliftonville is a must. The water in the pool is deep and the walls are high, so this 80-year old leisure facility is not really suitable for children or non-swimmers.

Margate is a seaside town in the district of Thanet in Kent, England. It lies 38.1 miles east-north-east of Maidstone, on the coast along the North Foreland and contains the areas of Cliftonville, Garlinge, Palm Bay and Westbrook.
For at least 250 years, Margate has been a leading seaside resort in the UK, drawing Londoners to its beaches, Margate Sands. The bathing machines in use at Margate were described in 1805 as four-wheeled carriages, covered with canvas, and having at one end of them an umbrella of the same materials which is let down to the surface of the water, so that the bather descending from the machine by a few steps is concealed from the public view, whereby the most refined female is enabled to enjoy the advantages of the sea with the strictest delicacy.
The Dreamland Amusement Park (featured in The Jolly Boys' Outing extended episode of the television series Only Fools and Horses) is situated in the centre of Margate. It reopened in 2015, having been closed since 2006 following a lengthy campaign by the group Save Dreamland Campaign. The Scenic Railway roller coaster at Dreamland, which opened in 1920, is Grade II* Listed and the second oldest in the world, was severely damaged in a fire on 7 April 2008 but has now been fully restored and reopened to the public in October 2015. Today the Dreamland roller coaster is one of only two early-20th century scenic railways still remaining in the UK; the only other surviving UK scenic railway is in Great Yarmouth and was built in 1932. The Margate roller coaster is an ACE Coaster Classic. Cliftonville, next to Margate, has a classic British Arnold Palmer seaside mini golf course.
There are two notable theatres, the Theatre Royal in Addington Street – the second oldest theatre in the country – and the Tom Thumb Theatre, the second smallest in the country, in addition to the Winter Gardens. The Theatre Royal was built in 1787, burned down in 1829 and was remodelled in 1879 giving Margate more national publicity. The exterior is largely from the 19th century.[15] From 1885 to 1899 actor-manager Sarah Thorne ran a school for acting at the Theatre Royal which is widely regarded as Britain's first formal drama school. Actors who received their initial theatrical training there include Harley Granville-Barker, Evelyn Millard, Louis Calvert, George Thorne, Janet Achurch, Adelaide Neilson and Irene and Violet Vanbrugh, among others. An annual jazz festival takes place on a weekend in June.
Margate Museum in Market Place explores the town's seaside heritage in a range of exhibits and displays, and is now opened at weekends by a team of volunteers. First discovered in 1798, the Margate Caves (also known as the Vortigern Caves) are situated at the bottom of Northdown Road. They are currently closed to the public.
The Shell Grotto, which has walls and roof covered in elaborate decorations of over four million shells covering 2,000 square feet (190 m2) in complex patterns, was rediscovered in 1835, but is of unknown age and origin. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building. There is a 16th-century 2-storey timber-framed Tudor house built on a flint plinth in King Street. Margate's Jubilee Clock Tower was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, although not completed until 1889. It had a Time Ball mechanism, mounted on a mast atop the tower, which was raised a few minutes before 1pm each day and dropped at precisely 1pm, thereby allowing residents, visitors and ships to know the exact time. This was, of course, in the days before wireless transmission of time signals.
