St. Louis is a major independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city, forming the fourth-longest river system in the world. The city had an estimated 2018 population of 302,838 and is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area (home to nearly 3,000,000 people), which is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, and the 20th-largest in the United States.
Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named after Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain and retroceded back to France in 1800. In 1803, the United States acquired the territory as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; at the time of the 1870 Census, it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.
The economy of metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. Home to nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri, the metro area counts among its major corporations Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina, Olin Corporation, and Sigma-Aldrich.
The city has also become known for its growing medical, pharmaceutical, and research institutions, including as Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis University, and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis has two professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. Among the city's iconic sights is the 630-foot (192 m) Gateway Arch in the downtown area. St. Louis is also home to the Saint Louis Zoo, perennially ranked as one of the nation's best, and the Missouri Botanical Garden, with the second-largest herbarium in North America

World Wide Magazine - St. Louis Centre, the perfect family atmosphere
An excerpt from World Wide Magazine, a public access TV show from St. Louis, MO. The show was created by the late Pete Parisi. It ran from 1986 to 2001.
This clip takes place at St. Louis Centre, which when it opened in 1986 was the largest urban shopping mall in the United States, with over 120 stores and 20 restaurants. Without much of a residential presence in downtown St. Louis, the mall was fairly vacant by the late 1990s, when this was likely shot. It was eventually closed completely in 2006 and awaits redevelopment.

History
Main article: History of St. Louis
The area that would become St. Louis was a center of Native American Mississippian culture, which built numerous temple and residential earthwork mounds in the region, giving the city its early nickname, the Mound City. European exploration of the area began in 1673, when French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette traveled through the Mississippi River valley. Five years later, La Salle claimed the region for France as part of French Louisiana.
The earliest settlements in the area were built in Illinois Country (also known as Upper Louisiana) during the 1690s and early 1700s at Cahokia, Kaskaskia, and Fort de Chartres. Migrants from the eastern French villages founded Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, across the Mississippi River from Kaskaskia, and in early 1764, Pierre Laclède and his stepson Auguste Chouteau founded the city of St. Louis.[7]
From 1764 to 1803 European control of the area west of the Mississippi to the northernmost part of the Missouri River basin, called Louisiana, was assumed by the Spanish as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1780, St. Louis was attacked by British forces, mostly Native Americans, during the American Revolutionary War.[8]
Why part of the War of 1812 was fought in Missouri
There are skirmishes you have to dig to find in the history books because they were sideshows to a much bigger battle.
The War of 1812, ostensibly between Britain and the United States, ended up also being fought between Americans and Native Americans. This included those in the Missouri and Illinois territories.
The war really had to do with people who lived in the St. Louis area and St. Charles county attempting to protect themselves from the Shawnee who had been British allies in the war of 1812. said Dr. Robert Archibald of the Missouri History Museum.
What the Shawnee and other tribes did was raid American settlements using arms supplied by the British.
The settlements in the west were protected by their close ties with the Osage who remained friendly to the settlers in Missouri. But Tucumsah and the Shawnee and others allied with them conducted raids in Missouri along the communities on the Missouri and Mississippi River. It really came down in Missouri to simple raids on farms and settlements by Indians who had alliances with the British. said Dr. Robert Archibald.
While those battles were small and brief. They did leave their mark on local history. In St. Charles county one man was so concerned about the possibility of attack he added two wings to his home and surrounded it with a stockade fence.
His name was Jacob Zumwalt. His modified home became known as Fort Zumwalt. It seemed like such a good idea that one of Zumwalt's neighbors also built a fort. His name was Francis Howell.

The protesting and rioting never seem to end. It gets exhausting just reading and hearing about it after a while.
St. Louis, Missouri has been hit with a wave of protests after a white police officer was acquitted in the killing of an African American man while on duty. Even the Mayor’s house was vandalized by some of these people. But it doesn’t stop there.
The Daily Mail reported the following,
“U2 has cancelled its St Louis concert as more protests erupt in the Missouri city over the acquittal of a white cop who shot dead a black man in 2011. Thirty-two people were arrested for the upheaval which saw at least ten officers injured including one who had his jaw broken and another who dislocated his shoulder on Friday night.
On Saturday, another 300 marched at West County Center Mall to carry on their demonstration for a second night. Macy’s closed its doors in fear of the crowd and there was an increased police presence at the mall. They are angry about the acquittal of white cop Jason Stockley who was cleared of murdering black drug dealer Anthony Smith in 2011 on Friday after years of anticipation. Many believe Stockley planted a gun in Smith’s car after he shot him six times following a high-speed car chase. The weapon had none of the dead man’s DNA on it but Stockey’s fingerprints were picked up.
Despite public outcry over the shooting, Brockley was acquitted of first degree murder yesterday and the decision sparked uproar in the Missouri town. In response to the decision, protesters stormed the mayor’s house and burned flags outside, threatening more violence on Saturday night. With this in mind, U2 issued a statement on Saturday announcing it had cancelled its concert.
‘We have been informed by the St. Louis Police Department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event of this size.’We have also been informed that local crowd security personnel would not be at full capacity.’In light of this information, we cannot in good conscience risk our fans’ safety by proceeding with tonight’s concert. As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment,’ the band said in a statement.”
Look at some of the pictures from the protest,
Here are the pictures of the victim and the police officer involved in the shooting that started this mayhem,
Updates were given to those concertgoers who had already purchased tickets,
“Ticketholders will be able to claim a refund online or at their place of purchase, they added. With more protests feared to take place on Saturday night, an angry crowd formed at West County Mall to march. They were non-violent and marched through the mall chanting various slogans. Friday night’s protests were decidedly more threatening.
Police found guns at some of the protest sites and were forced to put out dumpster fires in other areas. In a late night message, Mayor Lyda Krewson, who was forced to flee her home as protesters descended on it, joined St Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson to deliver a message to the city’s residents.’Our officers have been very tolerant and have used great restraint however this evening we’ve had some incidents.”
The Daily Mail also noted the response to the actual case by public officials,
“On Friday night, protesters used milk to take the pepper spray out of their eyes.
The head of the NAACP St. Louis asked President Donald Trump and the Justice Department to immediately review Stockley’s acquittal. St. Louis Public Radio reports that in a letter sent Friday, St. Louis NAACP president Adolphus Pruitt said the Justice Department needed to give immediate attention to the case ‘to get to the truth of what happened and to ensure that justice has been served.’ Pruitt said the community has lost faith in local authorities to fairly handle such cases.
He cited the remarks from Albert Watkins, the attorney for Smith’s fiancee. Watkins said ruling was ‘appallingly contrary’ to evidence in the case. Watkins said the family disagrees with the judge’s ruling that the state didn’t meet its burden of proof for a finding that the officer was guilty of murder.
Watkins and Smith’s fiance, Christina Wilson, on Thursday appealed for calm and non-violent protest no matter what verdict was issued. Wells Fargo Advisors, brokerage and investment firm Stifel and Nestle Purina PetCare all sent thousands of employees home Friday after the acquittal. And an Alzheimer’s Walk scheduled for Saturday in downtown St. Louis was postponed.”

Around 100 protesters gathered inside the West County Center in the St. Louis suburb of Des Peres on Friday to protest against a grand jury ruling to not indict white police officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of unarmed African American teenager Michael Brown. Protesters also blocked the Interstate 270 highway for five minutes before being moved by police.
The protest began at roughly 1530 local time (2130 GMT) as shoppers perused the mall on Black Friday, traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States. No arrests were reported.
Racial tensions have remained high in Ferguson following the August 9 fatal shooting of Brown, and hundreds of people have been arrested in protests since the grand jury announced its decision not to indict Wilson on Monday. Brown was shot six times with two shots to his head, according to an autopsy. Eye-witness accounts say his hands were raised as he was killed.
