Great Blue Hill, MA
On 10/4/2015, I went to the Blue Hills Reservation for the first time. My primary goal was to check out the park's namesake and the Norfolk County HP, Great Blue Hill. Nice and rocky trails, and good views from the observation towers. I also visited Wolcott Hill, also in the park, to tack on additional mileage and vertical gain.

Summit of Mount Everett, Berkshire County Massachusetts
Some video I shot from the summit of Mount Everett, located on the Riga Plateau in the southwestern tip of Massachusetts (Berkshire County). I shot this on February 26th, 2012. It was a very clear, sunny day, and despite an unusually mild winter, most of the mountain was covered in snow with the top 300 feet or so totally covered in ice. Great views of other summits on the Plateau and what looks to be the Adirondacks or the Catskills out in the distance.
Berkshire county accounted for the most snow in western Massachusetts
Many towns in the Berkshires are located higher up in elevation which usually means more snow than the in valley.

STORYLINE:
Tornadoes roared through the US state of Massachusetts on Wednesday, causing widespread damage in about two dozen communities, ripping off roofs, uprooting trees, scattering debris and leaving at least four dead throughout the state.
The twisters sheared off the tops of roofs on Main Street in Springfield, a city of more than 150,000 about 90 miles (145km) west of Boston.
The streets were covered in debris and police cordons had been put up preventing people from getting near damaged buildings.
John Tuey, the Fire Chief of the Milford Fire Department said a large area had been affected and there were a lot of damaged buildings that still needed to be searched.
A resident, whose home was destroyed, said it was the first time Springfield had experienced such devastation.
Everybody you see, they lost their house, car; families right now in hotels, in shelters, you know when God wants something, he wants it, he said.
As people trawled through the wreckage of their homes others were searching for lost pets.
Manny Masefield from the Masschussets State response team had managed to rescue a bird and was still looking for a cat that the owners had left behind during the chaos.
The tornadoes shocked emergency officials and residents, more accustomed to dealing with snow and bone-chilling cold than funnel clouds spawned by spring storms.
Massachusetts hasn't experienced a tornado since 2008, but normally averages about two tornadoes per year.
The last killer tornado in Massachusetts was on May 29, 1995, when three people died in Great Barrington, a town along the New York state border.
The state's deadliest recorded tornado on June 9, 1953, killed 94 people in the Worcester area.
State police said at least 5 people were seriously injured and required surgery.

Vinca minor (common names lesser periwinkle or dwarf periwinkle) is a species of flowering plant native to central and southern Europe, from Portugal and France north to the Netherlands and the Baltic States, east to the Caucasus, and also southwestern Asia in Turkey. Other vernacular names used in cultivation include small periwinkle, common periwinkle, and sometimes in the United States, myrtle or creeping myrtle. The species is commonly grown as a groundcover in temperate gardens for its evergreen foliage, spring and summer flowers, ease of culture, and dense habit that smothers most weeds. It was once commonly planted in cemeteries in parts of the American South and naturalized periwinkle may indicate the presence of graves whose other markers have disappeared. The species has few pests or diseases outside its native range and is widely naturalised and classified as an invasive species in parts of North America. Invasion can be restricted by removal of rooting stems in spring. Once established, it is difficult to eradicate, as its waxy leaves shed most water-based herbicide sprays. Removal involves cutting, followed by immediate application of concentrated glyphosate or triclopyr to the cut stems.

Racism, School Desegregation Laws and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States
The African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955--1968) refers to the social movements in the United States aimed at outlawing racial discrimination against black Americans and restoring voting rights to them. This article covers the phase of the movement between 1955 and 1968, particularly in the South. The emergence of the Black Power Movement, which lasted roughly from 1966 to 1975, enlarged the aims of the Civil Rights Movement to include racial dignity, economic and political self-sufficiency, and freedom from oppression by white Americans.
The movement was characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance. Between 1955 and 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced crisis situations between activists and government authorities. Federal, state, and local governments, businesses, and communities often had to respond immediately to these situations that highlighted the inequities faced by African Americans. Forms of protest and/or civil disobedience included boycotts such as the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955--1956) in Alabama; sit-ins such as the influential Greensboro sit-ins (1960) in North Carolina; marches, such as the Selma to Montgomery marches (1965) in Alabama; and a wide range of other nonviolent activities.
Noted legislative achievements during this phase of the Civil Rights Movement were passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964, that banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin in employment practices and public accommodations; the Voting Rights Act of 1965, that restored and protected voting rights; the Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965, that dramatically opened entry to the U.S. to immigrants other than traditional European groups; and the Fair Housing Act of 1968, that banned discrimination in the sale or rental of housing. African Americans re-entered politics in the South, and across the country young people were inspired to action.
Desegregation busing in the United States (also known as forced busing or simply busing) is the practice of assigning and transporting students to schools in such a manner as to redress prior racial segregation of schools, or to overcome the effects of residential segregation on local school demographics.

Edward Luce ─ The Retreat of Western Liberalism (moderated by Mark Blyth)
Skip ahead to main speaker at 2:20
Join Financial Times chief U.S. columnist and commentator Edward Luce for a discussion of his latest book, The Retreat of Western Liberalism. The discussion will be moderated by Mark Blyth, Eastman Professor of Political Economy and Professor of Political Science and International and Public Affairs.
In his widely acclaimed book Time to Start Thinking, Edward Luce charted the course of American economic and geopolitical decline, proving to be a prescient voice on our current social and political turmoil.
In The Retreat of Western Liberalism, Luce makes a larger statement about the weakening of western hegemony and the crisis of democratic liberalism—of which Donald Trump and his European counterparts are not the cause, but a symptom. Luce argues that we are on a menacing trajectory brought about by ignorance of what it took to build the West, arrogance toward society’s economic losers, and complacency about our system’s durability—attitudes that have been emerging since the fall of the Berlin Wall, treated by the West as an absolute triumph over the East. We cannot move forward without a clear diagnosis of what has gone wrong. Unless the West can rekindle an economy that produces gains for the majority of its people, its political liberties may be doomed.
Combining on-the-ground reporting with intelligent synthesis of the literature and economic analysis, Luce offers a detailed projection of the consequences of the Trump administration and a forward-thinking analysis of what those who believe in enlightenment values must do to defend them from the multiple onslaughts they face in the coming years.
Edward Luce is a graduate of Oxford University in politics, philosophy, and economics. He worked as a speech writer for the treasury secretary in the Clinton administration, worked as the South Asia bureau chief for the Financial Times, and is based in Washington DC as the Financial Times Washington columnist and commentator
Co-sponsored by the Taubman Center and the Watson Institute.
