Wine Museum in Paris, Episode 124
Places Mentioned in this Episode: Musée du Vin, Paris Wine Museum.
Today we answer the question: Is the Wine Museum in Paris a must-see? The guest of today’s show, Brenda visited the wine museum in July 2016. Annie hadn’t visited it at the time of this recording. This museum is 1km away from the Eiffel Tower; the closest metro stop is Passy on line 6 of the Paris Métro. It’s open Tue-Sat 10am until 6pm and is wheelchair accessible. There are audio guides in English. Entry is 10€ and it is not on the Museum Pass. Possibly as a result of it not being on the Museum Pass, the Wine Museum is not crowded.

Chartrons district
Google maps location :
Between the Quai des Chartrons and the Cours de Verdun, Portal and Saint-Louis, this quarter is named after the Carthusians who once lived here, leaving in the 15C to make way for an enormous wine depot. In the 18C, Bordeaux merchants built some beautiful private residences here. In the 19C, small working-class houses known as échoppes were built here; these buildings are now a typical feature of the outlying districts of the city.
In 13812, a convent of Carthusian brothers was founded outside the walls. A suburb develops around the monastery.
The development of this former drained swamp begins with the installation in the seventeenth century of English, Flemish and Irish merchants. Obliged to settle outside the walls, they create an influential wine aristocracy, known in derision as Aristocratie du Bouchon, and their proximity to the monastery makes them nicknamed chartrons by the people of Bordeaux. Broker and merchant, they founded companies that sold wine in their country of origin. Little by little, vast aging and storage warehouses are being built along the Garonne. They were intended to receive the wine which arrived in gabarre of the wines of the high country of the vineyard of the southwest and to prepare the wines for the expeditions towards Northern Europe. The Irishman Pierre Mitchell installed the first Bordeaux glassworks there in 1723 which became the main bottle factory in France and facilitated the marketing and export of wine.
Pastor Antoine Vermeil worked in the Chartrons district from 1824 to 1840. In 1829 he created a “Protestant charity office” and a charitable society. He opened a primary school and an asylum room. He is the main craftsman of the Chartrons temple and a Protestant cemetery.
The families of the big merchants were strongly influenced by the first of Anglo-Saxon origin. Even families from Alsace or the Rhône valley took on a connotation across the Channel. Commercial and matrimonial alliances were the basis of a self-sufficient community until the 1970s. This influence is always notable in the name of the castles of the Médoc vineyard: family from Tom Barton to Langoa Barton or Léoville Barton, Rothschild family to Lafite chateaux and Mouton, John Lynch, founder of the castles of Lynch-Bages and Lynch-Moussas, Boyd family in Boyd-Cantenac ... Château Prieuré-Lichine confirms the internationalization of trading with the arrival of the Russian Alexis Lichine.
During the years 1993 to 2007, the former Colbert cruiser of the national navy was moored at the quays of Chartrons to become a museum. The need for renovation of the ship, including the painting, required 1.5 million euros that the defense association could not raise. Still owned by the navy, it joined Brest in 2007 to be dismantled there.
In the post-war years, the district was gradually deserted by traders. The reputation of the district suffers, between empty warehouses abandoned.
At the dawn of the 2000s, this area close to the city center, with typical old architecture and the Garonne front prompted decision makers to undertake its rehabilitation. Extensive programs create modern homes and offices while preserving the facades steeped in history. Badly famed, the district becomes trendy and is colonized by antique dealers and second-hand dealers. The restaurants and bistros on the Garonne front give day and night life to the trendy district.
The district is home to the Cité du Vin and the INAO center in Bordeaux and the ONIVINS regional delegation, which has since become VINIFLHOR and then FranceAgriMer.
Rue Borie, the Chartrons museum traces the rich past of the district linked to wine trading and trade.
This district was mentioned by the writer François Mauriac in his work

Place de la Bourse (Place Royale) in Bordeaux, France
Place de la Bourse is a square in Bordeaux, France and one of the city's most recognisable sights. Built from 1730 to 1775 along the Garonne River, it was a multi-building development designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel. It is within the historic part of the city that has been recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble of the 18th century.
The Place de la Bourse is the first breach in the ramparts of the Middle Ages and is intended to serve as a sumptuous setting for the equestrian statue, destroyed in the Revolution, the King of France Louis XV. Inaugurated in 1749, it is the symbol of the prosperity of the city. Successively named Place Royale, Freedom Square during the Revolution, imperial place under Napoleon I, it regains its original name to the restoration. In 1848, the fall of Louis-Philippe I , it takes the place of the name of the Exchange.
Intendant Boucher wants to open the city on the river. He wants to modernize Bordeaux and offer a more welcoming face of the city abroad arriving by the right bank of the Garonne. Part of the walls around Bordeaux is removed and a Royal Square is built. An equestrian statue of King Louis XV, masterpiece of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, is placed in its center and solemnly inaugurated on August 19, 1743 .
The statue was shot on August 20, 1792 and melted during the Revolution to make cannons, then replaced by a tree of freedom. She briefly took the name of Place Imperial on the occasion of the coming of Napoleon.
In 1828, under the Restoration, the city raised a modest fountain, in the form of a pink marble column surmounted by a white capital and a globe, on the site of the equestrian statue that had disappeared during the Revolution. In 1869, it is replaced by the current fountain of the Three Graces representing Aglaé , Euphrosyne and Thalia , the daughters of Zeus , drawn by Louis Visconti , sculpted by Charles Gumery and cast by the foundry Thiébaut Frères. As of October 2009, and this every year of the same month, an awareness campaign toBreast cancer uses as vector the Three Graces of the Place de la Bourse, wrapped in pink and bathed in a dewy water.
In the 1990s, the Bordeaux Stock Exchange, as a trading venue, closed like the other regional stock exchanges and faded in favor of the Paris Stock Exchange.
This place is one of the most representative works of the French classical architectural art of the xviii th century. To the north stood the Palais de la Bourse (current Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Bordeaux ) and south the Hotel des Fermes (now Interregional Directorate of Customs and Indirect Rights which houses the National Museum of Customs ). The latter is made by Ange-Jacques Gabriel between 1735 and 1738 and the sculptures represent Minerve protecting the arts and Mercury favoring the commerce of the city.
The pediments of the other buildings and the masks are carved by Jacques Verbeckt , Vernet and Prome. The pediments represent: the grandeur of the princes, Neptune opening the trade, the junction Garonne - Dordogne, the Time discovering the Truth.
The inspirations of the masks are many: to the traditional Neptune and Bacchus are added fantastic animals, female figures, carnival faces, angels, beasts. But the masks of the Place de la Bourse also reflect the history of Bordeaux with for example the reproduction of faces of African women in reference to the slave trade that made the wealth of the city with triangular trade.
The dial of the clock is Hustin, a pottery Bordeaux and the interior is composed of paintings and tapestries Gobelins .

I visited Reims and Troyes in August, 2012.
The Roman Catholic cathedral of Reims, where the kings of France were once crowned. It replaces an older church, destroyed by a fire in 1211, which was built on the site of the basilica where Clovis was baptized by Saint Remi, bishop of Reims, in AD 496.
The cathedral became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
In 2011, the city of Reims celebrated the cathedral's 800th anniversary。
Troyes is a commune and the capital of the Aube department. It is located on the Seine river about 150 km (93 mi) southeast of Paris. Many half-timbered houses (mainly of the 16th century) survive in the old town. Troyes has been in existence since the Roman era, as Augustobona Tricassium, which stood at the hub of numerous highways, primarily the Via Agrippa. In medieval times Troyes was an important international trade centre, centring around the Troyes Fair. The great fire of 1524 destroyed much of the medieval city, in spite of the city's numerous canals.

WAITING FOR VINEXPO | WineryLoversXperience 004
In June I went to Bordeaux for Vinexpo. But I went some days before the start of the fair, so I could take a tour around the city and the Saint-Émilion area.
I visited the Cité du Vin in Bordeaux. It's a multimedia museum on the wine history.
About Saint-Émilion area, I walked through the vineyards, I visited the village of Saint-Émilion and I saw some famous French wineries. I had also the opportunity to visit Château Figeac, so amazing! It produces one of the best Bordeaux wines in the whole world.
I think that I'll come back soon. That's a wonderful region!
