Oregon Coast Scenic Steamin'
2-6-2 No. 25 works its nearly empty train over a Tillamook Bay coastal causeway on a surprisingly warm and sunny northern Oregon day in July, 2012. The locomotive's not working very hard on the flat route, so every clank of the train is audible over the almost-idling engine's sounds. Trains pull and push over this line between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, Oregon.
NS Savannah at Patriot's Point
NS Savannah, the world's first nuclear powered merchant vessel was displayed at Patriot's Point in Charleston, South Carolina when I visited in April, 1992.
Note the elderly Cooper River bridges in the background that have since been replaced by a fine new suspension bridge. Note too that the tour boat announcer is mistaken when he says that NS Savannah was built in Savannah. She was actually built in Camden, New Jersey.
NorthWest Traction Group: One More Time
After nearly 40 years of operating their HO scale modular traction layout at model railroad shows in the Midwest, several charter members of the NorthWest Traction Group reluctantly announced their impending retirement. But before bowing out, they agreed to take the fairly large and elaborate layout on the road one more time to Trainfest 2015.
NWTG has participated in this annual show, held at the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, since 1984. As Trainfest grew in size and popularity, so did the modular traction layout. Over the years, the layout accumulated many accolades through awards and magazine articles. This video documents the setup, operation and takedown of the layout over the course of the three-day weekend, spotlighting the Group's teamwork and camaraderie (though similar to our popular 2009 YouTube video, NorthWest Traction Group Goes to Trainfest, it is not a remake).
Setup took place on Friday, November 13. Most Trainfest exhibitors display in the enormous Wisconsin Expo Center (this video includes a brief visit to the latter), but NWTG chose to be in the nearby Wisconsin Products Pavilion (aka 'The Trolley Barn'), which provides better vehicle access. The show was open to the public from 9 AM until 5 PM on both Saturday and Sunday.
The NorthWest Traction Group is not a club but a bunch of guys who hail mostly from the Chicago area. All modules were built to interface standards so they can be connected and configured any number of ways. The various sections assemble into a single-track mainline with passing sidings and end loops. For 2015, the track plan featured two independent routes linked by an interchange track. To answer the most frequently-asked question, yes, the trains do get their power from the overhead wire.
Even though a symbolic last run was staged Sunday afternoon shortly before disassembling the layout and loading the modules onto vehicles for the trip home, some of the Group have expressed interest in continuing to attend shows in the future with a more modest layout.
