The Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum HD
The oldest house of New York City - (is older than you think)
New York City can trace back its roots to the free and liberal city of Amsterdam in the 17th century. The Wyckoff House is the only house in New York City that is from that period, when the Republic of the Netherlands ruled part of North America.
The house is one of the most tangible reminders of a period of American history that has largely been forgotten. New Amsterdam (1625-1664) was a colony in which people from all over the world used trade to make something better of themselves.
New Netherland Now is a project that wants to shine a light on this period of American history, which has only recently been uncovered in its true detail by historians. It shows an alternative origin story for the United States full of inspiring lessons and dire warnings.

A tradition of old world faming continues at one of the oldest houses in New York City. The house, built around 1652, became the City's first landmark in 1965.
The life of Pieter Claesen Wyckoff is an American success story. In 1637, he arrived in America, an illiterate indentured servant. He eventually became a magistrate, successful farmer and the wealthiest citizen of New Amersfoot, which later became the town of Flatlands. The father of 11 children, Wyckoff settled a tract of land once inhabited by the Canarsie Indians. Wyckoff's descendants lived in the house until 1901. The Wyckoff House Foundation bought back the house in 1961 and donated it to the City in 1969. Saved from ruin, it was extensively restored in 1982.
The Matriarch -- New York's Oldest Structure
The story of the Wyckoff House Museum, the oldest surviving structure in New York City. The dutch farmhouse, located in East Flatbush, was built in 1652. Here, Senior Docent Lucy Chin tells us why it matters.

More info via Wikipedia:
Homelessness in the United States of America is an area of concern for social service providers, government officials, policy professionals, and society at large. Although the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in January 2012 annual point-in-time count found that 633,782 people across the United States were homeless, other counts vary widely. In a recent approximation, an estimated 1.6 million unduplicated persons used transitional housing or emergency shelters. Of these people, approximately 1/3 are members of households with children, a nine percent increase since 2007. Another approximation is from a study done by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, which states that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2007). With 2007 as a benchmark, the data from the report showed a 6.8 percent decline in homelessness among individuals, a 3.7 percent decline of homeless families, a 13.1 percent decline of the unsheltered homeless population, and a 19.3 percent decline in persons experiencing chronic homelessness. Determining even an approximate count of homeless people is quite difficult, even more so when it comes to those that are under the age of 21. Adolescents, teens, and runaways seem to fall through the crack; so many go unaccounted for. Many of the youth living on the streets do not want to be counted for various reasons. Therefore, agencies that do count, use different methods and techniques that make an accurate count that much more difficult.
One out of 50 children or 1.5 million children in America will be homeless each year. In 2013 that number jumped to one out of 30 children, or 2.5 million. There were an estimated 57,849 homeless veterans estimated in the United States during January 2013; or 12 percent of all homeless adults. Just under 8 percent of homeless U.S. veterans are female. Texas, California and Florida have the highest numbers of unaccompanied homeless youth under the age of 18; comprising 58% of the total homeless under 18 youth population.
Because of turnover in the homeless population, the total number of people who experience homelessness for at least a few nights during the course of a year is thought to be considerably higher than point-in-time counts. A 2000 study estimated the number of such people to be between 2.3 million and 3.5 million. According to Amnesty International USA, vacant houses outnumber homeless people by five times.

With an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698 distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2), New York City is also the most densely populated major city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass and one of the world's most populous megacities, with an estimated 20,320,876 people in its 2017 Metropolitan Statistical Area and 23,876,155 residents in its Combined Statistical Area. A global power city, New York City has been described uniquely as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world, and exerts a significant impact upon commerce, entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, art, fashion, and sports. The city's fast pace has inspired the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy.Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. New York City is home to more than 3.2 million residents born outside the United States, the largest foreign-born population of any city in the world. In 2017, the New York metropolitan area produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of US$1.73 trillion. If greater New York City were a sovereign state, it would have the 12th highest GDP in the world.New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace. In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entrepreneurship, social tolerance, and environmental sustainability, and as a symbol of freedom and cultural diversity. Many districts and landmarks in New York City are well known, with the city having three of the world's ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013 and receiving a record 62.8 million tourists in 2017. Several sources have ranked New York the most photographed city in the world. Times Square, iconic as the world's heart and its Crossroads, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Robert Sietsema: New York in a Dozen Dishes | Talks at Google
In New York in a Dozen Dishes, longtime restaurant critic Robert Sietsema (currently, ny.eater.com) offers a gastronomic portrait of the city through the lens of 13 dishes. Some, like fried chicken and pizza, are well-known and universally consumed. Others, like cuy (South American guinea pig) and Pakistani goat brains, are more challenging and obscure. Each dish is described by means of anecdote, historical fact, and personal history. The book also contains recommendations for where to find the best examples of these dishes in the city and surrounding areas, and a recipe that would allow you to make each dish – though it’s really easier just to eat them in restaurants.
Robert Sietsema was born in Michigan; grew up in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Dallas; went to college in Austin and grad school in Madison, Wisconsin, before discovering that he always belonged in New York. He’s worked for Gourmet and the New York Times, is married, lives in Greenwich Village, and has a daughter.
