Hello Friends. Today we are talking about a toy in the form of a Bun. This is the pink bun. Well, I have named him so. In general, it has a name. The official name is Fluffling Babie. Snetterton 1973 Jim Russell Racing School
Snetterton, Norfolk started life as a WWII era RAF airfield and a base for the U.S. 8th Air Force flying B-17 Flying Fortresses into Europe. It has been used as a motor racing facility since the 1950's. These pictures were taken at the Jim Russell Int'l. Racing Drivers School, Snetterton, in June, 1973. I finished 2nd (car 12) in my first school race on the original 2.7 mile airfield circuit which utilized the now defunct Norwich Straight, Hairpin and Home Straight section between Sear Corner and the Esses; the notorious Russell Chicane before the pit entrance was in use as well. The cars were Merlyn Mk 20's and new Mk 24's powered by Scholar 1600 Kent motors, the older Lotus 51's having been retired by this time. Notable instructors were John Kirkpatrick of Scotland (seen in images 1,2 & 3 wearing blue) and Belgian F3 (Team Safir) driver Patrick Neve who later graduated to F1. The chief instructor was John Paine. Other drivers in my group were Bill Follmer (nephew of Can Am champion George Follmer), Eberhard Hahn, Hendrik Labuschagne, David Sheffield, J. Sky Tapp and Manuel Bobbio. The last photo is of Mrs. Bobbio asking if I kept to the 5,500 RPM limit. While I was first across the line in my race, a 30 second penalty for slightly exceeding the rev limit dropped me to 2nd place. Other memories: The Thompson Chequers for a pint and a sandwich (best pub in East Anglia); lovely old Bunwell Manor with it's ancient beam ceilings; the town of Quidenham; visiting the GRD factory, car control lessons on the Brands Hatch skidpan; and our group watching F3 champion James Hunt test the Hesketh March at Snetterton, his first taste of F1 Cosworth power. An unforgettable time for an 18-year-old racing nutter from L.A.
