Part 2: Fort Leonard Wood
Welcome Burly Teacher Friends,
Hello everyone. Day 2 was the day where we actually got to get into the base and visit some very cool things. The day started out in one of the main headquarters (I am guessing) we were briefing on some of the history and information on Fort Leonard Wood as a whole. Also were told about the three MOS specialities they have on the base: Military Police, Chemical Engineers, and Prime Power School Engineers. Altogether there are 26 MOs's in the base.
We started out at the receiving, which is day 0-3.5. They get all their equipment and indoctrinations such as eye care, dental care, hair cuts, and all the clothes, boots, etc. It was a very interesting place seeing all the levels of oh shit what did I just do. Some laughing to hide being scared, some hands in head (WTF did I do), and some seemingly well adjusted.
The second place we got to do was to the Prime Power School and learn about how they use generators to create power. The school is very heavy in math and science and by the end of the course run a power plant producing crazy amounts of kilowatts.
We got to eat with the recruits at lunch which was cool to have them scare their stories. Our group had already finished OSUT (One Station Unit Training) meaning they completed BCT and AIT at the same base. So all around it was 19 weeks of training with the same Drill Sgt.
Lastly we got to see the virtual training simulators and practice with the game VBS-3. It was a full scale training simulator that saves the Army tons of money so they don't have to waste ammo and gas.
And lastly we got to see the Military Police - CID (Criminal Investigations) unit where they training them to deal with murder, rape, and sexual harassment.
Overall it was a good day and at the end it was very evident that education is the key to the US Army's success. They stressed that teachers are the first line of defense. I never really thought of our role in that way, but it does help forge a new perspective.

Part 1: Fort Leonard Wood BCT Ed Tour
Welcome Burly Teacher Friends,
Hello there folks. This is part one in a series of videos I will make with my time in St. Robert, Missouri at Fort Leonard Wood. It is one of 5 places where young recruits complete BCT (Basic Combat Training). It was mostly a day of travel but I wanted to make sure to give everyone the whole experience. I am grateful for the experience to be apart of this trip and I look forward to sharing what I found with my colleagues and students.

US Army Basic Training Fort Leonard Wood - 1986
Fun and nostalgic look at what basic was like before the cold war ended. One of those half canned, half original tapes that video companies use to make and sell to graduating soldiers. This was basic training class D-3-3. It was a mix of engineer, infantry, aviation, and MP MOSs. Started May of 1986.
