Road trip to radicofani, in Tuscany, to visit ancient UNESCO castle site.This powerful fortification was built over a long period of time, starting from 978 onwards, though its origins go even more back in time. Its thick bastions were capable of resisting to the most violent attack, even to artillery fire. The mighty tower, 37 metres high and rebuilt in the last century, offers enchanting endless views all over the Val d’Orcia park and the volcanic Monte Amiata. The panorama is incredibly vast and overwhelming! I found it to be one of the most beautiful views in Tuscany; it reaches as far as the Apennine mountains, and the Lakes Trasimeno and Bolsena. Any part you turn to look, the vastness of the landscape will fill your eye. The ravines below are simply spectacular.

Radicofani part one of two

Not only is Radicofani a wonderful place to visit, it is also a wonderful place to stay. There is a free motorhome parking area with room for three vehicles and with water and waste disposal on site.
The village has a population of just over 1,000 people and boasts a castle which dates back to at least 978CE when it was first documented. The hill on which the castle stands is at 896 metres and offers marvellous vistas in every direction. It has two lines of walls: the external one has a pentagonal shape, while the inner one is triangular, with three ruined towers at each corner and a keep.
Also notable is the Romanesque church of San Pietro, with a nave, housing some works by Andrea della Robbia, Benedetto Buglioni and Santi Buglioni. Also by della Robbia is the precious Madonna with Saints at the high altar of the church of Sant'Agata.

Decima tappa della nostra via Francigena in bici. Si scende la Rocca di Radicofani, si arriva al lago di Bolsena per la campagna laziale e poi si sale ad un'altra rocca, quella dei papi di Montefiascone. Discesa finale fino a Viterbo.
