Altai Krai is a federal subject of Russia . It borders with, clockwise from the west, Kazakhstan , Novosibirsk and Kemerovo Oblasts, and the Altai Republic. The krai's administrative center is the city of Barnaul. As of the 2010 Census, the population of the krai was 2,419,755.By several measures of economic performance, including the average wage, the krai is the poorest region in Russia. The region's politics since the dissolution of the Soviet Union has also been plagued by scandals, with several prominent politicians - including the region's head and the mayor of it's biggest city - dying under suspicious circumstances.
