Today we headed to Bad Gastein to check into our Air BnB. We got there very early, so we were able to explore the town and get our bearings. What a great town!

Bad Gastein day 2
Today we got up and headed up the mountains! We took a lift up to the mountain and walked across the suspension bridge. Then we hiked for a few hours up the other peaks! Wonderful day!

The Gastein Valley has been popular as spa destination due to its thermal springs since the Middle Ages. Emperor Frederick III., Paracelsus, Emperor Franz Joseph and Sisi, and the German Emperor Wilhelm I and Bismarck are just some of the celebrities who sought alleviation of their physical suffering in Bad Gastein. The proof of radon gas in the thermal waters by Marie Curie confirmed the therapeutic effect.
Also the deposits of gold and silver made the valley famous. Mining was conducted from the 16th to the 20th century with varying degrees of success. The radon gallery of Bad Gastein owes its construction to mining.
The town's landmark is the waterfall of the Gastein Ache in the middle of the down town.
In winter,ski sport is the largest source of income for the entire valley.

Das Gasteinertal ist bereits seit dem Mittelalter wegen seiner Thermalquellen als Kurregion bekannt. Kaiser Friedrich III., Paracelsus, Kaiser Franz Josef und Sisi, sowie der deutsche Kaiser Wilhelm I. und Fürst Bismarck sind nur einige der Prominenten, die in Bad Gastein Linderung ihrer körperlichen Leiden suchten. Der Nachweis von Radongas im Thermalwasser durch Marie Curie bestätigte die therapeutische Wirkung.
Auch Vorkommen von Gold und Silber machten das Tal berühmt. Mit wechselndem Erfolg betrieb man hier Bergbau vom 16. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. Ihm verdankt Bad Gastein seinen Heilstollen.

Artists in Residence im Kraftwerk
Vor allem in der Kunstszene hat sich Bad Gastein als kreativer Platz etabliert. Ikrath nennt das eine „I-can-see-clearly-Location“, an der die Verspannung im Kopf weggeht. Sammler und Galeristen besuchten den Ort, mit ihnen viele Künstlerinnen und Künstler. 2010 gründete Ikrath mit Freunden die „sommer.frische.kunst“, bei der junge Künstler aus ganz Europa als „Artists in Residence“ in Bad Gastein arbeiten. Als Kraft-Atelier-Platz dient das Kraftwerk am Fuße des Wasserfalls in Bad Gastein.
Lokales Handwerk trifft internationale Kunst
„Zwei Visionen haben uns vor allem getrieben“, erzählt Ikrath. „Wir wollten keine Aquarell-Malkurse, sondern einen ernsthaften Diskurs über moderne Kunst schaffen. Und die Kunst sollte kein Fremdkörper im Ort sein.“ Sie sollte die Locals in die Projekte einbinden, anregen, selbstverständlich auch aufregen. Das Projekt gelang: Handwerker aus Bad Gastein öffnen seither den Künstlern ihre Werkstätten. „Das sind Brücken, Seilschaften und Symbiosen von Tradition und Moderne“, sagt Ikrath. „Meine neue Version der Friendsweek.“
