Bad Karlshafen is a baroque, thermal salt spa town in the district of Kassel, in Hesse, Germany. It has 2300 inhabitants in the main ward of Bad Karlshafen, and a further 1900 in the medieval village of Helmarshausen. It is situated at the confluence of the Diemel and Weser rivers, 15 km south of Höxter, and 37 km north of Kassel.

1. Externsteine Horn Bad Meinberg
The Externsteine [ˈɛkstɐnʃtaɪnə] is a distinctive sandstone rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest, near the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg in the Lippe district of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The formation is a tor consisting of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. In a popular tradition going back to an idea proposed to Hermann Hamelmann in 1564, the Externsteine are identified as a sacred site of the pagan Saxons, and the location of the Irminsul idol reportedly destroyed by Charlemagne; there is however no archaeological evidence that would confirm the site's use during the relevant period. A look around Burg Blankenheim - a DJH German Castel Hostel

This is a little look around the German DJH Youth Hostel Burg Blankenheim which overlooks the village of Blankenheim in Germany. It's a simple but atmospheric castle hostel, close to the Eifel National Park.

The best thing about the Eifel is there is nothing here, says our host at Hostel Blankenheim. Well, for a place with nothing it kept us pretty busy. We found ourselves biking field and forest around the National Park, cheering on classic cars at a world famous racetrack at Nürburgring and racing around a castle that was built as a display of power and wealth but now offers charming hostel accommodation. Check out the video for a taste of the character of Jugendherberge Burg Blankenheim.

The German Youth Hostel Association (DJH Jugendherbergen in Deutschland) has a selection of hostels set in castles. We took a road trip across Germany to check them out and made this series of videos to give you a glimpse inside.
