On Sunday, July 20th Brian and I decided to get adventurous and go hiking in the Pyrenees Mountains. The Pyrenees create a natural boarder between France and Spain. The mountains extend for about 270 miles from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean Sea. The first half of the adventure was getting to the mountains. After spending a couple of hours doing research on the internet, translating a French guidebook about the Pyrenees to English, and talking to the people at the front desk, Brian and I decided to take our first road trip. We left at about 9 am and drove for about 2 hours to a small city called Oo. On the way we were very surprised to learn how easy navigating in France really is. We had detailed directions that told us of upcoming tolls and even speed cameras. The European road signs direct you to major cities. You navigate by understanding which major city the highway you are on goes to. You follow these signs until you see the smaller city that you are trying to navigate to. The whole system works pretty well. We ended up using two different types of toll systems. The first one was like a typical US toll, where you pay the amount when you approach the gate. The second toll was different because you pulled a ticket at the first gate and paid the ticket when you exited the interstate. On our way to the city Oo the views were beautiful. As we got closer to the mountains we drove through cute mountain towns, saw snow capped peaks, and could hear mountain run off streams passing near the road. When we arrived in Oo we started the hour climb to Lac d'Oo (lake of Oo). One of Brian's co-workers recommended this hike because of the waterfall at the end. As we started our hike we very quickly realized that we were going to be climbing up the mountain most of the way. The first fourth of the hike was a steady uphill climb that slowly brought us up into the mountains. As we got higher our views got better and better. The remaining three-fourths of our climb was made up of switchbacks and was really pretty steep. Brian and I realized why everyone around us had special hiking sticks as the terrain got steeper and steeper. As we climbed we crossed many streams of water made of melting snow from the mountain tops. After an exhausting hour climb up we arrived at Refuge d'Oo, which was a restaurant located on Lake d'Oo. We could hear the waterfall, and could see the vast lake that lay ahead of us. When we climbed the final couple of hills we were taken aback by the majesty of this lake and waterfall. Words cannot describe the beauty of this place. The waterfall is 273 meters (895 feet) tall and falls into a large blue lake. We were in a valley between very large mountains with some of them being snowcapped. Brian and I took in the view and found a quiet rock away from other visitors and enjoyed our picnic lunch. Our long climb up was totally worth the view we had. We both decided that we have never seen anything like it and we will truly treasure this memory together. On the way down the mountain we definitely worked different muscles. Both of us felt muscle spasms as we walked down the mountain. The views on the way down were gorgeous as well. After stretching and resting we decided to head back to Toulouse. Our drive back was even easier than our drive to Lac d'Oo. The signs for Toulouse started within 15 minutes of our drive since Toulouse was the closest major city. On our way we stopped at a French rest stop and we were both very surprised at what we found. Brian found stalls that had no urinals in them. After wondering what he should do he realized that the men were just going on the wall. Traversing Spain Twice part 2 of 3 - Backpacking Across the Pyrenees by Francis Tapon
PART 2: Francis Tapon continues backpacking across the Pyrenees. Having just left Aneto, we pick up the story as he goes to El Monte Perdido. Then the trail slowly descends and, along the way, crosses two popular places where El Camino Santiago goes over the Pyrenees. One place is Puerto Somport and the other is St. Jean Pied-de-Port and Roncesvalles. That's where he officially begins El Camino Santiago, but first, he has to complete the Pyrenees tranverse. So he continues until he arrives to the Atlantic Ocean at Handaye, France. He celebrates by touching the water, and then hikes south to rejoin El Camino Santiago, which you can see in Part 3.
WATCH PART 1 where Francis Tapon starts in Cap de Creus, in Spain and then goes to Banyuls-sur-Mer, France. From there, he starts to climb up into the Pyrenees, in a trip that will take him across Spain twice. In this segment, he goes to Andorra and then to Mt. Aneto, the tallest mountain in the Pyrenees. I followed the GR11 40% of the time, the HRP 40% of the time, and the GR10 20% of the time.
