Arras is a city in northern France. The Carrière Wellington is a network of quarry tunnels used by soldiers during WWI. North of the city, surrounded by lush countryside, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial honors the Canadian soldiers killed during the war. In town, the cobbled Place des Héros has buildings with Flemish facades, including the Town Hall and belfry. The Abbey of St. Vaast houses a fine arts museum.
The capital of the historic Artois region has a strong Flemish accent, clear in the names, architecture, food and art. The gabled houses on Place des Héros and Grand-Place could easily be in Belgium or the Netherlands, while the fine arts museum has a bounty of Flemish and Dutch baroque painting.
The First World War raged in this region and there are constant reminders of the conflict a century later: Metres below your feet in Arras is an old labyrinth of chalk tunnels where the citizens took shelter, but also where Allied forces coordinated the Battle of Arras in 1917. An then just outside the city are memorials, cemeteries and thought-provoking museums.
An unexpected gem of a city, Arras (the final 's' is pronounced), the former capital of Artois, is worth seeing mainly for its exceptional ensemble of Flemish-style arcaded buildings – the main squares are especially lovely at night – and two subterranean WWI sites. The city makes a good base for visits to the Battle of the Somme memorials.
The city of Arras is famous for its two gems that are the Grand Place (main square) and the Héros square. Surrounded by 155 houses of Flemish Baroque style, these two paved squares are magnificent and make an enchanting scene! Very lively, the Héros square, lined with covered galleries home to fine food shops and cafés, is dominated by the belfry of the town hall. The former Saint-Vaast Benedictine abbey house a Fine Art museum dedicated to painting and sculpture.
All of the belfries in the historic County of Flanders are listed as UNESCO sites, and that goes for the proud one on Place des Héros. A lift will get you most of the way to a panoramic viewpoint, and after that you have to scale another 40 steps on a metallic spiral stairway for a bird’s eye view 75 metres above the centre of Arras. The belfry is in the flamboyant gothic style and has been rebuilt twice since it was completed in 1554, first to correct structural faults in 1840 and then after damage in the First World War.

The Classic Townhouses on Ile-Saint-Louis
Dating back to the seventeenth century, the island's buildings are for the most part townhouses built for members of the rich middle class, many of them officials who worked for Louis XIV. Since those times, the island has had many illustrious residents such as the poet Baudelaire, physicist Marie Curie and Voltaire. In the 1920s it was a favorite haunt of Hemingway.
Definition of Hôtel
Many historic buildings in France have the word Hôtel in their names. This does not mean they are actually hotels; in French hotel often refers to a prestigious single family residence or mansion.
The Hôtel Lauzun (17 quai d'Anjou)
The Hôtel Lauzun is just such a mansion. One of the most beautiful in all of Paris, the mansion is famous for two things: its exquisite baroque interior and its later residents. You can take a guided tour of the mansion every Tuesday. Baudelaire lived here while writing some of the poems of his famous Flowers of Evil (Les Fleurs du mal).
3 quai d'Anjou
The house at 3 quai d'anjou was designed by and the personal residence of Louis Le Vau.
The Hôtel Lambert (1 quai d'Anjou)
Another of Paris' finest mansions is the Hôtel Lambert. In the nineteenth century, the Polish government bought the mansion and welcomed Polish exiles such as the musician Chopin and the poet Adam Mickiewicz, together with their French friends. This mansion had a large garden, which was unusual for a mansion on the island, as there was so little space.
24-26 quai de Bethune - Pompidou Residence
The building at 24-26 quai de Bethune was built on the site of a beautiful mansion also designed by Louis Le Vau. All that is left of the old mansion are the door panels, but they are considered the loveliest doors on the island. This is where the late president of France, Georges Pompidou, lived.
The Polish Library and Adam Mickiewicz Museum (6 quai d'Orléans)
The Polish Library Building also houses three museums in one, the first devoted to the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, the second to Chopin, and the third to artist Boleslas Biegas. It can be visited on Thursdays.

L'Eglise Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile
The Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile church, designed once again by Le Vau was dedicated to King Louis IX, who after his death was made a saint. The front, hemmed in by buildings, hides a white interior, highly decorated with gilt, and filled with works of art and other treasures. It is a splendid setting for the many concerts given here throughout the year.

The Old Lille is an area located north of Lille . It is the richest area in previous constructions in the xix th century. It still retains many paved streets and some traces of the canals that crisscrossed the city in past centuries. Until the First World War , the name of Vieux-Lille was attributed to all the part of the city prior to the 1858 enlargement, that is to say the part bordered on the west by the boulevard de la Liberty and to the south by the boulevard Louis XIV. During the First World War, around the Rue de Bethune, the train station and Molinel the street are destroyed, the Palais Rihour ( xviii th - xix th centuries) was burned.
The destroyed areas are reconstructed according to the fashion of the thirties, Art Deco around the rue du Molinel, neo-regionalist rue Faidherbe and rue de Bethune. In the 1960s and 1970s, the destruction of the popular district of Saint-Sauveur , makes the Old Lille the last testimony of the architecture of the city before the industrial revolution .
The north of the city center remains the only old part of Lille totally preserved. In fact, it escapes modernization and, as a result, is increasingly neglected by the most privileged inhabitants. It is probably from this period that the name of Vieux-Lille has shifted to this single perimeter. District of immigrants and families until the 1980s , trailing a bad reputation, he escaped a project of fast track in its center. On the contrary, it has been restored under the successive mandates of Pierre Mauroyand today has become a commercially very dynamic neighborhood. There are many bars, restaurants, and various shops, including luxury. Since its rehabilitation, the price of real estate has continued to increase, renewing almost its entire population and resulting in a rapid gentrification of the neighborhood.
If Lille has its origins in Old Lille, in the vicinity of the Notre-Dame de la Treille cathedral , most of what is called Vieux-Lille today is not the oldest of the city. A whole section of Vieux-Lille was built much later than the historic core: the roads north of rue du Pont-Neuf and rue Négrier date from the extension of 1670 decided by Vauban after joining the France of Louis XIV . They are characterized by their linear layout and their regular plan.
The streets, more flexible, located at the junction of Old Lille and the city center and around the cathedral are, however, among the oldest in Lille: rue de la Clef, rue de la Grande-Chaussée , Rue des Chats-Bossus, Place aux Onions , Rue Basse , etc. Most of the streets reflect the pace had Lille in the course of the xviii th century, when the architectural style of type Lille prospered and declined along rows of identical houses in the proportions and rhythms and different in the details of the decorations.

Les maisons de ville classique sur l'Ile-Saint-Louis
Datant du XVIIe siècle, les bâtiments de l'île sont pour la plupart des maisons construite pour les membres de la riche bourgeoisie, beaucoup d'entre eux étant les fonctionnaires qui ont travaillé pour Louis XIV.

Driving to D-Day Trailer
Sixteen veteran vehicles cross the world -- and the continent of Europe - to be at the D-Day anniversary. They drive from Istanbul in Turkey across the whole of Europe in military vehicles from the Second World War, a journey of commemoration with visits to the battlefields of Europe that mean so much to the ANZACS.
Led by legendary Queensland adventurer Lang Kidby, the convoy of collectors spend two months on an epic expedition. After shipping their beloved trucks from Down Under they start driving in Istanbul and pay a visit to Gallipoli. Then it's across the Mediterranean to Greece and the site of the great battle for Crete where so many Australians and New Zealanders were killed or captured. From there they go into Italy, Switzerland and France before finally getting to Normandy in time for the anniversary of D-Day.
These lovingly restored vehicles make a spectacular journey with their dedicated owners reflecting on vital locations and events from the Second World War.

... with loss of life -- people trying to put out the blaze. The church is restored and active, but the decorative features and some other things are 20th c.
I had just arrived in Arras, in Pas-de-Calais, Northern France. Boasting the most beautiful central plaza in France (and there's at at least one more adjacent!) I started walking around, looking for Le Musée des Beaux Arts d'Arras in the L'Abbaye Saint-Vaast, which dates back to the 7th c. I was amused to see the old red British phoneboxes the city chose, and although some street lights seemed to be entirely missing, overall, the fixtures in public in this place were all custom-designed and very well done. They seem to try to make everything pretty here, but in quite a sedate, yet laid-back way. A grey but pleasant Sunday afternoon in April, it was 15 degrees C and there had been only sparse rain instead of the heavier showers forecast.
France is usually closed for business on Sundays, but this city, which is actually fairly large, had a lot of people out and I saw very few empty commercial spaces. Had I not enjoyed a French picnic lunch in Lille at their modern art museum's park, I would have had quite a few restaurant choices here -- that's unusual for a Sunday even in Paris.
I hope you like this random look at a Northern French town, with its ch'ti culture and almost-Belgian feel to it. Were I a drinker, I'd certainly have had a Flemish coffee, (those are spiked), or a Belgian beer, or just a baby-shot of the famous Calvados!
France, especially in the North near Belgium, was devastated during WWI. In cities such as Soissons, I swear you can still sense the blood, the pain. You drive on the roads and see cemetery after cemetery of war dead -- Dutch, Belgian, French, British, and so on. I live just outside Paris, and moved there 20 years ago. I recall an entire neighborhood in my city had to be immediately evacuated for a couple of days -- someone found a huge WWI bomb, only slightly buried -- and it was still live and very powerful.
Arras, France is in Pas-de-Calais, I repeat, and you can get there from Paris by train, of course -- I think it's the last stop on an SNCF commuter train line, actually. It's far from Paris -- WELL over 200 kilometers -- but worth the trip. Style and flair. There's nothing square or backwater about Arras -- it's calm and tidy, yes -- but don't mistake the relaxed denizens as being out of it or to have any cobwebs on them.
The city hall (Hôtel de Ville) looks finer than most important Gothic cathedrals, and there are extraordinary murals inside. Sundays are usually closed in France, but I saw so many cafés, tobacconists, newsagents, restaurants, bakeries, pastry shops and bars open, people walking, children, and very, very few places up for sale or for rent. I saw a lovely gîte for rent -- a furnished two-story stone cottage (city house, very old) with a little sign in the window -- 4 to 6 people can be accommodated easily there. I stay in gîtes a lot -- furnished houses or flats, rural or town/village/city -- and they can be a great way to get to know a place a bit more as a resident than a hotel guest (I also like to cook local fare).
