Just a few miles from the Italian border in Switzerland, there is a beautiful nine arched spiral viaduct.
The Brusio spiral viaduct forms part of the Bernina Railway section between Brusio and Campascio, and are about 55 KM from St. Moritz. The Brusio spiral viaduct is a single-track nine-arched stone spiral railway viaduct. A signature structure of the World Heritage-listed Bernina railway, it is located near Brusio, in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, and was built to limit the railway's gradient at that location within its specified maximum of 7%. It is known as Viadotto elicoidale di Brusio in Italian & Kreisviadukt Brusio in German.
Travelled from Chur to Tirano and back within a day, the view on Bernina Express was simply STUNNING! You might think that it may be too much within a day but if you are a nature lover, this train ride will provide many awestruck moments of the magnificent mountains and turquoise lakes.

The Bernina Express runs from Chur through the Swiss Alps to Tirano just south of the border between Switzerland and Italy.
The trains passes many bridges, tunnels and mountain villages. The train itself is spacious, clean and convenient. The windows are large and panoramic.
The Bernina Express stops at small villages like Filisur and Bergun where you find the Albula museum.
At the final station, Tirano, you can take the Bernina Bus to Lugano, one of the most beautiful train rides in the world.

The Gelmer Funicular is a funicular railway in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. It links a lower terminus at Handegg, in the Haslital with an upper terminus at the Gelmersee lake.
The Gelmerbahn was the steepest funicular in Switzerland and Europe, until the opening of the new Stoos Funicular in 2017.
A monstrous climb of maximum 106 percent gradient indisputably makes this funicular railway the steepest in Europe. Both the ascent and descent in the open carriages are an adventure by themselves.
The Gelmerbahn funicular takes tourists a vertigo-inducing 6,000 feet above sea level to Lake Gelmer and while the journey might be slow it's not for the faint-hearted.

Passo San Boldo is a mountain pass located between the cities of Trichiana and Tovena (Cison di Valmarino) in Veneto, Italy, at an elevation of 706 m (2,316 ft) that lies in the northern reaches of the Italian Alps. The most challenging part of the climb is a short stretch of 700m including 7 hairpin turns. It’s one of the famous hairpinned roads in the world. The road still remains an adrenaline-pumping journey and is definitely not for the faint of lungs, heart, or legs. The 17km route goes from Trichiana (in the Belluna Valley), at an altitude of 329m, to Tóvena (in the Val Moreno), at an altitude of 272m, through an altitude of 706 m. The drive is definitely worth it. The mountain pass is named the SP 635 and only one lane is drivable, the traffic is controlled by several sets of lights. There is a speed limit of 30 km/h (19 mph) and a height limit of 3.2 m (10.5 ft.), after buses were frequently stuck in the tunnel. The five tunnels blasted into the rock with hairpin turns or loops, and six bridges. The Austrians, in fact, needed a direct route with the Piave line and, employing a total of 7,000 workers, mostly austoungaric soldiers, Italian, Russian and Bosnian prisoners, and with the help of the local population, they realized the six hairpin bends and the five tunnels that still today constitute the last part of the San Boldo canal ... known as The 100 Day Road. Bernina Express: Tirano, Italy - St. Moritz, Switzerland
This is a great train ride with spectacular view all the way. When we got to the top of summit, just wild what we saw. Snow peaked mountains, ice covered summit lakes, skiers skying past the train. Really glad the weather was on our side. Sometimes, It could be a whole trip in the clouds with nothing to look at.
