The wine regions of Bordeaux are a large number of wine growing areas, differing widely in size and sometimes overlapping, which lie within the overarching wine region of Bordeaux, centred on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole area of the Gironde department of Aquitaine.
The Bordeaux region is naturally divided by the Gironde Estuary into a Left Bank area which includes the Médoc and Graves and a Right Bank area which includes the Libournais, Bourg and Blaye.
The Médoc is itself divided into Haut-Médoc (the upstream or southern portion) and Bas-Médoc (the downstream or northern portion, often referred to simply as Médoc).
There are various sub-regions within the Haut-Médoc, including St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux and the less well known areas of AOC Moulis and Listrac.
Graves includes the sub-regions of Pessac-Léognan and Sauternes (among others), and Sauternes in turn includes the sub-region of Barsac.
The Libournais includes the sub-regions of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol (among others).
There is an additional wine region of Entre-Deux-Mers, so called because it lies between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, which combine to form the Gironde.
This region contains several less well known sweet wine areas of Cadillac and St. Croix de Mont.
All of these regions (except the Libournais) have their own appellation and are governed by Appellation d'origine contrôlée laws which dictate the permissible grape varieties, alcohol level, methods of pruning and picking, density of planting and appropriate yields as well as various winemaking techniques.
Bordeaux wine labels will usually include the region on the front if all the grapes have been harvested in a specific region and the wine otherwise complies with the AOC requirements.
There are about 50 AOCs applicable to the Bordeaux region.
Both red and white Bordeaux wines are almost invariably blended.
The permissible grape varieties in red Bordeaux are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
While wine making styles vary, a rule of thumb is that the Left Bank is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon based with the Right Bank being more Merlot based.
The Graves area produces both red wine (from the grapes previously mentioned) and white wine from the Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes.
The area of Sauternes (including Barsac) is known for its botrytized dessert wines.

Quiberon is a town and a peninsula on the southern coast of the Finistère department of western Brittany, near Carnac. The peninsula is 14 kilometres long and connected to mainland France by little more than a bank of sand with a road across it, with the entrance to the peninsula being overlooked by the 19th century Fort de Penthièvre. Although there are few important monuments in the town of Quiberon it is pleasant to explore: your visit will be centred around the port and on the long sandy beach in the town itself. This main beach is almost one kilometre long and called La Grande Plage.
Behind the beach you can see various grand villas dating from the time that Quiberon became established as a resort at the end of the 19th century, when trainlines first arrived here, as well as some more recent developments. In the town behind the beach you can see typical low Brittany whitewashed houses and shops, and the 12th century Church of Notre-Dame de Locmaria. There is also a small museum dedicated to the history of the Quiberon peninsula, called the Maison du Patrimoine (on rue de Port Haliguen in the town centre). There are two ports here: Port Maria, where the fishing fleet is based and from where you can take excursions to the nearby islands, and Port Haliguen, which is the port for pleasure boats. The castle you can see on a headland is called Chateau Turpault and was built in 1910 - it is not open to the public.
The Quiberon peninsula is a very popular seaside resort in the summer, and has some attractive beaches on the sheltered eastern coast. The most popular beaches (apart from the beach in Quiberon town) are those at Saint-Pierre and Penthievre. At Saint-Pierre-de-Quiberon you can also visit the menhirs (the town lies at the southern end of the 'Coast of megaliths' which runs south from Carnac on to the peninsula).
Head to the most southerly point on the peninsula, called the Pointe du Conguel, for the best view across the to the islands in Quiberon Bay. Pointe de Percho at the north-west of the peninsula is also well worth visiting for the views across to the islands of Belle-Ile and Groix.
The western coast of the peninsula is altogether more dramatic and a popular site with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. While the coast here is very pleasant to explore on foot or by bike, there is also a road that follows this western part of Quiberon and incorporates numerous stopping places, so it is still easy to enjoy the scenery. Include Kervihan, Kerné and Kerniscop for some of the most dramatic scenery. The other main reason that Quiberon attracts visitors is because ferries to the popular islands of Belle-Ile, Ile de Houat and Ile de Hoedic leave from the port here.

Cadillac Ranch where people are still getting their kicks on Route 66
Standing along Route 66 west of Amarillo, Texas, Cadillac Ranch was invented and built by a group of art-hippies imported from San Francisco. They called themselves The Ant Farm, and their silent partner was Amarillo billionaire Stanley Marsh 3. He wanted a piece of public art that would baffle the locals, and the hippies came up with a tribute to the evolution of the Cadillac tail fin. Ten Caddies were driven into one of Stanley Marsh 3's fields, then half-buried, nose-down, in the dirt (supposedly at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza). They faced west in a line, from the 1949 Club Sedan to the 1963 Sedan de Ville, their tail fins held high for all to see on the empty Texas panhandle.
That was in 1974. People would stop along the highway, walk out to view the cars -- then deface them or rip off pieces as souvenirs. Stanley Marsh 3 and The Ant Farm were tolerant of this public deconstruction of their art -- although it doomed the tail fins -- and eventually came to encourage it.
Decades have passed. The Cadillacs have now been in the ground as art longer than they were on the road as cars. They are stripped to their battered frames, splattered in day-glo paint splooge, barely recognizable as automobiles.
Now Cadillac Ranch is more popular than ever. It's become a ritual site for those who travel The Mother Road. The smell of spray paint hits you from a hundred yards away; the sound of voices chattering in French, German, and UK English makes this one of the most polyglot places between the UN and Las Vegas.
Despite its exposed location in an empty field, Cadillac Ranch seems to give its art-anarchists a sense of privacy and anonymity, like a urinal stall in a men's room. Individual painters take a stance facing one of the cars, then let it fly. Surrounding visitors keep their distance, perhaps less out of courtesy than from a desire to stay clear of the spray cloud.
Tourists are always welcome at Cadillac Ranch. If you bring spray paint, make sure to also bring a camera. Because whatever you create at Cadillac Ranch will probably only last a few hours before it's created over by someone else.
