At an elevation of 1,460 metres , Rocca Calascio is the highest fortress in the Apennines. Built of stone and masonry exclusively for military purposes and intended only to accommodate troops and never as residence for nobles, the fortress overlooks the Plain of Navelli at one of the highest points in the ancient Barony of Carapelle. Construction of the fortress started in the tenth century as a single watchtower. A walled courtyard with four cylindrical towers at the corners around a taller inner tower was added in the thirteenth century. Best freshwater diving spot in the world.
Is this the best freshwater diving site in the world? Located near Capestrano, L'Aquilla in Italy. The lake of Capo d'Acqua is a truly unique diving site. A diver can visit two submerged medieval mills. However, the site is on private property and a permission to dive there is needed.
According to Scubadiving magazine & a other websites, this dive site ranks high in the charts of best freshwater diving.

Remarkable is the visibility of the water. During our visit we had a bad viz according to the local divers. It was 30m (in Summer). During the winter, a visibility of about 60m is possible.
