The Central Region of Malawi, population 5,491,034 , covers an area of 35,592 km². Its capital city is Lilongwe, which is also the national capital. The region has an outlet on Lake Malawi and borders neighbouring countries Zambia and Mozambique. The Chewa people make up the majority of the population today. Of the 27 districts in Malawi, 9 are located within the Central Region They are: Dedza, Dowa, Kasungu, Lilongwe, Mchinji, Nkhotakota, Ntcheu, Ntchisi, and Salima.

    The Kungoni Centre of Culture and Art is a non-profit organization in central Malawi. Kungoni is located in Mua, a village in the Dedza district, about 60 km from Salima. Kungoni is both easily accessible, being about two hours drive on bitumen from Lilongwe and three from Blantyre. Kungoni sits a little above the lake plain, with views to the lake in one direction and the African Rift Valley escarpment in the other. The site is landscaped and planted as a botanic garden with a variety of tropical trees and shrubs.

    Chongoni Rock Art Area is located in the Central Region of Malawi consisting of 127 sites in the forested hills of the Malawi plateau with depictions of rock art and paintings of the farmer community of the Late Stone Age and the Iron Age period. This ancient record of the cultural history is in vogue even now.The rock arts are in granite formations and consist of art depictions attributed to the hunter gatherer community of BaTwa who lived here during the stone age period, and of the farming community of Chewa who are traced to the Iron Age period.     The Maula Cathedral or simply Cathedral of Lilongwe, is the name given to a religious building belonging to the Catholic Church and is located in the town of Lilongwe the capital and largest city of the African country of Malawi. Administratively it is included in the Central Region, near the M1 highway and the Civo Stadium. The cathedral follows the Roman or Latin rite and serves as the headquarters of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lilongwe which was created as a diocese by Pope John XXIII in 1959 and got its present status in 2011 under the bula Quotiescumque Evangelii of the Pope Benedict XVI. It is under the pastoral responsibility of Archbishop Tarcisius Gervazio Ziyaye.
