Mount Lofty is the highest point in the southern Mount Lofty Ranges. It is located about 15 km east of the Adelaide city centre in South Australia, and has panoramic views of the city and the Adelaide plains to the west, and of the Picadilly Valley to the east. The summit can be accessed by road from the South Eastern Freeway at Crafers, and from the eastern suburbs via Greenhill Road and the Mount Lofty Scenic Route. The more enthusiastic can walk up the gully from Waterfall Gully, through the Cleland Conservation Park and from Chambers Gully. The track from Waterfall Gully to the summit is a 4 km uphill trek and one of Adelaide's most popular exercise circuits so the park at the bottom is often busy. Heavy Freight Road and Rail Transit in Greater Adelaide morning rush period Video 2015

It is reported that half of the heavy freight entering Adelaide is actually in Transit to other destinations.
Of this heavy freight between the East Coast and the West Coast, 80% is being carried by Rail.

The problem is the current route between Melbourne & the West Coast takes all the transit freight through Greater Adelaide.

The Mt Barker to Crafers section of the Adelaide Hills is a choke point for both Road and Rail Transit. The complex topography has both Road & Rail in very close proximity.
The numerous single rail tunnels means freight trains have to spend consideratble time in passing loops.
The roadway also has a tunnel.
The steep slope of the Hill Face Zone is particularly dangerous for heavy freight. Brakes can fail, causing terrifying results for other vehicles on the road.
