Parking is available for walking along the old railway path and up to the top of the crag, and there is a picnic area. The area has been a well-known rock climbing venue since the 1890s. A large number of hard lines were put up by some of the best climbers of the 1980s and 1990s. The two best-known climbs are featured in the documentary Hard Grit. Derby Arboretum is a public park and arboretum in the city of Derby, England, located about 1 mile south of the city centre in the Rose Hill area. It was opened in 1840, following the donation of the land by local philanthropist Joseph Strutt, and to designs by John Claudius Loudon. It was the first publicly owned, landscaped, urban, recreational park in England. After many years of neglect, the Arboretum was extensively refurbished in the early 21st century with the aid of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of almost £5 million. It is listed as Grade II* on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England.

The National Forest is an environmental project in central England run by The National Forest Company. From the 1990s, 200 square miles of north Leicestershire, south Derbyshire and southeast Staffordshire have been planted in an attempt to blend ancient woodland with newly planted areas to create a new national forest. It stretches from the western outskirts of Leicester in the east to Burton upon Trent in the west, and is planned to link the ancient forests of Needwood and Charnwood. In January 2018, the U.K. government unveiled plans to create a new Northern Forest stretching from Liverpool to Hull. It will shadow the path of the east-west M62 motorway.
