Fès-Boulemane was formerly one of the sixteen regions of Morocco from 1997 to 2015. It was situated in northern Morocco. It covered an area of 19,795 km² and had a population of 1,808,295 . The capital was Fès. In 2015, it expanded Taounate and Taza Provinces ; and Meknès Prefecture and El Hajeb and Ifrane Provinces to form the Region of Fès-Meknès.

    The University of al-Qarawiyyin, also written Al Quaraouiyine or Al-Karaouine , is a university located in Fez, Morocco. It is the oldest existing, continually operating higher educational institution in the world according to UNESCO and Guinness World Records and is sometimes referred to as the oldest university. It was founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859 with an associated madrasa, which subsequently became one of the leading spiritual and educational centers of the historic Muslim world.
