Erigée pour représenter l'Amérique et ses valeurs, la statue de la liberté est une oeuvre française. Le sculpteur Auguste Bartholdi imaginant une statue qu'il baptise La Liberté éclairant le monde, en lance l'idée en 1865. Les Français l'offriront aux Américains à l'occasion du centenaire de la naissance de l'Amérique. Le principal collaborateur de Bartholdi est Gustave Eiffel. Il décide que la statue doit être à la fois légère et flexible, pouvant ainsi osciller au gré du vent et résister aux éléments naturels. L'inauguration du monument a lieu en 1886, et c'est grâce aux techniques sophistiquées imaginées par Gustave Eiffel, que la statue a pu résister au climat agressif du port de New York pendant plus d'un siècle.
