Dunkirk and French Flanders
A short visit over the English Channel to the town of Dunkirk in the French Flanders region of France. We went with Norfolk Line from Dover to Dunkirk direct, a journey which takes just two hours. We also visited Bergues, Gravelines, and Hondschoote. Dunkirk has a great war museum too.

Dartford is the principal town in the Borough of Dartford, Kent, England. It is located 18 miles south-east of Central London, and is situated adjacent to the London Borough of Bexley to its west. To its north, across the Thames estuary, is Thurrock in Essex, which can be reached via the Dartford Crossing and the Dartford Tunnel.
Dartford centre lies in a valley through which the River Darent flows, and where the old road from London to Dover crossed: hence the name, from Darent + ford. Dartford became a market town in medieval times and, although today it is principally a commuter town for Greater London, it has a long history of religious, industrial and cultural importance. It is an important rail hub; the main through-road now by-passes the town itself.
Dartford is twinned with several other towns and cities abroad including Hanau in Germany, Gravelines in France and Namyangju in South Korea.
Dartford has two major buildings concerned with performance art. The Orchard Theatre, located in the town centre, is a fully professional theatre, providing audiences with a large range of drama, dance, music and entertainment. The Mick Jagger Centre, within the grounds of Dartford Grammar School on Shepherds Lane, was completed in 2000 and provides facilities for community arts across a wide region.
Dartford railway station is located in the town centre and is connected to London via three National Rail routes. The first railway London to Dartford connection was the North Kent Line via Woolwich Arsenal in 1849, connecting at Gravesend with the line to the Medway Towns. Later two more lines were built, the Dartford Loop Line through Sidcup, which opened in 1866, and the Bexleyheath Line, which opened in 1895. All the lines were electrified on 6 June 1926.

Fáskrúðsfjörður in East Iceland is a small beautiful fishing village with around 650 inhabitants. The town is famous for its French heritage and has a strong connection to its French counterpart, Gravelines. It is worth while to visit the French Museum and learn more about these historical connections.

The Citadel of Besançon is a 17th-century fortress in Franche-Comté, France. It is one of the finest masterpieces of military architecture designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The Citadel occupies 11 hectares (27 acres) on Mount Saint-Etienne, one of the seven hills that protect Besançon, the capital of Franche-Comté. Mount Saint-Etienne occupies the neck of an oxbow formed by the river Doubs, giving the site a strategic importance that Julius Caesar recognised as early as 58 BC.
The Citadel overlooks the old quarter of the city, which is located within the oxbow, and has views of the city and its surroundings. The fortification is well preserved. Today it is an important tourist site (over a quarter of a million visitors per year) due both to its own characteristics and because it is the site of several museums.
These museums include a museum of the Resistance and deportation, a museum focusing on traditional life in Franche-Comté and the region's archeological history, and a museum of natural history that includes a zoo, an insectarium, an aquarium, vivariums, a noctarium, a climatorium, a pedagogical exhibit on evolution, botanical gardens, and a children's farm. There is also a restaurant and shops. On 7 July 2008, UNESCO listed the Citadel, together with nearby Fort Griffon, as a World Heritage Site. Since 1942, the French Ministry of Culture has listed the Citadel as a Monument historique
In Gallo-Roman times the promontory on which the citadel sits was already used as an acropolis. A wall enclosed a temple, probably dedicated to Jupiter Capitolinus. (Reference to the Roman history of the town is preserved in the town's arms, which show an eagle clasping two Roman columns in its claws.) The fortifications were renovated during the Middle Ages and again in the 16th century.
Between 1668 and 1672, the Spaniards started to construct a modern citadel on the site. Some of the buildings they constructed were incorporated into the subsequent enlargement of the Citadel. The Royal Front (Front meaning bastion or enclosure), and the Relief Front, both include buildings that the Spaniards erected.
The Citadel is built on top of a large syncline on a rectangular field crossed across its width by three successive bastions (enclosures, or fronts) behind which extend three plazas. The whole is surrounded by walls covered by circular paths and punctuated by watchtowers and sentry posts. The walls are up to 15 to 20 metres (49 to 66 ft) high with a thickness between 5 and 6 metres (16 and 20 ft).

The Museum of Art and History of Narbonne , the city's main museum, takes place in the Archbishops' Palace of Narbonne and presents collections of fine arts and decorative arts. He is particularly known for his collections of ancient faience and his remarkable set of orientalist paintings.
It is, with the Archaeological Museum of Narbonne , one of the two main museums of Narbonne. Its collections do not come from a pre-existing fund, but were constituted from 1833 by purchases, donations, legacies and deposits
Fine art collections include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and posters. The painting collection consists of works dating from the xvi th to the xix th century from French schools, Italian, Spanish and Flemish. For ancient painting, we first notice a fine collection of Italian paintings, especially the XVII th and xviii th century but also the Renaissance. Dunkerque: My French Home
For 8 months,I lived and worked in Dunkerque, France. Dunkerque is located on the North Sea in Northern France in the Flemish Region. It is the third largest port in France and it is best known for its role in World War II. While most of the city was destroyed during the war, some buildings still stand. Every year, the city comes alive for Carnaval de Dunkerque, a city tradition.
I fell in love with this seaside city. While the city may not be the picture-perfect France that most people imagine, Dunkerque has its hidden gems and heartwarming people.

Bastille Day (July 14) offered free admission at the Louvre Museum in Paris, so we went; otherwise, it's 12 euros per person. This is the largest art museum in the world and would take several days to see it all. Lines are long and you're a captive consumer once inside (food, beverages and certain other things must be checked or aren't allowed in at all), but it's really quite something.
My parents owned at least one Rembrandt -- etching(s), if I recall correctly, purchased on their one and only trip to England together, during the heat wave/drought of 1976. They, or it (I only remember one clearly) were/was expensive, and I never found out what happened to them/it. Featured in this clip is my favorite Rembrandt painting, LE BOEUF ECORCHE.
I'm available as a private guide in and around Paris. There are many, many museums here which are always free of charge and are more abordable than the Louvre. One advantage of the Louvre, however, is that it's so well-documented (online and in print), you can select a work or type of thing you'd like to see in advance, check a map, and head straight for it. It's hard not to get sidetracked here, obviously. We found a faster line in (only because it was a special free day) and had planned on seeing certain sculptures, but got distracted and never did see them! The first Sunday of every month this and many other attractions are free, so we might try again soon. During heritage days, plan carefully so as to avoid the crowds -- and have a plan B in mind, in case there are just too many people!
