Zuid Limburg - South Limburg, Netherlands
Zuid-Limburg, Limburgs: Zuud-Limburg) is zowel een COROP (statistische) regio als een landstreek (gebied) van Nederland gelegen in de provincie Limburg. De Nederlandse term landstreek, letterlijk vertaald landoppervlak / regio, betekent dat het gebied geen administratieve regio is, maar een gebied dat samenhang vertoont met cultuur en landschap. Met betrekking tot Zuid-Limburg gaat het om het heuvelachtige landschap, met name in het Heuvelland, verzonken steegjes, een overvloed aan kastelen en de Limburgse streektaal die een aanzienlijk deel van de bevolking naast het Nederlands spreekt. De regio bevat ook het hoogste punt boven zeeniveau op het vasteland van Nederland, de Vaalserberg is 322,5 meter (1,058 voet) boven de zeespiegel (het hoogste punt van het hele land is in het eiland Saba van Caribisch Nederland, namelijk Mount Scenery is 887 meter (2910 ft) boven zeeniveau). South Limburg (Dutch: Zuid-Limburg, Limburgish: Zuud-Limburg) is both a COROP (statistical) region as well as a landstreek (area) of the Netherlands located in the province of Limburg. The Dutch term landstreek, literally translated land area/region, means that the area is not an administrative region but an area that displays cohesion with regard to culture and landscape. With regards to South Limburg this deals with its hilly landscape, especially in the Heuvelland region, sunken lanes, an abundance of castles, and the regional language Limburgish spoken by a significant part of the population alongside Dutch. The region also contains the highest point above sea level in mainland Netherlands, the Vaalserberg being 322.5 metres (1,058 ft) above sea level (the highest point of the entire country is in the Caribbean Netherlands' island of Saba, namely Mount Scenery being 887 metres (2,910 ft) above sea level). The region South Limburg in addition, although extended a little further north to Roermond, forms a constituent part of the Euroregion Meuse-Rhine.

At easter, we sped a few days in the Westhoek in Belgium. Lots of sunshine, good food, nice hikes, interesting places.
Remembrance & History, Eurometropolis - Lille, Kortrijk, Tournai - Unravel Travel TV
For many centuries, the frontier zone covered by the Eurometropolis area has been a battlefield of Europe due to its geographical location at the crossroads of nations' destiny. The area has preserved numerous scars as well as an exceptional historical and commemorative heritage. The frontline of the First World War crossed Flanders and the Picardie region. The In Flanders Fields museum in Ypres retraces the history of daily life in the trenches. On the other side of the square, you can read on the walls of the Menenpoort, a memorial gate resembling a Roman triumph, the names of 54.896 soldiers of the British Empire who disappeared during this war. Since 1928, the Last Post can be heard every night at 8 o'clock p.m., echoing under the impressive vaults. In the Region of the Lys, the Flanders Field American cemetery in Waregem and the German military cemetery of Menen are both very important places of remembrance. The fortresses of Bondues and of Seclin, the museum of the resistance in Villeneuve-d'Ascq and the birth house of Charles de Gaulle in Lille also testify of the people's resistance during the Second World War.
Bayernwald (Bayern Wood)
This unique German site is located between the villages of Wijtschate and Voormezele. The site consists of two mine galleries, a mine shaft, a trench system and five bunkers. It is accessed via a footpath which passes through the restored network of trenches. A series of information panels give details of the events which took place here and explain what life at the front was really like.
German Military Cemetery Menen
The German military cemetery at Menen is the largest German war cemetery in Western Europe, commemorating no fewer than 47 900 fallen soldiers. During WWI Menen was occupied by German troops, where several German hospitals and cemeteries were constructed. This cemetery was located close to a wood, hence the name 'Meenen Wald'. Open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Belgian Military Cemetery Vleteren
French soldiers started this cemetery in the autumn of 1914. Only by June 1916, the Belgians took it over. After the war, the site was enlarged and the French soldiers were relocated. This cemetery became one of the nine Belgian military cemeteries in West-Flanders. A total of 1 207 soldiers found their last resting-place in the Belgian military cemetery in the village of Westvleteren. Open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Commonwealth Military Cemetery Lijssenthoek & Visitor Centre.
Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is the impressive witness of more than four years of war violence. From 1915 until 1920 the hamlet of Lijssenthoek became the venue for the biggest evacuation hospital in the Ypres Salient. Today the cemetery evokes daily reflections of the Great War. The visitor centre tells the story of this unique site.
Cimetière Militaire Commonwealth du Tyne Cot
Tyne Cot Cemetery is the largest military cemetery of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on the continent. This impressive cemetery has almost 12,000 tombstones. The impressive rear wall of the cemetery contains the names of 35,000 soldiers missing in action. On 12 July 2007 a brand new visitor infrastructure was opened. The new visitor centre offers a unique view over the former battlefields and contains much information on Tyne Cot Cemetery and the fallen of Passchendaele.
Cimetière militaire français Ossuaire français Kemmel
The mass grave at the foot of Kemmel Hill contains the remains of 5 294 French soldiers, of whom just 57 are identified. Their names can be seen on the central monument.Most of those men died during the battle for Kemmel Hill in April 1918. The panorama of the surroundings from this point is impressive. Open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Mine Crater at St.Eloi
The crater at St.Eloi is the result of the largest deep mine detonated during the war. The crater is flanked by an intact British bunker from 1917 and stands just 100 metres from another crater, the result of one of the six mines exploded on 27 March 1916 during the Attack of St.Eloi.

De Oostkantons -- verrassend groot
De Oostkantons zijn zo uniek, omdat ze in het hart van Europa liggen. In het noorden vloeien België, Nederland en Duitsland samen in een drielandenpunt. Aan de westkant leunt het Franstalige Wallonië tegen de regio aan. In het zuiden strekt ze zich uit tot Luxemburg, in het oosten tot de Duitse bondstaten Nordrhein-Westfalen en Rheinland-Pfalz. Het zijn deze ligging en de invloeden van de buren, die de Oostkantons een heel bijzondere identiteit gegeven hebben. Hier ontstaat een mooie mengeling van Belgische rust en Duitse betrouwbaarheid en een flinke dosis levenskunst.
Op een oppervlakte van nauwelijks 1.036 vierkante kilometer komen de Oostkantons zowel cultureel, taalkundig als culinair verrassend groots voor de dag. De diversiteit is er groot, wat taal betreft bijvoorbeeld. In en rond Malmedy wordt Frans gesproken. De rest van de Oostkantons spreekt Duits. De verschillen met de buurlanden vallen meteen op. Langs de Belgische kant van de grens bij Aken ontplooit zich een landschap dat -- vrij van verkavelingen en industriële landbouw -- al zijn charmes behield. Het lijkt wel een schilderij van een vergeten land, met kleine straatjes die alleen maar lijken te dienen om zich kronkelend naar het volgende prentenboekdorp, de volgende bekoorlijke stad te begeven. En ongetwijfeld bevindt zich op deze weg wel een restaurant waar de regionale keuken in ere gehouden wordt. Want ook op culinair vlak zijn de Oostkantons steeds weer verrassend.

Belevingsroute Oostende tijdens de groote Oorlog
Een gloednieuwe fietstocht in het kader van de herdenking van 100 jaar Groote Oorlog, brengt je langs deze en andere markante historische plaatsen.
Onderweg laten infoborden de bezoeker kennismaken met de historische achtergrond van Oostende tijdens de Groote Oorlog: het belang van de haven van Oostende en van de kustverdediging, de vluchtelingenstroom enz.
Al fietsend langs de WOI-sites van Oostende ontdek je toffe animaties en muziek. Starten doe je individueel vanuit Raversyde, waar je kortfilms te zien krijgt over vrede en er bovendien een bezoek kan gebracht worden aan de Atlantikwall.
Van daaruit vertrekken we richting het Fort Napoleon met onderweg gedichtlezingen, animaties en een boottocht. Hier stap je even af voor een optreden met Ierse traditionals, een mogelijkheid om je picknick op te eten en spiegelsoldaten. Verder in de tocht vinden we Klaroenblazers terug en ontdek je Oostende op een heel andere manier.
Afspraak dus op zaterdag 25 en zondag 26 april tussen 10u30 en 12u in Raversyde. Dit is meer dan fietsen, dit is beleven.
