La rue des Vignoles donne accès à une quinzaine d'impasses perpendiculaires, ouvertes pour la plupart à la fin du XIXe siècle afin de réaliser des logements ouvriers dans de petites maisons individuelles.

À l'origine, la zone de la rue des Vignoles est située à proximité du village de Charonne. En 1730, le plan de Roussel des faubourgs de Paris fait apparaître un chemin qui correspond plus ou moins à l'actuelle rue des Vignoles, près du lieu-dit Fontarabie, à mi-chemin entre la place du Trône (actuelle place de la Nation) et le château de Charonne (démoli depuis).

Au XIXe siècle siècle, la zone fait partie de la commune de Charonne. Dans la première moitié du siècle, elle est indiquée comme faiblement urbanisée sur les cadastres, qui nomment deux lieux-dits : les Hautes-Vignoles et les Basses-Vignoles. Le 3 juillet 1830, la commune de Charonne nomme la partie orientale (située actuellement entre la rue Michel-de-Bourges et la rue des Orteaux) chemin des Vignoles. Une rue des Basses-Vignoles existe dans la partie occidentale, débouchant sur Paris. En 1860, la commune de Charonne est absorbée lors de l'agrandissement de Paris ; l'urbanisation de la zone date plus ou moins de cette époque. Les voies de l'ancienne commune sont intégrées dans la voirie parisienne le 23 mai 1863.

La voie porte son nom actuel à partir du 10 novembre 1873 et ne s'étend alors qu'entre les rues des Orteaux et Michel-de-Bourges.

Le 4 novembre 1876, elle est étendue à l'ouest jusqu'à la rue de Buzenval, puis absorbe l'ancienne impasse de l'Industrie pour aboutir rue Planchat.

Le 2 juin 1892, la dernière partie est ouverte, qui la relie au boulevard de Charonne.

Les nombreuses impasses qui débouchent sur la rue sont ouvertes pour la plupart vers 1870, destinées à des logements ouvriers. Dans les années 1980, la plupart sont squattées ; le no 67 devient un grand squat emblématique et le carrefour de la lutte sur le logement de cette époque, ainsi que l'adresse de la première permanence du Comité des mal-logés.

France was having a country-wide Garden Weekend, so gardens held special events, and gardens normally not open welcomed visitors for three days.

Saint-Cloud is just over the Seine on a West side of Paris, and from times of the Monarchy has been important. Sèvres porcelain, movie studios, rich estates and a steep terrain give it unusual aspects and points of interest. Somewhat stodgy, quirky, wealthy, but also simply old and with aspects of decay, Saint-Cloud is now easier to reach thanks to a tramway, but really, it's never seemed to worry about being very accessible in modern times.

Ms. Stern was a painter and her home overlooking Paris was fairly recently classified as being of historical interest. On this clip, you can see how Paris really is in Le Bassin Parisien, a bowl if you will, making it a place of rather unhealthy air -- the Western and Southwestern heights were generally considered the desirable places to live, for good reasons (health and aesthetics).

You can see an RER train here, but you can also get here by taking a métro (MOLITOR is one possibility) to the Seine and a city bus from there, or you can also take a tramway from La Défense. Via automobile, you are likely to find traffic a headache.

I worked in Saint-Cloud for awhile in the '90s, and from Saint-Denis where I live, it was a long commute with many transfers. From Saint-Cloud, a royalty route allowed for travel to Versailles and other points without having to enter Paris. I have several clips up on the Internet of a good museum in Saint-Cloud. I always feel a bit unwelcome there, which I find interesting. So much is locked away behind sturdy gates and walls.
