Jokkmokk is a locality and the seat of Jokkmokk Municipality in Norrbotten County, province of Lapland, Sweden, with 2,786 inhabitants in 2010. The Sámi name of the place means River's Curve, due to the meandering river that runs through it. It is just north of the Arctic Circle. Jokkmokk was a transit center for Sami refugees from Norway during World War II, in addition to the center in Kjesäter. Jokkmokk Market has been taking place for more than 400 years.     The Sami people are a Finno-Ugric people inhabiting Sápmi, which today encompasses large parts of Norway and Sweden, northern parts of Finland, and the Murmansk Oblast of Russia. The Sami have historically been known in English as the Lapps or the Laplanders, which have a derogatory implication in Scandinavia, but not elsewhere. Sami ancestral lands are not well-defined. Their traditional languages are the Sami languages and are classified as a branch of the Uralic language family.
