From Ubon Ratchathani to Khong Chiam - Thailand 4K Travel Channel
The journey takes us along the Mun Rivers from Ubon Ratchathani direction the east to Khong Chiam. The distance is slightly more than 100 km and is the driving time for almost 2 hours. On the way, we pass an OTOP in Sai Mun. OTOP are shops that sell products, on which one has specialized in the region. The OTOP of the village Sai Mun are the traditional drums. The so-called tambols are mainly for the use in temples. They are available in all shapes and sizes.
Khon Chiam is a small place at the confluence of the Mekong and the Mun River. It is the starting point for two different national parks. The Kaeng Tana includes the confluence of the Mun River and the Mekong River.
The Pha Taem National Park is about 20 km further north. Here you should visit the Pha Taem cliff with its 4000 years old rock drawings.
A highlight in Khon Chiam is the beautiful white temple Wat Tham Khuha Sawan. The temple was built in the Ayutthaya period and belongs to the first Royal Temple. From the temple, we will watch the training for the next dragon boat race.

Die Fahrt führt uns entlang des Mun Rivers von Ubon Ratchathani Richtung Osten nach Khong Chiam. Die Entfernung beträgt etwas mehr als 100 km und die Fahrtzeit ist knapp 2 Stunden.
Auf dem Weg passieren wir in Sai Mun ein OTOP. OTOP sind Geschäfte in denen Produkte verkauft werden, auf die man sich in der Region spezialisiert hat. Im Dorf Sai Mun sind es traditionelle Trommeln. Die sogenannten Tambols werden speziell in Tempel verwendet. Hier gibt es sie in sämtlichen Formen und Größen.
Khon Chiam ist ein kleiner Ort am Zusammenfluss des Mekong und des Mun Rivers. Er ist Ausgangspunkt zu zwei unterschiedlichen Nationalparks. Der Kaeng Tana umfasst den Zusammenfluss des Mun Flusses und des Mekong.
Der Pha Taem Nationalpark liegt ca. 20 km weiter nördlich. Hier sollten sie die Pha Taem Klippen mit ihren 4000 Jahre alten Felszeichnungen besuchen.
In Khon Chiam gibt es einen sehenswerten weißen Tempel, Wat Tham Khuha Sawan. Der Tempel wurde in der Ayutthaya-Periode gebaut und gehört zum ersten Königlichen Tempeln. Vom Tempel aus beobachten wir das Training für die nächsten Drachenbootrennen.

Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand. Founded in 1296, it was capital of the independent Lanna Kingdom until 1558. Its Old City area still retains vestiges of walls and moats from its history as a cultural and religious center. It’s also home to hundreds of elaborate Buddhist temples, including 14th-century Wat Phra Singh and 15th-century Wat Chedi Luang, adorned with carved serpents.

Wat Phra That Phanom, Isan - Thailand 4K Travel Channel
Before we drive to Wat Phra That Phanom, we have a look at the banks of the Mekong in Phra Klang Thung. Near the Thai banks of the Mekong, you find again and again islands. Almost all belong to Laos. The reason for this is to be found in the past. Siam was the dominant country in this region. As of the middle of the 19th century onwards, the French developed their influence as a colonial power in Southeast Asia and conquered the eastern bank of the Mekong. They then forced Siam to recognize the Mekong as a border river. In return, the part of Laos to the east of the Mekong came to Siam. This part corresponds to Isan today. The islands in the Mekong remained with Laos.
We continue our way to the Wat Phra That Phanom. It is one of the most important Temple complexes in Isan. The Chedi allegedly houses the breastbone of Buddha and is said to have been erected 8 years after his death.
The outer covering of the That, as the quadrangular Chedis are called here, dates back to the ninth century. It received its present appearance in the Laotian style in 1690. At that time, the monk Phra Khru Luang Phonsamek increased the height to 47 m and gave it a tip of 16 kg of pure gold. In 1941 the That was renovated and once again increased to 57 m.
A thunderstorm strongly damaged the That in 1975 and it was renovated again in 1979. It is said to have been decorated with 110 kg of gold. In an adjoining building is a small museum with items that have survived the storm in 1975.
The ornate and approximately 2 m high perimeter wall with its magnificently ornamented main entrance, as well as a sedentary Buddha with a golden honor umbrella in front of the That, date from more recent times.
Lakes and trees adorn the surroundings of the temple. Outside the wall, you find souvenir booths everywhere.
Since 2017, Wat Phra That Phanom belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
A shrub became the home of many Lyssa zampa (Tropical Swallowtail Moth), also known as Laos Brown Butterfly.

Bevor wir zu Wat Phra das Phanom fahren, bleiben wir noch etwas in Phra Klang Thung am Ufer des Mekong. Nahe dem thailändischen Ufer sind immer wieder Inseln zu finden. Sie gehören aber fast alle zu Laos. Der Grund dafür ist in der Vergangenheit zu suchen.
Siam war das beherrschende Land in dieser Region. Ab der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bauten die Franzosen ihren Einfluss als Kolonialmacht in Südost-Asien immer stärker aus und eroberten das östliche Ufer des Mekong. Danach zwangen sie Siam zur Anerkennung des Mekong als Grenzfluss. Im Gegenzug kam der östlich des Mekong liegende Teil von Laos zu Siam. Dieser Teil entspricht heute dem Isan. Die Inseln im Mekong verblieben bei Laos.
Wir setzen unseren Weg fort zum Wat Phra That Phanom. Es ist eine der bedeutendsten Tempelanlagen im Isaan. Der Chedi beherbergt angeblich ein Schlüsselbein Buddhas und soll bereits 8 Jahre nach seinem Tod errichtet worden sein.
Die äußere Ummantelung des That, wie die viereckigen Chedis hier genannt werden stammt aus dem 9. Jahrhundert. Er erhielt sein heutiges Aussehen im laotischen Stil im Jahr 1690. Damals lies der Mönch Phra Khru Luang Phonsamek ihn auf 47 m erhöhen und gab ihm eine Spitze aus 16 kg reinem Gold. 1941 wurde der That renoviert und nochmal auf 57 m aufgestockt.
1975 wurde er durch Gewitter stark beschädigt und musste 1979 nochmals renoviert werden. Man sagt er sei damals mit 110 kg Gold verziert worden. In einem Nebengebäude hat man ein kleines Museum eingerichtet, mit Gegenständen, die das Unwetter 1975 überstanden haben.
Die reich verzierte und rund 2m hohe Umgrenzungsmauer mit ihrem prachtvoll verzierten Haupteingang, sowie ein sitzender Buddha mit einem goldenen Ehrenschirm vor dem That stammen aus neuerer Zeit.
Die Umgebung von Wat Phra That Phanom wurde mit Seen und Bäumen gestaltet. Außerhalb der Mauer haben sich überall Souvenirstände angesiedelt.
2017 wurde Wat Phra That Phanom in das UNESCO Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen.
Ein Strauch wurde zur Heimat vieler Lyssa zampa, der Tropischen Schwalbenschwanzmotte, auch als Laos Brown Butterfly bekannt.
